Korean here. I think the western way of eating has many non-Koreans thinking that banchan (bahn chahn) is free appetizers because they are set out way before the main comes out. And Korean restaurants in the US have leaned into it to some degree. Banchan traditionally is actually a collective of side dishes we eat WITH the main meal to enhance or even change the flavor profile of each bite. Yes, we have been known to munch on them before the main comes but we usually reserve banchan to eat with the main meal or even just with the rice. There are thousands of different kinds of banchan with some being specific to a region but the ones you see at the restaurants and Korean markets are the most used or well loved.

I lived in South Korea for 3 years. Not an expert but I know a few things. Would say this is closer to Korean fried chicken than Korean BBQ. Also your pronounciation of banchan was solid lol. Great video!
