Op didn't force the wife to wear dead wife's perfume, he tricked her into doing it by presenting it as a gift. It was highly wrong of him to do so and shows he isn't over his dead wife at all. I'm all for grieving and coping however you may, that doesn't include harming someone else. And you better believe he harmed his current wife by doing this. He could have made a shrine for her, or a memorial, placed a picture somewhere, sprayed on perfume occasionally to remember her. Now his living wife has to deal with the thoughts that she's just a replacement wife and if he sees her at all or just someone he can project onto. Someone who will never quite be his "real" wife.

OP literally lying to himself to make himself feel better. Telling his family not to tell his wife he was giving her the perfume his late wife wore means it isn’t “it should be ok, it’s not wrong” because going behind his wife’s back isn’t right and OP knows it.

My mother used to use a particular type of scented soap that I wasn’t very fond of when she was alive. (She wasn’t too much into a signature perfume as she liked to borrow mine and I’ve always changed mine fairly often). However, when hen she passed, I saved a bar of the soap and every so often, I take a sniff for the memories. Scent is tied more to emotions/memories than we are consciously aware of. OP in the perfume story was definitely the AH. A loss is traumatic and using the scent as a therapy tool is acceptable. However, coercing a new spouse (even if only by omission) into becoming a living therapy tool is unethical to the spouse and likely is not helping OP’s wounded heart heal the way he thinks it is. Poor OP’s wife must be doubting so much now. Every gift of jewelry, every compliment on a new dress, every small romantic outing or gesture, she might be questioning it if they were all genuinely meant for her, or if he was trying to relive more moments with his deceased wife. OP owes his wife a sincere apology and he owes himself some counseling or therapy to finally put his grief behind him.

Story 3: Absolutely the Ahole. As a widow who recently remarried my current husband and I regularly discuss both of our boundaries the things I do to honor my late husband. One of the key parts of getting remarried and being able to remember someone you lost in a healthy way is being able to openly talk about it and give your partner agency. Sometimes my husband is ok with participating (going places that I still enjoy, he wears some Renaissance festival garb that belonged to my late husband that I was going to sell/pass on but that he liked, etc). Sometimes he’s not (rewatching certain movies or episodes of things that will bring up memories). What OP did in story 3 is take away his new wife’s agency and consent and that’s just gross.

One time i was on my bike going down the street with my friend who was walking. We were crossing a street, I went in front of a car and he went behind. Well the driver was only looking to the left when he tried to make a right turn, and he hit me, knocked me off my bike. Of course the thought of calling the police and all that crossed my mind, but the guy, a youngish Mexican- maybe late 20s early 30s, was just saying “sorry “ (in Spanish) over and over again. He was driving a pretty old and beat up car, and in my mind, I could call the police and potentially sue this guy, but how many people depend on him? How many people’s lives would take a turn for the worse, financially, if I were to sue him? He most certainly hit me but I had no injuries, maybe a small bruise - nothing memorable... and there was no damage to my bike... so I just let him go. No harm came to me and I didn’t want to be an evil person to take money from a person who is already clearly struggling. There was always the possibility of him being illegal or a family member being illegal, and people finding out because of a spotlight on the family... I just felt that I would do more harm to him that he did to me

Story 4 I took a ethics class in college which taught me there are several ethical/"what's right" ways to judge things. Bassically, there is no "right" or "wrong" way for OP, just different ethics they will follow, which can be seen as a similar or different path than what others would have gone. There is the ethics that is structured by rules and laws (Like suing for the money because it is their right by law) Societal ethics (Basing the decision on the outcome for everyone even if it isn't good for op, like dropping the claim even if they may be lying) Ethics of professional matters (If the vehicle is owned by OP's work then if they don't go after the woman it could fall on Op's shoulders for any future damage of the vehicle. OP may have undiagnosed physical damage due to the crash which they will be liable for since taking the blame for the crash legally) And the ethics that follow personal values and beliefs (The OP's personal beliefs and morals will sway them to think more one way than the other, as stated in the first few sentiences of the post)

Last story: if it was me, as I wouldn't be in as fortunate position as this guy, I would take pains to set up a payment plan first. I would get this down in writing and even get it in writing. As she's fleeing with her life in her car, I would give her a grace period of six months to find steady employment, a start date to start paying me back, and agree to let her pay me back a minimum of $20 a month (she can of course give me more than that each time to pay it down faster). I'd track the payment, and agree that she can have four years from the six month date to have it paid back before I start seeking legal action. Again, this is all in writing. I appreciate her situation, I know most people in her situation would want the opportunity to make it right without feeling guilt, I'm all about making reasonable allowances and I know this kind of lenient deal would never fly in a court or magistrates. I'm not the OP though -- I can't waive away $400 like it's nothing, because it's not nothing to me.

Exactly, then also consider this. What if she hit someone else, someone elderly or someone with children in the car and they actually got injured or god forbid killed because of her driving recklessly. I can understand escaping but being reckless about it rather than more careful puts you more at risk of making mistakes that will screw you over which will make getting away harder if not ruin the attempt entirely. I'm not saying that she shouldn't have tried getting away but that she should be more careful while driving because if she accidentally killed somebody in the process "Sorry I'm escaping abuse" will not cut it with those who will blame her for the death of their friend/family member.

Story 3 - I don't get how people don't understand, if you are keeping something a secret, then you know it's wrong! Why else would you keep it a secret?? What he did was really creepy! Story 4 - Wow. This really hit home for me. I wasn't running from an abusive relationship but I was an 18 year old single mother with a two year old. I wasn't getting child support, had a minimum wage job and I could not afford insurance. I got in an accident and I swear to you, there was no damage to that car but the man was a complete and utter asshole! I had to pay $1000 for nothing! I could only afford very small payments at a time and his lawyer would even harass me. It was awful! There was no compassion there at all but a little bit would have went a long way.

At worst, this is Lawful Neutral. It's the letter of the law, and she was driving without insurance (a real no-no in my state at least). In my case, I couldn't afford the accident, so...would I still be TA? I don't think so. "But you're not being BEATEN!" Yeah? So now there's a spectrum of issues we have to look at before the law comes into play? I see. I don't think it works that way. NTA. Can't do the time, don't do the crime.
@MsBELLE7
@MsBELLE7 3 жыл бұрын
In my opinion (I work in a prison and watch a ton of crime stories) this could be the thing that saves this woman or condems her. There's a very good possibility she is running from someone who might try to harm her and her kids. She probably has no money, so if she's taken to court, then found not able to pay, her name is put into public record, she might go to jail lose her kids to this other person and then be found and harmed, possibly killed. Because it happens far more often than people want to realize. Seriously. Foster kids can't have photos of them taken because of this kind of stuff. So yeah hes TA for not taking the chance to use his good opportunities in life for something good. He could be saving a 4 lives. Or he could condem them all. He has the money, has obviously been lucky enough to never experience this kind of pain or fear. He should be kind since he can. Even as a broke person myself if this was the case and I got hit by this woman. I'll live, my life is pretty stable. Ill figure it out. She can't atm. Compassion can have just as big of a ripple effect as acting on principle does.
@FEKana
@FEKana 3 жыл бұрын
@@BronzeDragon133 Except the law does take conditions into account. So yes circumstances actually matters. Such as cases were abuse victims kill their abuser in a bid to just escape. Some states will give leeway to the victim as long as they can prove thag the victim was under intense emotional disturbance during the crime,which could help excuse victim's actions. They also need to prove other things like history of abuse etc. I'm not a lawyer,just a student studying a bit of law,and from my understanding...yes the law really does depend on circumstances. So we really should go with the "Can't do the time, don't do the crime" way of thinking. But to be fair,the Op would have a winning case against her. Personally I'd just take the loss,but then again I don't own a car so I wouldn't know how I feel about the situation.

That last story I would go with NTA. Affording repairs is one thing, but he is out of that money because of someone else. The lady though could pay in increments like a few dollars per week and neither of them need to go to court. It doesn’t matter the situation, the lady was in the wrong. The overall situation is very complex and messed up for both of them and the choice op has to make is whether or not to be a better person and let everything slide and help the woman by not suing her. Story 4 A lot for the replies read over don't mention that if OP does let the woman go without a trail then if OP ends up having underlying injuries from the collision then OP will likely have no coverage since they take on the responsibility of the collision from a legal standpoint. Then he refused to return my security deposit because there was a stain on the carpet. He SOLD the house! Took him to court and I lost. He was so paranoid he thought his realtor and I were in cahoots because she sold me my house. The best part was the woman who bought the house called the realtor a week or so later complaining the AC stopped working. Realtor said, "Welcome to home ownership." I may be controversial in saying this but story 4 ESH. Yeah the woman is going through a tough time at the minute (according to what she told OP), but she was driving recklessly and not paying attention with children in the car. That's never okay in my eyes. What if one of the kids hadn't been wearing a seat belt? They could have been seriously injured. OP should look into the validity of her story, and if it all adds up and they still want to pursue a legal option they are a bit on the a-hole side, but not enormously so in my eyes. @@LS-jv9hp Did he though, not say it how he meant? I think he might've found it difficult to separate the two if they looked physically alike. I only guess this because instead of spraying her perfume on a pillow, a shirt, etc he gave it to his wife just so he could have the scent of his previous wife when his current wife is around. Scent is a very personal thing, that's why widows will keep a shirt of theirs, have a perfume/cologne of theirs and spray the shirt, blanket, etc. You associate that scent with that person and it brings comfort; that's not the issue. The issue is when you have your partner, unknowingly, wear your previous spouses scent to give you comfort in memory of them and not the living breathing person in front of you. You end up mixing their scents together and that's not fair to anyone involved. Not the individual, not the passed spouse, or the current spouse. In short, she deserves to have her own "scent" that he loves and associates with her. He doesn't have to forget or even get rid of his previous wife's perfume; just not have his current wife wear it, even if he doesn't make her. Him not telling her and asking others not to tell her shows he knows he's in the wrong but he's still recovering from her passing and it's not healthy to mix the scent of his previous partner with current.

Scent has a much bigger impact on memories than anything else. Sure, you can see photos and videos of loved ones and think, this is the best way for me to remember them, but then you’ll be walking through a store one day, pass by someone wearing a perfume or cologne of the person you miss and your brain and heart will light up like, “They’re here!” until your eyes can communicate to your brain that they are not, and it’s like a punch in the gut.

1) NTA, if the grandmother really did give OP the ring then she did nothing wrong. 2) NTA, wanting you to keep paying after you move out? HAH! This woman is funny! 3) YTA man, seriously: “At some point, I bought it for my current wife as a gift and asked her to wear it” ... that’s kind of implied with perfume so that would’ve been weird before you even start. You asked everyone not to say anything, and they agreed and now your wife is rightfully miffed at you ... you gotta let go sometime man cos it sounds like you never got over Wife #1 (Also don’t lie, you knew you were TA when you a) asked everyone else not to say anything and b) didn’t tell your wife yourself what the perfume meant to you!) 4) NTA because a) the story about the husband could easily be bunk she made up for sympathy but also b) she was driving carelessly with children in the car! Thanks for the new vid Mark 💙🐱💙

That last one annoys me with everyone jumping on the bandwagon on YTA. In OP's shoes I think I would keep in contact with the woman to both help her and look into whether she is actually telling the truth, maybe get the police involved with helping her out. There are programs for helping women out of abusive relationships. People use lies to pull on your heartstrings in order to get out of a situation all the time. When I first moved to the city and saw beggars at every corner I drove in certain areas, I felt bad, until my sister who I moved to be with warned me that most of the time it's a scam and they just want extra money or drug money, so instead I remain cautious and also discerning, only giving if I can see clearly, that they are in actual need. It's easy to preach "do the good thing", when you're not the one who has to make the choice. You can bet these people telling OP to drop it, have never done anything themselves to actually help anyone out of a bad situation, have never actually sacrificed anything, or gone out of their way to help someone in need, except in such situations as Christians/Catholics dropping a few bucks into the donation basket, and such.

imma be controversial and go with NAH in the last story. OP's car was hit, they incurred damages that they were not at fault for, they are entitled to financial compensation. End of story. Yes, they could be kind and drop it, and that'd make them EXTRA NTA- but overall, they were not responsible for the accident, their property was damaged, they are legally entitled to compensation. To me, it's similar to any "should I give relative in (awful situation) my (item)?" No, it's your property and you are not in the wrong for protecting it, even if the other person's circumstances are unfortunate. Assuming she's telling the truth, the other driver is NTA, either. She was escaping from an abusive situation and needed to get away- fast. This does not excuse her reckless driving. What if she had killed someone? What if she'd totaled your car? Would they be calling YTA then? As a fellow survivor, I absolutely sympathize with her, so despite her driving I'd say she's NTA. I can understand the stress of that situation, and the fear that follows from your ex being able to find you through court records and owing money you don't have the ability to pay. Ultimately though, the crash was her fault, and she is the only one responsible for compensating you. In my opinion, you should absolutely drop it. But protecting your property does not make you TA regardless of the other person's circumstances. You have the chance to take the high road and be the better person. You should take it. But even if you don't, I will not label you TA. Just be sure you're okay with the implications on your moral character taking this route will hold.

NtA in the last story. God knows if the story she told was true. And if she would truthfully pay back the money she could have suggested a payment plan herself (because some comments say that they would do it in OPs situation.) She lied about having insurence and then about paying back the money. I can totally understand OP. It is his car and it was lucky that nothing major happened but the woman can't just get the "I get abused" card (I don't believe her and many people just say it to get pity) to get out of these situations.

I was in line to purchase some face cream or something, and I saw the woman behind me was holding a bottle of the shop’s signature perfume. I commented that it was a great scent. She agreed, and told me that she actually likes it very much, but she is returning it because it’s what her ex/girlfriend’s mom wore. Scents are powerful and evocative things. I don’t know that the problem was you didn’t tell her about the perfume, but that you gave it to her at all. Keeping a little bit to remind you of your late wife isn’t creepy, it’s understandable. Giving it to your second wife, not telling her how you are familiar with the scent, and then insisting, long-term, that other people not tell her... that is creepy.

I've helped someone in an abusive situation and when I asked for payment for the service, I went above and beyond, she refused to pay and threatened to set abusive husband on me ! I do worry for story 4, because if she's telling the truth, and she is escaping her husband (abusive, maybe?), the public record from small claims could put her in danger. I know that personally, as long as I was physically okay and my car wasn't totaled, I'd let her go. She could be lying, sure, but I don't want to take that chance. I've been in abusive situations and I feel for anyone trying to escape. It's a really tricky situation, because there could be legal ramifications for both parties.

The poor wife finding out all those times he bought her perfume because he wanted his dead wife and wasn't thinking of her at all. And then he doesn't get that his lying by omission their entire marriage and making her a body to stand in is bad. The car accident story: her situation is complicated and OP might be very sorry for pushing it. I work in a tax office, have for years. One year a girl came in that needed the money to escape her boyfriend. He was going to kill her if she didn't get out soon, with a baby in the mix. I couldn't do anything to help her cover the fees, but I made every suggestion to help her try to find a way to get it though slower, but cheaper. She left leaving her documents with me to find the money to cover it. She didn't get the money, and he killed her a few weeks later. And this OP is worried about $400 that he could but won't spend on his car to further put a woman in danger.

Sorry Mark, but I'll have to disagree with the last story. Unless the possibly abusive husband was chasing after her in another car (which, given how the accident played out, seems unlikely), she had no reason to drive recklessly. Also, far too many people are willing to lie to avoid the consequences of her behaviour, so I am skeptical of her story. That being said, it is true that she would at the moment being judgement proof. Where I OP I would wait for her to be in a better financial situation before asking for the money back, but still, NTA for me.

The last story presents an interesting moral conundrum. On the one hand, OP is right in having the letter of the law on his side. She crashed into him, and in the legal sense, they have every right to sue. But when the moral aspect comes into play, the plot thickens, as the woman seems to be running from an abusive relationship. The only evidence for this, however, is her word alone. This is where more evidence is needed. Hearsay like that is not enough, considering OP’s fondness of the law. If, however, more evidence could be provided (anything from an angry voicemail to a police report of domestic violence), then, in the moral sense, OP would be in the wrong if they still proceeded. Even if the woman is lying, she appears to be an impoverished single woman with children. If her story is true, then it would truly speak to the darkness residing within OP if he went after someone in such a sorry state, especially when they have admitted that they have no need to do so. Such cruelty is the kind of thing only reserved for the darkest corners of our society, and of mankind as a whole. Torturing someone in what may be their darkest hour is a kind of evil I dare not fathom. Given the acknowledgment of these facts, I would have to say OP is TA, though the title may not be enough.

At least the guy didn't fly off the handle with her. Most people would have behaved very badly in that situation. Go ahead, pot. Tell the kettle. Her problem doesn't not constitute an emergency on his part. What if she's lying!?😱. Just because he has the money, doesn't mean that she doesn't have to pay.
