Story 5, hair: The weird thing is that OP briefly mentions keeping the hair short for the sake of being normal in public school, but not for child's safety, potential harassment from peers, teacher reprimands, etc. They put emphasis on the control aspect through a spiel of "my rules" and "I won't let you be different." When the kid said "I can do what I want when I'm older," I honestly would have said "Well, yes you can!" And then explain why they shouldn't grow out their hair _at the moment._ Kids have a lot better time accepting your rules when you explain why and show that you are looking out for them rather than using power just because you can. I would have explained "not now" to the kid at the start. The parent is kinda stubborn and doesn't realise that you can influence kids to behave a certain way by showing consideration to them.
@WatsonAndDaughter
@WatsonAndDaughter 3 жыл бұрын
Treating kids like their feelings and thoughts are not important usually ends up translating into kids not feeling like *they* are important. "Because I said so" and "because I'm the adult" is a great way to ensure your kid struggles with ever feeling like an equal human being and that your relationship becomes something negative.

Exactly. No one is okay with being told what to do without having a reason why. Not kids, not adults, no one. It's quite literally human nature to need a reason to do things, and especially in this scenario, the kid doesn't know. About the nephew with long hair... my youngest son loved his aunt more than almost anyone when he was younger. At around 13 years old, he wanted to keep his hair a little longer... not long, but touching his collar, and longer in the front so he could “flip it” back - think Justin Bieber when he was younger. Well, his aunt hated this and expected him to have a “boy” cut, with the back and sides shaved. She berated him about his hair every time she saw him. At one point, before taking him on a promised mini-vacation, she told him they would cancel their trip of he didnt cut his hair. Of course, he got the required hair cut. And that was the last time he spent any time with his aunt. It was sad because they had been so close, and her insistence that he keep his hair the way she wanted it ruined their relationship. And she was the only person on his dad’s side of the family that he was close to, so this meant he had very little time with them after this happened. It really hurt him, and im sure it hurt her as well. The moral of the story? Pick your battles. She sacrificed her close relationship with her nephew because of a phase he went through that only lasted 2-3 years. Such a shame...

Dogs are more friendly to a vegetarian/vegan diet than other carnivorous pets. Like cats are dedicated carnivores so removing meat from their diet is extremely unhealthy. That said, there is no good reason to try and make an animal vegan, as they're just as happy to gulp down a squirrel or mole if they found one. But probably she is buying vegan dogfood to avoid paying into slaughter methods she disagrees with morally. She could also do that by buying meat on a smaller scale with a local butcher.

The last OP posted and update! Edit/Small update - Okay I tried to read all the comments. It hurts to read all the YTA's but you guys are right. I was an absolute asshole. I let my wife read through some of them and she agrees with what you guys are saying. I decided to be the adult and go talk to Andy. I apologised for what I did and told him that I really don't have any issue with his hair, I was just stressed out with my 8yo's behaviour and I lashed out at him. It was not right and I should never have done it, I wish I could take it back but I can't. In turn, Andy told me that he'd been absolutely terrified that he was going to get kicked out, poor boy even had a bag pack just waiting for me to ask him to leave. He told me he felt that I didn't want him in my house and that I thought he was a burden. I have never felt more disgusted in myself, I have unintentionally been making him think that he wasn't welcome, way before I lashed out at him. I had a chat with my wife (apologised to her) and we're currently looking online for new wallpaper and stuff, we want to decorate the guest bedroom that Andy's staying in to make it his bedroom, then hopefully he'll feel more welcome in his new home. I admit it was my wife's idea but I wholeheartedly support it. Andy and I are going to go out shopping for some smaller things for his room (posters,lamps etc.) and just have some time to bond. Things are going a lot better. I spoke to my 8yo about his attitude problem. Like someone suggested, I told him he can grow his hair out over the summer holidays if he wants but he has to stop being so cheeky to myself and his mum and the tantrums have to stop. This has cheered him up a great deal. Over all I am glad I posted here, I really needed the reality check. I know I got pretty defensive at first, I hope you folks can forgive me for that. Thank you all, seriously. I'm glad he finally came around and generally seems to regret his actions

I have to say I kinda see red when people feed their dogs and cats vegetarian or vegan diets. Just no. Maybe vegetarian diet for dogs if it include plenty of fish but plant based diet without any kind of meat is a big fat no. If you are against the gruelty and unnatural living situation towards cows, pigs whatever, then isnt it quite hypocritical giving food that isnt fit for your own pet and possibly causing it shorter life span, illnesses or even death because of it? Dog story is an ESH imo. I don't understand putting animals in a vegan diet, regardless if dogs are omnivorous or not. I don't know much on any health reason for dogs to require that diet but I think vets would at least still advise feeding dogs some meat every now and then. Why take in an animal when you can't accept their basic diet? OP seems to be hiding a few things too. Why is the dog on a vegan diet? What's her relationship with her sister and niece? Is she also practicing veganism? I doubt anyone would act so unreasonably like taking the dog unless other factors came into play. But it does not warrant the consequences of the dog-napping either. Sister and niece should have discussed this with OP civilly. Personally, I wouldn't pull away the funds but I'd at least ban them from my house.

Me: *listening to the nephew with long hair story, and looking at my 4 year old son with nearly waist length hair Also me: um, what is normal anyway? If the school doesn't have a "hard rule" about boys with long hair, let the 8 year old have long hair, though a discussion about proper care and hygiene is a MUST. Being worried about it being "frowned upon" is an indication that OP cares more about what other adults think than if his child is happy with his appearance and sense of self. As far as the "fun" color goes, it's understandable if the school has rules about dyed hair.

If you somehow managed to find a vet who is okay with that bit of disgustingness, I'd be super concerned about the care they provide for anything else. It's the most basic thing that you do not alter the diets of carnivore & omnivore animals as they aren't able to consent to that nonsense & it's going against their very nature as an animal. If you want a pet who is vegetarian/vegan get one that lives that way naturally. That person is a terrible vegan. Eww. You know some dogs actually do have allergies to the meats commonly used in dog food? If the vet says the dog is healthy and the dog seems healthy why does it matter. We don't know if the dog has allergies or something
@tazhienunurbusinezz1703
@tazhienunurbusinezz1703 3 жыл бұрын
@@jinxstheories4263 Yea, a meat allergy is a thing, however, they absolutely would have mentioned that had it been the case with this OP, especially because they were getting shit for altering an animal's natural state of being down in the comments because...duh, of course they were. There would also likely be supplements, in the case of a dog having that extremely rare allergy because of that fact, which was also, curiously, not mentioned either. You don't get to mess with an animal's natural diet for no legitimate reason & still try claim the moral high ground. Nope. If in your vegan journey, you cannot handle having your dog or cat eat it's necessary diet, don't get a darned dog or cat. It's really that simple. Changing an animal's natural diet is super gross just because they simply cannot give informed consent to it. Feeding your animal sustainably & using the best practices according to science is a wonderful thing. Turning any omnivore or carnivore vegan absolutely goes against nature though. If I'm otherwise trying to minimize my impact on the animal world, it's also a REALLY weird thing to do. My doggos would likely be eating the same types of things I feed them if they lived & hunted alone or in a pack anyway.

Story 5: What a terrible uncle. Andy isn’t responsible for this kid’s temper tantrums, and he shouldn’t have to cut his hair to stop them. Also, even if he DID cut his hair, would that even stop the kid from wanting long hair? He seems pretty fixated on it, and cutting the hair might just make him want it more. He’s belittling both his eight year old’s feelings and that of Andy’s for arbitrary and stupid reasons.

Title Story: OP is NTA for getting upset for violations to her privacy. I don't CARE what the orientation is in a child. That child needs to learn that peeping is a NONO! The niece should have gotten punished for violating another's privacy. Just because she was exually curious doesn't mean she is entitled to satiate her desires by creeping on someone else. Her own flesh and blood no less, that isn't just violating privacy, that incest and she needs to get therapy to teach her that sexual desires for her own family is wrong on SOOO many levels. The mother here is an asshole for linking sexual orientation to what social taboos one can get away with.

Story 3 - NTA. Moving forward, try and have a conversation with the niece. The same if you catch a boy peeping. Why were you looking? This is why it's wrong..., this is why I'm upset... I would assume she has been told that peeping at people, or anything for that matter, is a violation of your safety. Have her tell you what she would feel like an react if someone was sneaking peeks at her. If she has reached the age to express to her family about her sexuality, she's ready for a grown up conversation on boundaries. This goes for the parents as well. Her sister should know better. Giving the niece a free pass is the along the lines of "boys will be boys"! Uhm no. Your NTA, sister is.

story 5 - The hair is really not the issue because the little boy started speaking of all the things he was going to do when he was grown up. That is just a child day-dreaming. The father should just say, "that's nice", instead of arguing. If the child is being rude and belligerent in his comments, the father should say, "when you're grown you will have the right to make your own decisions, just like I do, but until then I expect you to be polite when you talk to me." I think that is the issue, not Andy's hair. Just apologize and tell Andy he's a good kid for heavens sake. Then the dad would be setting an example of the kind of behavior he expects from his son.

Story 5: The uncle is wrong, and first of all, he should admit that to his nephew and apologize. Maybe the eight-year-old will get over his desire for long hair. But maybe it would help to have him grow his hair out a little bit? There was a boy in my class and from 1st to... I think 3rd or 4th grade, he had about shoulderlength hair. And yes, he did look different, but none of us kids thought twice about it. At that age, it's probably only the adults who care. Either of those is less confusing to your children than "it's okay for your cousin to have long hair, but not okay for you." Not allowing long hair on boys in your house is like a level 4 AH move, but allowing the cousin to have it and not allowing your sons to have it is like a 7/10 AH move, followed up by the 8/10 "forcing or tricking him into cutting the hair."

I say ESH on Story 5. OP sucks for the outburst, but tempers can't be held indefinitely. 8 year old is having a rude, disrespectful attitude to his parents. That's NOT on. And the wording Andy used in telling him is partially to blame for that, so that's why Andy sucks. Not for the hair, but for causing the attitude in his little cousin. 8 year old sucks for the attitude. If it was just, "When I'm older, I can have my hair how I want" it wouldn't be a problem. But it wasn't JUST that. It was also the "No matter what my STUPID mom and dad say about it!" part. Nobody has the right to say that to their parents at EIGHT.

1. Kidnapping a dog deserves serious consequences. Veganism isn't for every dog, but if the vet said it's okay, what they did is even more difficult to justify. 2. It doesn't matter if they paid for it; it was never for sale! Money doesn't make taking stuff any better, no matter what this weirdo thinks. 3. Peeping on a family member is bad, regardless of either one's gender. This niece gives lesbians a bad name. 4. She's an adult; it shouldn't matter to anyone else what she wears. That wasn't what OP said though, nor is it really why he's supportive of her, is he? 5. Maybe I'm biased because I like my hair longer, but OP's a terrible father and uncle. The new intro is adorable. 1. NTA, you don’t steal someone’s pet. And a family members pet? No. Taking the dog randomly like that has got to be purely petty. I doubt it had to do with the dog’s welfare over diet choice of the owner. Not saying that, that couldn’t necessarily be a concern of theirs but their pettiness/greed overshadows that. P.S. some dogs can indeed eat vegetarian and even vegan diets and be perfectly happy and healthy, with the aid and/or advice of a veterinarian. I know of a few good puppers that *had* to have plant based food. Normal doggy diets made them sick.

Story 1: NTA, Timeout and no money seems like a good idea, maybe they'll think twice about consequences next time. Story 2: NTA, I like this way of taking revenge for things, it's certainly better than destroying something of her stuff and suing someone over that (small claims maybe?) wouldn't be worth it. Best thing would've been to just take it back, but would fall flat if she decided to wear it this day. But imagining OP being like "Excuse me cousin ... *OP opens various zippers* ... *OP takes off the dress* ... ok I'm done, you can go on now" would also be funny. Story 3: One could argue that it wouldn't be the biggest problem to apologize in this situation to (and I don't like to say that) "keep the peace", but I don't see why it would be necessary. The niece put herself in this situation and now she has to live with the consequences. I don't really know why her mom is so invested in this and not the niece herself, she's just emberassed as it seems and that'll be a while, apology or not. Maybe she should question her sister next, insistence often comes from taking things personal. Story 5: I see where OP is coming from and to a certain degree he is right, it's not completely Andy's fault that the 8yo is acting up, but he certainly enables that behavior with thoughtless comments. No idea how mature the boy is and if he would understand a more in depth explanation (nothing too advanced, just a little bit), but this whole Andy thing seemed like a trigger for everything that came afterwards. Best course of actio would probably to apologize and think of a way of how to deal it in the future together. And maybe keep an eye out and get a professional to take a look a the kid, might be something that tries to settle in now and that'll be harder to deal with in the future.

Story 1: Not every dog can be fed vegan food without negative consequences, but if the vet makes the call that it's okay you have to conclusively show that they are wrong _before_ even considering such drastic measures like stealing someone's dog over it (and it still wouldn't be the recommended course of action if legal options are available). And even if they had done that there is no reasonable expectation, least of all a legal obligation, to still get a gift from the offended party, let alone an expensive one like a college fund. So, while I can charitably assume that the sister's and niece's initial intentions were good they went about it in a stupid and asshole-ish way, and OP is NTA for showing them the consequences. Story 2: For a contract to exist there has to be an agreement between buyer and seller to exchange goods versus money. In this case the "buyer" unilaterally decided on a price. There was no agreement, so there was no contract and no price. The money OP got from her "friend" is not payment for the dress and both this "friend" and her mother are brazenly stupid for saying it is. Their cluelessness sounds a bit like rich people syndrome from the information given. A cake-less birthday party is merely the surprised Pikachu face moment they deserved. OP is NTA. Story 3: Apologizing for inqhiring about being peeped upon _to the person doing the peeping_ just because they had to come out as a lesbian in order to come clean? That's a pass from me. What's OP's ethically meaningful choice here? Not inquire and just enable sexually abusive behaviour that is no less creepy when it comes from a lesbian? Nope, OP is NTA. Story 4: If anyone was disrespectful here it was FIL by treating his daughter like a possession of her husband and OP like an immature child unable to make his own ethical judgments. Sure, teasing FIL with the mini-skirt remark was a bit unnecessary but it's a fair and on-topic retort to his presumtuousness. OP is NTA. Story 5: OP is TA and he knows it, clearly indicated by his last paragraph. I get how his 8 year old is getting on his nerves, but that's no justification to blow up at his nephew and threaten him with unreasonable demands. OP should take his own advice and apologise to him, not let the situation simmer.

Story #1 NTA - OP sounds like a responsible dog-owner; they spoke to a veterinarian and a nutritionist to make sure the dog food was okay, that's better than most pet owners do. Thus trying to steal away his dog would be an extremely distressing experience. The college fund was a gift, and you're not obliged to give gifts to people who hurt you. Story #2 NTA - If I was in OP's place I would have told them "I don't want money, I want my damn dress back. Give it back or we're no longer friends" and if they still didn't give it back then I'd call the police for theft or taken it to court. Story #3 ESH - I'm going to start out by saying that OP doesn't owe the niece an apology because the niece shouldn't have been doing that - gay people are just as capable of self-control as straight people so that's no excuse for peeping on her aunt. The niece shouldn't have done that and the mother shouldn't have defended her. Having said that, OP is an asshole for accusing her nephew of being a pervert with very little evidence (and I suspect based on the assumption that boys are perverts). I'm guessing that "things got heated" meant OP screamed at the nephew and kept pushing the accusation. If the mother didn't take his side, or if the niece didn't confess to it, then this could have easily resulted in severe psychological trauma and self-loathing for the nephew. Apologizing to him was the right thing to do but OP needs to make sure the nephew understands she doesn't think ill of him. OP should also take this as a lesson against jumping to conclusions. It bothers me how all the comments forget about the nephew and how he'd be feeling. Story #4 ESH - You embarrassed your wife for the sake of pissing off her in-laws. While she can dress how she wants and it's right of OP support her, that's no reason to create more drama. Story #5 YTA - OP is blaming Andy for something the 8-year is doing, which is just wrong. Moreover Andy and OP's kid are correct in saying that the kid can live as he pleases when he's an adult. OP should make the first move and apologize to Andy. Make it a real apology too, admit to being wrong. That's the only way OP can salvage your relationship with Andy and it'll be healthy for the child to learn that parents are humans who make mistakes too.
