Jerry can lay down the meanest riffs as good or as close to Tony Iommi or play a solo with the most feel like David Gilmour can not to mention he's an incredible songwriter as evidenced in AIC and his solo albums. He has that rare ability of being a good guitarist and composer but he never overdoes the riffs or solos. They're always tasteful - its what the song needs.

This song is just so complex. It's very minimalistic with the music and the empty space that is filled by the power, range, and melody of Layne's voice. Layne could sing this in a foreign language and you'd still know exactly what this song was about. It's easy to use hyperbole when not appropriate ... but in this case, it's an understatement to say that this song at this concert is just brilliant and beautiful. This is a song that only a handful of singers could actually sing.

Agreed. But the quality that gets me is how explosive his voice is. It's like the gates to another, faster dimension bursts open and a prolonged energy spills out. Not spills, it's like a constant attack of raw energy released at such force that it obliterates everything. I can't explain it properly. It's the sudden-ness of his vocal attack that is amazing to me. And it just doesn't stop until he says it stops.

Layne seemed so healthy here, in his prime. He was such a good looking boy. And voice was so perfectly pure. No drugs yet. It's hard to believe that for this gig Layne was only 5 years younger than at MTV Unplugged... In 1996, only 5 years after that gig, Layne seemed 20 years older, and his voice, even though still beautiful, lost its purity. Layne died 11 years later, but his descent was so long and painful...

@@diamondsareforever7796 Layne started heroin in 1991. So he was still out of it at the time of this gig. Even though his performance at the MTV Unplugged show in 1996 was mindblowing, his voice had lost most of its power. That's why songs like Love Hate Love or Man in The Box were not part of the setlist for MTV Unplugged : he would not have been able to scream as perfectly as he used to do few years before. And you can notice that the tripod album (1995) doesn't contain any song where Layne screams...
@diamondsareforever77962 жыл бұрын
Well yeah over time he lost his teeth. But still could belt out some notes that most herion/crack addicts couldn't, still in 1996 etc etc. He injected so his chest was not full of crap, trust me he wouldn't even be able to talk with out struggling to breathe if he were smoking one if not both. Just I do not think anyone has the right to say he was or wasn't on drugs here or there? We really do not know that answer. And you can't believe everything you read. But yes he suffered a long old time. He had money on tap, many others do not. Which in itself is worse or some would say better? He didn't have to wake up go and graft then hunt down a dealer whicb is even more tiring etc etc. Hence why it didn't take to long for his down fall.

Did you know that they once worked together in a studio and recorded a song for Alice In Chains called Right Turn, on that same track Cornell demonstrates his vocal ability and versatility that surpasses Layne's talent (which was no small feat either.) It's as if Layne is like a blacksmith's shop, and Cornell is a Rolls-Royce, both are good, but one really is the best overall.
@vitorkaique578210 ай бұрын
Chris Cornell's range is C#2-G6, Layne Staley's range is G1-D7, he did those notes live too, he hit D7 when he killed himself, Chris Cornell's range is literally contained in Layne's range. However, Cornell only reaches 4 octaves in one song: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZmVYaRped1riKs&pp=ygUQYmV5b25kIHRoZSB3ZWxsIA%3D%3D Singing professionals have said that Cornell never used his full chest and head singing strength, because if he did, he could perhaps hit more notes, being a baritone he had a lot of technique to go up and down the pitch, without sounding like a little girl. Besides, on Soundgarden's B-side records, Cornell had VOLUME, EXTENSION, DEPTH AND REACH so much after so many years he admits he couldn't reach all the octaves, due to aging and lifestyle, but he was the GREATEST singer of the 90s. Layne might be close, Cornell was IMBATIBLE.

Layney and Chris Cornell were the greatest voices in rock in the 90s and one of the greatest voices in music in general. They are gods of music, talent, mastery, range and vocal techniques of the highest levels.

This whole concert is in my opinion the best aic concert, heck even the best concert in music. Layne is completely in the zone, hits every note, immense passion. He almost literaly embodies his music like he is possesed
