I was arguing with a couple of AI bros over a year ago about this happening in the future. They called me dumb, not understanding how AI works, it will only help us artists and designers, how amazing it will be if i have to do way less work and get paid just as much.... I told them it will only push us out, lower our salaries, take away opportunities and make future generations feel pointless about even trying to learn these skills. Companies will just get rid of us. I was a scarecrow, a crybaby, boo-hoo i'm scared for nothing.... ... I wish i was :(

I think it’s both. It’s like any new piece of technology. Yes, some people do lose their jobs, but new jobs come out of it. For example, Microsoft excel removed the jobs all the data entry people and spreadsheet management folks since they were no longer needed since it was digital. But it created jobs in IT for people that now needed to know how to fix those computers and fix any issues with that software. AI is the same, someone will need to know how to create it, update it, fix it, patch it, and more importantly, USE IT. I think now more than ever you’ll see that most fields will require a strong background in technology or AI to prevent you from losing your job. As the work becomes more sophisticated and complex, your skills will need to too. (I do agree about the lower wage stuff but that’s a whole separate conversation about corporate greed).

@@ShadowMakesSomeArt In his example, the data entry and spreadsheet management folks need to reskill. The market is under no obligation to reward and compensate workers for utilizing the same skill for their entire careers. Sometimes there are skills that are just not valuable because more valuable solutions are developed. In the 30 years following the mechanization and mass industrialization of the automobile in the 1920's horses saw a nearly 85% reduction in population. This didn't happen because they got lazy or because automobiles are evil and kill horses. It also doesn't make the families that can purchase an automobile that is less maintenance, cheaper, and requires less knowledge to use evil. What happened was that there was simply very little work that a horse could do that would pay for its housing and hay. That doesn't mean there's zero horses today! Police use them, they're really popular here in the US for performances, sports, and hobbies, etc. There definitely will still be SOME people doing old things, but it will be both incredibly competitive and feature reduced compensation (supply and demand). It just makes sense for people to reskill when their existing market isn't worth the effort anymore. FYI: I was a machine learning engineer for a few years and work for the military on some similar things now. The best explanation and video on youtube I recommend to people about the subject of automation is by CGP Grey. I believe it's called: "Humans Need Not Apply" and was made almost a decade ago. It inspired me to get into the field as a high schooler. It's evergreen and nearly prophetic.

fr People don't understand how large companies abuse the market economy system simply because of their monetary advantage. We quite literally cannot do anything about it - statistically their ideas even have more representation in laws (at least in my country) than the average person. AI will only benefit those who have the monetary ability to use it effectively - at least on the scale of business we live in now. Companies seek more money - they do not have moral quandary beyond what they can get away with.

Creative work is getting slammed hard. The problem with AI is that it chokes upon itself, it needs new fresh content to keep up, and a big risk with AI is consuming its own content and learning from it, which is sort of like 'inbreeding' the model and causes lower quality output. That, as as opposed to being hired to the company and having them own the rights to his stuff. So that they couldn't bone him out of his work... This is likely why Minecraft has different music producers, now. He was asked to make more music for the game, but Microsoft probably refused to participate in the previous agreement and C418 wouldn't want to make music under a new agreement which didn't offer the same protections to his work (I use "possibly"/"probably" because I recall hearing this, but I haven't looked into it recently so I'm unsure of the exactness of the facts). Hey man, I'm a voice actor who's already seeing my potential squandered thanks to AI. At a Semi Pro or Amateur level of voice acting, people don't want to pay and would rather use AI (since it's mostly free) It's scary that AI can now pause, take breathes and all the things a human can do. The only benefit to my line of voice acting is my potential of getting into Anime or TV, since the industry is also looking to go to AI. It's a scary time, cutting both creative and fun jobs completely from us. Our lives are going to be ruined, and this will ruin our motivation It's a huge Shame!

Here's advice to you from someone who doesn't at all mind AI implementation in art, and will use it when I get my creative projects off the ground. Yes, moving forward you will probably never ever make a living wage doing voice work. That's just how it is. But there is still lots of artistic value in creating charming voices no one has heard before. Instead of doing "generic deepman" or anime softboy which any voice actor can do with enough practice, you could try to find Saturday Morning cartoony unique voices like Grey Delisle, Richard Horvitz, Cree Summer and so on. My opinion, as a cartoonist with projects I'm working on, I believe the ideal moving forward will be you hire a voice actor for one season and they're doing their human real voice, then from there once the performance style is et in stone, you use the Ai. So yeah, give that a thought. And no, I don't remotely care about your hurt feelings and I owe you nothing. My hostility now is because I imagine responses to my good faith, helpful advice will be shit on for me daring to consider working with useful time saving tools we all know AAA studios will abuse to turn a profit. Save your seething for your pillow, there is still value in hiring human artists for character design and other things, but human art isnt inherently better. There's nothing a human can make that an Ai won't be able to eventually replicate. Art is just an end product. Sometimes the behind the scenes is novel, and as a filmmaker I do feel a loyalty to that process. But that doesnt make the end product lesser. Ai will be responsible for narratives that move mountains with how fantastic the storytelling will be, and I alreasy like micro productions like Planet Mountain Doo and those SCP tiktoks.

@NeverlandsPhantom Using their voice for AI beyond one season, can get you in a lot of legal trouble without consent or an agreement for royalty. So, ensure to do a lot of research and be sensible. If you don't care about the actor, we for certain don't care about your project. So please be mindful of that fact and treat it as it is (a business) Also your analogy makes no sense, that's like saying any photographer can take a photo, any editor can edit, any animator can animate. Everyone is different and unique. Also, can you relax on being so condescending? You being okay with AI, is yet another reason your job will also be taken in the future.

Obvs I'm not sure how the law is where you are at but many if not most workers rights lawyers, in the US, work on contingency, meaning they don't charge up front. This might be very similar where you are at. If you signed a bunch of stuff or had some exit interview upon being let go its unlikely you could get anything out of it but there is a hgh chance it won't cost you anything to consult a lawyer. As a freelance illustrator myself, I really hope this doesn't discourage people from chasing jobs in creative industries. There are still companies that only work with actual artists and don't work with AI partially because of the copyright legislation. It's all about finding your niche and creating a name for yourself, people will come because they want to work with you specifically. That being said I know it's really scary. It's feast or famine as a freelancer and some people don't have the luxury to deal with that because they have a family to support or a mortgage.
