Best way to avoid this would’ve been to just not go on this trip in the first place. Think about it. 12,000 feet down, so deep that not even a single ray of light can pierce the waters. Bioluminescence and artificial light is all you have. The pressure is so strong that it would INSTANTLY pulverize your bones (Basically means they’ll be absolutely crushed and folded like a can). And all of these risks just to see the titanic in person.

I tried to do commercial diving school. When I dove using the old Mark V suit, I was TERRIFIED when I said: “button me up.” In retrospect, even more frightening was realizing why an instructor was “pulled aside & spoken to” on a different day: We were instructed to put on the entire Mark V suit (with helm & boots, complete) & also the Yokohama (the Japanese equivalent), and strut up and down the pier-not plugged into an air source. If one of us had fallen in, omfg. I did one-third of the training. I never got comfortable diving any hat not set to “free flow.” I can imagining doing my job responsibly on a dependable Navy submarine, but the setup those Titanic viewers got into: my autonomic nervous system is giving me measurable “fear chemicals” like cortisol, and I’m not even near an ocean right now. It’s just my imagination. The salesman who set that up and chose to cut corners…that is deeply, morally, wrong. The Norwegians, Brits, and Americans-maybe Russians, too-with oil-rig experience and military experience with submersibles: experts exist… but those tourists didn’t get what extant experts would’ve insisted upon…
