They can repeat it too much or linger too long on the joke or just explicitly explain the joke. Comedians can also take it personally if someone doesn’t find a joke personally. And far far too many people will take it personally if another person doesn’t find something funny. It becomes an “humor is objective and you just have a bad sense of humor” and “okay. Lets move on.” That’s not getting into the dreaded laugh track.

The cleverest joke in the entire movie went overlooked by many: at the very beginning, Striker (Robert Hays) drives to the airport in his cab, and a man gets in. Striker then tells his fare that he'll be right back, starts the clock, and runs off after Elaine (Julie Hagerty). Of course, then he boards the plane and the entire movie happens. After the credits, we cut back to the man, still waiting in the taxi, looking at his watch and going, "I'll give him another minute," while the clock has run up the fare into the millions...

Airplane is one of those films that won't ever get old. It wasn't afraid to poke fun at everyone but at the same time did it in a clever way and not just for the sake of making controversial jokes. My favorite segment was where the main characters have just accepted the absurdity of the situation and proceed to play jazz in the cockpit now that was truly hillarious.

I remember seeing this in the theater and thinking about how all of the actors I had been used to seeing in serious roles over the years were suddenly in a movie that was a MAD Magazine come to life. That, I think, was the biggest thing that made this movie so much of a hit with the public. It was not a big success at the box office [in fact, it was a major loss for the studio], but over the years it has gained success because of it's cult status, and continuing influence on popular culture, extending into the 21st Century all the way up to 2023.
