Aikido the way that doesn't work episode #3 Ushiro waza is the highlighted technique for this episode. Lenny sly sensei of the #roguewarriors training compound does it again by exposing traditional aikido with what doesn't work. Here Sly sensei shows us the ineffective way on how ushiro waza attacks just don't work in the real world. He also talks about and demonstrates that the real purpose of ushiro waza is based on a failed kosa dori application. Sly sensei completely debunks the misconceptions of another traditional aikido technique in full detail and much more.

Nice video Lenny ! We have to see wrist Ushiro grabs as a historical heritage from Samaurai Age. As almost all wrist grabs, the point is to prevent the Samuraï to use his weapons and the idea is the same with an Ushiro wrist grab attack that is supposed to be a surprise attack. And here it’s point and you made the point : it doesn’t make sense at all to start an Ushiro attack starting by the front. I don’t understand why in Aikido people do such shits. A guy who comes in front will stay in front to hurt you as quick as possible, he will not turn around you to grab the wrists by behind. A guy who wants to surprise you will come from behind and, in our modern time, choke you, block your arms, an so on. A good training of Ushiro is important since it offers the opportunity to use the five senses, to feel the opponent attack and intuit the position of his body without actually being able to see it directly. Ushiro attack (when it’s done correctly, not like in Aikido) is an added value in fighting training.

In Daito-Ryu, the technical ancestor of aikido, the real attacks come from behind and not from the front! In aikido, side attacks never change axis so it’s easy to dodge. Even in slow motion if you make a yokomen (or Ouramen) if you change the axis at the last moment you touch all the aikidokas. It is the same for shomen with swords or aikidoka attack shomen while advancing at the same time. A kendoka would touch them every time (same for tsukis). I am 3rd dan of aikido that I gave up for a more logical aiki (jutsu) practice, that makes me today 47 years of practice aiki and kendo. I watch your videos with great interest. Congratulations and congratulations to you and your passionate research. Excuse my English (done by Reverso) because I am French and unfortunately do not speak English.

In tomiki aikido we have 5 koryu kata. Or traditional aikido techniques they number around 150 techniques most schools don't understand them and generally fuck them up like some bullshit dance . The only instructor I knew of that understood they were all exercises and not combat . Yet very important for our randori skills was Neil Saunders sensei. 4th Dan tomiki 5th Dan yoshinkan. . Randori in tomiki is very similar to judo . Yet the contact is made through handblade not gi. Everyone looks down on tomiki system . Yet it has really helped me see what doesn't work and what does . We don't only train with 100% resistance we learn effective counters. Throw in dirty boxing ,jujitsu and some low kicks you have a wonderful aikido. . Yes it's aikido because aikido is a principal of movement. Love the videos

I believe the reason for the odd grab defenses comes from knife attacks. If you watch videos of stabbings from the rear (I found 10), often (60%) the attacker grabs a wrist, arm, or shoulder to hang onto while they attack, 30% neck or higher (hair). Nine out of 10 of the rear stabbings involved a grab or "choke" . A third of the rear attacks started in the front, so people will chase you around while grabbing and stabbing. About 75% of the frontal minetsuki (I found 8) also included a grab with non stabbing hand. For whatever reason, when people go ham on somebody with a knife, they usually grab them with the other hand.

Hey Lenny, Again our two branches seem to be very close, with some small differences. The Ushiro techniques were taught to me as failed techniques as well. The way we drill it is with the idea that every one of those, are failed Nage Waza. Take, for example, that crappy choke that you rightfully explained is a poor choke. Your right, it is a horrible choke. You are performing a Mune Tsuki Koshinage. You have caught his wrist, and got him up on your back. Suddenly, he reaches over your shoulder and grabs on to your gi. If hes really good, he wraps his leg around the front of your leg, stopping the throw. Now what position is he in? The exact “stupid choke” we are talking about. If you watch some of the Tomiki boys doing their Randori, or watch enough judo matches, you will see all the times that people naturally adapt the Ushiro positions when a technique fails. Its great to see another school applying this knowledge other than my own :) great video, I would love to see your Aikikai Kokyonage that doesn't work video! Kokyonage in the Aikikai branch is ridiculous, and even O sensei hated it, he just didn't forbid people from using it as a practice drill for Ukemi.

The Aiki-bunny version seems to be a super safe way to get the muscle memorie for technique down, but when people take that as reality, stupid unrealistic attack scenarios seem to be the result. Its because too many people are martial arts parrots who can't think for themselves. I'm thankful to have been introduced to Aikido by someone as thorough as Lenny. Another good defense against headlocks is a solid suplex. 👌

Great exploration. I agree that ushiro wasa is taught as you describe, very stylised. The chasing of wrists is not explained. This only makes sense to me if you factor in weapons. That you, as the attacker, want to/have to neutralise the ability to pull a weapon. This is not specific for ushiro wasa but a a common feature in most aikido training. Other ideas anyone? For the logic/usability in attacking the wrist?

I’m a Nidan and your right . There is an exception if you see the traditional techniques as a response if an attacker is after your weapon . They won’t let go of your wrist if your holding a knife . I’ve seen a lot of play aikido Very sad .

I think you're right about hanging onto the weapon arm, tunnel vision sets in and the wrist hold becomes a death grip. If you watch videos of stabbings from the rear (I found 10), often (60%) the attacker grabs a wrist, arm, or shoulder to hang onto while they attack. About 75% of the frontal minetsuki (I found 8) also included a grab with non stabbing hand. Your missing the historical aspects of the attack. The major aspect of this attack is to hold nage so he can be arrested, not to beat nage unconscious. These forms of attack take place for multiple people are attacking at once. The run around is because nage has a weapon in the hand, so uke runs around so as not to be cut and tries to complete the restraint. My shihan doesn't like the run around as well but he still teaches it.

I don't claim to have your many years of training experience. However - the way I'm used to think of oshiro attack is not to mimic a realistic attack, but to learn how to become a center relative to the attacker (along with many other training techniques). I doubt that this attack was ever meant to represent a 'real attack'. Also - the way I was taught is actually when the attacker comes to grab your hand - if you're not moving with him (means backwards relative to your position) when he comes you already fucked up the attack because you're in a 'too late position' which he can punch your face (as you demonstrated). Regardless - thank you very much for all your videos, I really like how you put everything in doubt to make people think and contribute from your years of training experience & knowledge.

But he never shows Tradicional aikido, i mean, 'Iwama style', like Morihiro Saito sensei taught, because in aikido iwama you don't dance and let alone you don't need uke cooperation just need good atemi waza

In the last video you discussed katadori ikkyo and mentioned that the way it's been done by senses including Kevin Choate shihan could never work. Let me start by saying that ALL of my commentary towards you has been respectful, still is, and except for encouraging you to "catch flies with honey" I've mostly agreed with you! I’ve even applied suriage as taught by you and Calderon-sensei online to shomentsuki attacks in a dojo within the past year when other stuff didn’t work, and watched uke fly! I'll even add to what you said about katadori ikkyo by offering O-Sensei's OWN MANUAL as evidence--in pictures he drives right toward hand on the shoulder that's being grabbed! So I hope that you will believe me when I tell you that I once attacked Kevin Choate-sensei katadori, resisted his ikkyo, and almost went flying to the ground! From memory he gently went around my strength with a gentler wrap around my arm with his hands, maybe softened his legs a bit, and the next thing I knew he’d almost driven my forehead into the mat! I remember being grateful later that I hadn’t resisted him while he was demonstrating technique in front of everybody or he probably WOULD have put me through the floor! As I’ve said already I admire the bujutsu style of your technique and the gist of what you’ve said in the past (not that you care, but I do!). I’ve wondered why so many dojos don’t teach Koshinage and Jujinage (how can you have a martial art without a hip throw?), why some skip Iriminage and Kokyunage in basics classes, why so many instructors never EVER grab-attack strongly when it’s what O-Sensei (according to Saito and Saotome shihandai) always insisted on, etc. I think that your frustration has paralleled my curiosity and many who are senior to me have also had those thoughts from time to time. HOWEVER, now I have to wonder: Are you saying Aiki (or what some call Musubi or Kokyu) is bull too? Are you saying that what George Ledyard provides in this video as a rudimentary example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/sIeVf4R8o8ynaac Or what Dan Harden does here in a more advanced example: kzbin.info/www/bejne/d5DZeqKlg82VeNU Or what Hiroshi Ikeda-shihan is probably doing here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/nZvXf5-OYraMntk …is all garbage? Which ones are and which ones aren’t? Because even implying that Kevin got on the mat and did ANY play acting with ANY technique, is kind of bewildering to me. But with an attack and technique that I’ve felt work personally from the man to the point that it made me recommit to my training for a time… Well, I am very interested in your response! Kevin studied under Saotome, who studied under Yamaguchi and O-Sensei. Reynosa-sensei studied under several including Seagal, who studied under MANY shihandai including Koichi Tohei, who studied under O-Sensei. Do you believe in ki-extension like Seagal does? Do you believe that he really could not not lift Koichi Tohei, or do you suspect that to be fake too? God’s honest truth: Until recently, it never occurred to me to even ask…

I like what you say a lot. I would like to make suggestion if you are open to it? Get into George Dillman's pressure fighting on Tuite Jitsu and throw it into Aikido. It makes a lot of the techniques that don't work work. I don't care if you don't believe in the knockouts, or the energy knockouts that we do, but the Tuite portion of the art is specifically made for grappling and it puts a lot of pain into the nervous system, so it could be adapted into almost every Aikido technique. I was constantly using it in Aikido until I started getting in trouble for it. Whenever I used it I had people screaming in pain, but I had to stop because I started getting in trouble for it. www.dillman.com

There's no bull shit about it. I've been doing it for 25 years. I've been knocked out before on stomach 9 and stomach 10. I've also knockout people on Stomach 9. It works by using the neurological system which is the bodies electrical system. It works by shutting down the bodies electricity to certain parts of the body and sending back the signal as pain to the central nervous system. You don't need to do knockouts which is a combination of 3 points. For grappling I only need one or two points to create enough pain in the nervous system to gain the control I want.

Ian Moody to be clear. I'm not saying Tissier is shite. I think that Tissier's Aikido is excellent. I'm just pointing out that he has said that he does not believe that many Aikido techniques are "sufficient" as a means for self-defense. That doesn't mean he is shite when he demonstrates traditional aikido movements. And yes, his ukes are highly trained in ukemi, and yes they are not resisting to save their bodies, and yes the traditional aspects of Aikido training do not always lend themselves to learning practical modern street defense, but that does not mean it's useless or shite. It just means that some of the training methods as a means for street defense is not a complete system or is not a perfect application. A joint lock is a joint lock. It works. The problem as Lenny points out is that the ushirotekubitori as an attack us very unrealistic. He's also pointing out that many of the movements for getting to a joint lock need to be more direct. I think that it is great what Lenny Sly is doing, but he is attempting to do it within the framework of Aikido technique. He's even pointing out that there is nothing wrong with traditional aikido unless your training goals are to just learn a complete physical means of self defense. These videos are great Lenny. Keep them coming.

Thank you for the replies. I have actually been to tissiers seminar and some of his students. And no, they dont work. One of his student michel erb addmitted in an interview that their aikido doesnt work. It is annoying when many teachers present aikido as martial arts but later say that it does not work. Therefore... please do show these esoteric gurus that aikido does work.

Ok. I’ll be the one to 50%disagree. You’re purposely stuffing your own techniques, but you are getting popular. Congrats. When he’s coming hard at your urging, you resist his motion which is not aiki waza

Even Steven Seagal got choked out in front of Kevin heart by a judo guy. Aikido is so weak for real world attacks/combative. Kenpo, Kajukenbo, Sanuces Run jujitsu along with hung gar, silat & aspects of wing Chung are most effective for the streets. We laugh at aikido along with the kwon do. Bullshit arts for the kids & women. Urban Jujitsu is what I personally teach. A fusion of American Kenpo & Sho Bushido Ryu jujitsu. I combined to 2 Arts to create my own for these mean streets of Philly. Tried & tested in the real world. Very effective. My motto to my students for the past 17years has always been : quick as possible, hard as possible. Yes, we trying to hurt'em. They touch us, they must feel pain. Oooos

This is true to a point. AIKIDO, true aikido is irimi attemi. enter and destroy. everything else is what to do if something fails. as demonstrated. I get a little fed up with people with basic knowledge rubbishing another martial art. IT IS NOT BUSHIDO. (WAY OF THE WARRIOR) we study aikido not for short term gain but a long term understanding. So you created your own martial art. Good for you and as grand master I hope you pass on your 17 years of teaching. There are some people who have over double your time. myself included. so. show a little respect. After all we are all martial artists.

NAIM SALAHUDDIN and also steven is a judo black belt but the other one was the better one. If someone practises a martial art and got his ass whooped it doesn't mean that this martial art sucks and is useless everybody does that
