Rather than respond to multiple comments, I'll try and answer with one here. I will post in community tab as well. I truly hate getting too technical on this channel because there are so many non-pilots who watch, so please bare with me. For those who question my decision to operate the prop in climb setting, here's what you need to understand: 1. Operating the Rotax 915 engine on lower RPMs actually puts a lot of strain on the gearbox if used for prolonged periods. If you ever fly behind one, just try reducing power below 1900 RPM while on the ground and you'll see what I mean. 2. Rotax are built to run at High RPMs but the operation is quite similar to your conventional engine. A Lycoming io360 for example will get you max power at 2700 RPM, but in cruise you would ride it at 2200-2400. Similar calculations here. Max on the Rotax 915 is 5800 RPM, Climb is 5400-5500 RPM and Cruise is 5000 RPM or less. 3. The cruise setting on the Airmaster will ride on lower RPMs (5000 or less) which also means you add more power (manifold) to get to desired speed. More power = more fuel burn. When you leave the prop in climb setting at 400-500 more RPM, you can ease up on the manifold pressure, and that ultimately gives you good power : rpm: fuel ratio. 4. 5450 RPM continuous is sweet spot for the Rotax 915. 5. For those who genuinely had a question about this, your feedback is greatly appreciated! 6. For the Chair pilots who always think they know best, your opinion is also greatly appreciated for the yt algorithm. But please refrain from trying to teach another pilot how to operate their own aircraft especially when you've personally never operated that same aircraft yourself.

Like I said in my previous post... we subscribed and watch your in support of what you’re doing, the possible life you may affect and the potential income you may earn. I agree with you regarding staying away from technical information. Many of the KZbin aviation channels rarely discussed technical information. Also, unbeknownst to you, there are viewers that are Engineers/Technicians, working and teaching in the field for over 40 years (Hint). So in reality, you’re trying to explain things that we have been involved with for many years, designing, implementing and teaching. I’m not here to challenge you or embarrass you, but there’re somethings, basic concepts, that you should review. Like Horsepower, Torque, Peak Torque, Manifold Pressure and the principal operation of a Turbocharger. Manifold pressure is not power. It’s an ingredient of power, but also an ingredient of torque. It’s the measured pressure from the turbocharger with the waste-gate closed. Anyway, I like what you’re doing. Keep going, but I would suggest staying away from technical information. It’s hard for guys in this area of expertise to listen to technical information that may not be accurate. And just so you know, the Engineers that invented turbochargers, Superchargers and the Internal Combustion Engines were not pilots.

Mike, I think you need to run your numbers. If you are getting better fuel ECONOMY at climb pitch, there is a problem. Could be bad programming from the manufacturer, or an error in installed, etc. It sounds like you might be over-emphasizing fuel flow and not calculating it against your airspeed. Use your airspeed, divided gph to calculate the fuel economy. Example = 120 knots at 10gph is 12 nautical miles per gallon but 130 knots at 10.5 gph is 12.4 nmpg and therefore more efficient.

I'd like to see a video showing prop rpm, manifold pressure and fuel flow as you go through all 3 prop setting. I would think that the manufacturer of the prop might have a good reason for 3 different settings since they have more long-term research. Also in some earlier videos it seemed that you struggled to find airports at night and on the first visit. Why didn't you use those nice avionics you purchased to lead you there and set you up for your approach. Keep up the great content 👏.

Very good video I congratulate you you come across as a very up to date pilot/tech in as far as the lastest technological updates, I will be honest with you in that I dont know if avaiation is even the direction I would like to go in, I started looking into it and practicing it after my Dad passed away and the Postal Service started downsizing, closing facilities, offering early retirment and eliminating those very positions when the employee had retired, so I did that and kept myself entertained got my licensing ect and was ready in the event a forced closing of the Postal Service due to privetizing taking place...my grk freind at the time whom was a window clerk....got her Nursing license/ degree after I also encouraged her....Long story short....I been there 32 years now....3 years short of early retirment age and I never found the need to work for the Postal Service as a Pilot....That was my original intention / plan though....I have no idea where it may lead now....I honestly thought of getting behind the yoke again after I retired to keep me going but I can't honestly say....I would like to make an income from it....you need several millions to start up your own FBO or Chartering service although with the lull in avaiation and everyone looking for afforable alternatives....it may just be the right time....I worked at Teterboro airport in New Jersey for an aircharter for awhile while I was working at the Postal Service......It was interesting and I enjoyed it alot....I was earning more then I earned in the Postal service after 18 years in my 1st paycheck...well that was then...I took a transfer to Puerto Rico where airports are farther away and fewer inbetween and now some 32 years later earn just as much as I was earning as an A&P and Electronic Tech back then....Why am I telling you all this? Because you know or may know what it is to struggel for something.....Yes I could own one....The question is would I even want to now? I have a 26 foot Mcyatch sitting in my yard just sitting there for whenever I feel like using it....walk in kitchen, living room convertable to an additional bedroom, bathroom with a shower, another bedroom, microwave, fridge, stove ect....I think you get my point....my truck needs repair to tow that 6 ton Beast but when I do I enjoy it....but I dont do it often sometimes several years pass and it sits in my yard and all I do it maintain it run a garden hose to it and run it in my own yard without the hassels of a hangers, tie down fees, take off and landing fees, the ups and downs of avaiation fuel, customs inspections etc....you get my point?....to own an aircraft your income needs to exceed your output...and the way the industry is geared....its as unrealistic as the Jetsons and flying cars in an unregulated airsystem run by human controlers unless you happen to live by a body of water and have a Land and Sea rating as I have.... then maybe you can offset your losses...maybe.... if your not rated to carry passengers......Im gonna keep watching you you are interesting and intelligent person I am hoping to learn something from you. Isn't there three kinds? Fixed pitch, constant speed, and in flight variable pitch? I'm not up on it yet so help me out. The constant speed - its a hydraulic governor so does that mean if you leave the prop control and throttle set during climb and you level out and start decent that the prop pitch will increase by itself to maintain rpm? And then what happens to vacuum? Does it stay constant cos you have same throttle position and same rpm? Inflight variable pitch- do the settings in the cabin align to a setpoint of rpm or is it just open loop pitch control?

I find it interesting that the kind of engine and drivetrain automation we've taken for granted in cars for decades is still a relatively new thing in GA aircraft. Even a brand new G36 Bonanza has manually-controlled propeller pitch. I'm sure it's for reasons of reliability. After all, if your ECU fails in your car, it's a lot less potentially catastrophic than if it fails in your airplane.

I mostly thought that private "fly for the enjoyment of it" type pilots didn't mind actually manipulating the engine prop and controls, being the human autopilot so to speak. Hi Mike. Not much into "Infomercials" - i.e. your electric prop. In my mind, I keep going back to your $50,000 Avionics panel, and the prop which, as I recall, was around $7,000.00 I know you want to use your Sling for business, etc., but for probably 99% of your followers, this is not what they are looking for. They just WANT TO FLY! The panel and prop alone, would be WAY more money your followers would need to buy and build (they themselves build) an Experimental Amateur Built airplane. HUGE number of kits out there for that $57,000.00 dollars. For your +$300,000 in your Sling, your followers could build (or buy GA used) up to 4 EAB's! The almost "fully automatic" operation of your Sling, IMHO, takes away the beauty and joy of actually "flying" the plane, not just manipulating the controls. In the real aviation world, your aviator followers need to be able to fully, manually, fly a plane - hopefully their EAB's. Setting switch positions and lever positions, then sitting back and letting the airplane fly itself, doesn't seem to fill the bill. Where am I wrong.?

I am "overboard" in my comments because I've seen a lot of this unfold around me, for over 30+ years in the Amateur building community. Mike's followers LOVE him and HIS little Sling - and that's a good thing. Actually, my heart breaks for those thousands who follow him and most, a great percentage, will never see the day they finish and fly their own airplane. Why? Because it costs a ton of MONEY - Mike has access to money, we "little people," and I'm including myself, do not. Mike has invested $300,000.00 plus in a "run of the mill, airplane. Not only that, to keep that airplane flying will cost a TON of money. We, little people, cannot even conceive being associated with "money numbers" that high - for a little airplane. I'll just say this: If a potential builder is really interested, he/she must consider all of the ancillary costs associated with having a "little plane." I won't enumerate them - there are many. I flew General Aviation planes -rented - never owned. VERY expensive. The "home built" planes are expensive, also, but not as much. So, I meant no harm - I just know what it takes to fulfill that dream and don't want to see anyone mislead about that. As an "old person," I no longer fly. Those who have the money will buy the kit if they are so inclined. Those who don't will either buy a used aircraft or rent. Those who don't have money at all will just live vicariously through the videos. It doesn't take a genius to realize that's how things will play out. I certainly don't need you to come in video after video commenting and essentially saying the same obvious things (infomercial-expensive-no one can afford it-yadayadayada). What I don't understand, however, is why you keep coming back to rain on the guy's parade, when you are clearly NOT his intended audience? Do you also hijack the comment section of other builders' YT channels (plenty of Vans being built out there), or is it just this channel? Market segmentation exists because consumers have different wants and needs. Not sure why you are so insistent in believing that all consumers are like you. Regardless of whether you agree with him or not (no, I don't always agree what what he posts), the guy has built up an audience for his channel with the videos that he created promoting and espousing his own viewpoints, "infomercial" and all. Right now, you just seem like someone who's riding on his achievements and "borrowing" his audience to gain some exposure for yourself and your own views. If you have an opinion you really want to put out, maybe you can work on your own channel, create some videos, and try to build up your own following, instead of just sniping at someone from the comforts of your lay-z-boy.
