Each of the main characters has superpowers which complement their personalities: ~ Bob is the foundation of the family and set in his ways; hence, he's incredibly strong and virtually indestructible ~ Helen is very maternal and a versatile homemaker; hence, she's very elastic, highly resilient, and extremely flexible ~ Violet is timid, shy, and extremely vulnerable; hence, she is able to turn invisible and create protective force fields ~ Dash is the poster child for Ritalin; hence, he has boundless energy and incredibly fast ~ Lucius is easy-going and the epitome of coolness; hence, he has versatile ice powers Syndrome's lair is on Nomanisan Island, referencing John Donne's 1624 prose "No Man is an Island". This theme is central to Bob's character arc. The two old men at the end are caricatures of and voiced by Frank Thomas and Ollie Johnston, the last of the "Nine Old Men" - the core group of animators who put Disney on the map with classic animated movies beginning with Snow White. Brad Bird toured Disney studios as a child (11) and fell in love with animation. Milt Kahl (another of the Nine Old Men) later personally mentored Bird (then 14) and helped him obtain a scholarship through Disney to attend Cal Arts. Brad Bird has since found a way to include and/or reference the Nine Old Men at every opportunity. As Brad Bird's first production with PIXAR, he was unaware of the significance of the Pizza Planet truck - making The Incredibles the *ONLY* PIXAR film (thus far) to not include it. As production was wrapping up, he learned of both this and John Ratzenberger being PIXAR's "lucky charm". While he was unable to work the Pizza Planet truck into the final movie, he added the closing scene with the Underminer at the last moment for the sole purpose of providing Ratzenberger with a speaking role in the movie.

What I love about this movie (all the fun superhero stuff aside, and even aside from the "family" dynamic) is the fact that the central conflict between Bob and Helen is very nuanced; both of them are correct, and both of them are wrong, about various parts of what they think about their lives and their place in the world. Bob is missing what's happening now, and Helen is ignoring their history with each other, when they should both be doing both. Which makes the whole "learn from each other" plot of the climax so convincing and beautiful.

There’s always been subtle things about this movie I loved the little things that don’t get talked about in the dialogue. For the the opening interviews help a lot to figure out the characters early on. You see not only them infront of the reporter looking their best and cracking jokes but them immidiatly see how they actually do their hero work. Bob’s first remarks in the interview are ‘I feel like the maid like ‘hey I just cleaned up this mess can you keep it clean for 10 minutes!.’ Is a wild joke for him to make, not only because HE causes 99% of property damage when fighting (and fights aggressively pulling out trees and violently shaking them smashing in the front of a car while passenger are hanging out a window, dive bombing an already free falling target so all the impact force of the crash hits the catches individual, and mr. Incredible stopping the train by holding it as a break but not trying to intentionally slow the vehicle just act as a full wall which buckles the road below.) His remarks of what a maid would say are totally out of this world for an actual maid to say. They are maids who always do the dirty work and that’s the gig they don’t complain to the bosses or the guests faces, they understand in life messes will be made. He’s told to be more flexible and more loose with everything he does. Have your schedule be flexible, have public relationships (especially with kids) be flexible and understanding, think about what’s happening in the moment and be flexible not the block/barrier/overwhelming force and Bob says he will but never actually does-- and it takes till the end of the movie where he breaks and screams ‘I can’t lose you’ for Hellen to understand as to why he can’t be flexible. He does care he really does deep down about keeping everyone safe (he rarely ever gets hurt or in pain thanks to his durability but it also means his fights are done so He doesn’t feel injury or as severe injury as anything else. He looks out for himself works alone and keeps himself safe 24/7 while also keeping everyone as safe as they can be compared to dead.) ‘I think you broke something- after counseling I think you’ll come to an understanding.’ (Instead of the man going to medical counseling where he would be told his wrong in his thought process/decision making was poor and affirm Mr.Incredible he went to a legal counsel to represent him and defend him/his arguments as being priority and he financially paid them to do so.) They’re safe vs they’re in danger mentality … if they’re in danger any any success rate is better then failure even if the success means injury/damages. He also sees himself as the hero (not a maid not a clerk not anything else a hero or nothing at all) he still thinks it’s safe/death situation ongoing 24/7 just that he’s not allowed in any way to stop it. It’s why he’s a vigilante but also why he has such a breakdown in the office with his boss. ‘He lost - the bad guy got away, how does it feel as Mr.Incredible to have a 0 losses streak broken by your 3ft tall rude as hell boss, who’s corporate, and who doesn’t care about your feelings, and who doesn’t care about the crime, who only cares about the policy of making money not stopping robberies. How does it feel to know you can stop a train but be held back by yellow tape or scotch tape and staples to the point you can’t interact in what’s practically a sidewalk shuffle for someone of your skills.’ Bobs other lines like dialogue with buddy are pretty harsh from you’re #1 biggest fan and like 11. ‘Sorry buddy I work alone to I HAVE NO AFFILIATION WITH YOU! while throwing them in a cop car. It’s still a kid you still have to drop a knee look em in the eyes and comfort them in dangerous circumstances It’s just like such a well done character of an everyday man coping with the fact he can do better but systems don’t allow progression at the rate he requires, and a hero who needs to save people because he cares about them and their normal lives just being normal and not being harmed. Knowing crime will never stop and that they will always respond to it and do so happily without complaint because they do find enjoyment they aren’t feeling like a maid/clerk forced to work and clean up messes and they aren’t enjoying seeing the messes and cleaning them up. At the end of the film the are actually enjoying normal life as a family which makes you wonder if bobs felt this the entire time he’s been married while raising the kids is this the first great family experience they’ve had in normal society? Are they finally enjoying it and participating in regular life as a happy family postcard but in an actual good way? When they see the next Villian it’s not a someone’s gonna get hurt senario they’re all supporting one another but also not in the mind state of the Villians won’t stop they will hurt you and anyone else, the Villian is a goon to them no matter the threat level it’s become silly and non threatening because they’re self assured and have support of their loved ones at their side. They smile at the end of the film not because there is a Villian and they’re gonna get into a superhero moment fight they’re smiling because they’re doing it together as a family activity and having even more freedom and fun (being flexible and themselves) and spending time together on it and doing good work together as a family dynamic. There’s no maid, there’s no mess, there’s no clean up and yelling. No one’s alone in a mess. There’s the family all doing every part together with eachother and doing so happily and peacefully. If there’s a mess they clean it together as it happens and move on to the next thing they have planned as a family with excitement. Bobs reaction to having to clean/do small delicate tasks is hysterical when he priorly called himself the maid. He breaks the plates, breaks the car, causes water damage and smoke with a baby in the house, and generally doesn’t wash the baby/vaccine the floors but lifts the furniture up and down for Helen who always has to swing back around to clean the house and I find it to be realistic but a funny nod to how Bob acts in a rush in secret independently and thinks his superhero wife can’t get a clue. She is tidy she did all the unboxing, washed the baby in the sink had dinner made cleaned and organized she got the nanny sorted out she takes the kids to school and activities she awesome she’s on top of any task given to her because it’s alot to do but she’s putting all her hero effort energy and skills into it. It is her priority and her focus now and it’s normal but it’s wonderful to know they’re growing up safe and relatively happy. (Even if it may be a slump for them she’s happy in being with them and for them and seeing what lies ahead in the future. So maybe class sucks (to dash) but hey after you graduate you get a party and you get to do something fun you’d like etc (normal mom conversation, leads to her and Bob arguing about celebrating the graduation at all when for Dash specifically it is probably a good idea to keep him engaged with progression and positive rewards as he’s so fast paced that attending class feels like an exceptionally long time even if it’s just 4th to 5th grade it could have felt like years for Dash who wants to be moving 600x the speed of everyone else in the room.) Helen’s outburst it’s not about you is so intense and motherly because she’s right Bob it’s not about how you feel about a kid moving up a grade, it’s about your actual sons feelings and recognizing his efforts and work to participate as a ‘normal person’ while wanting to be superhero active 24/7 AND learning everything in class and all of the small homework arguments and detentions and other things like lunch boxes of which Bob doesn’t focus on or participate in. Bob doesn’t see all the small steps and hard work put into just 1 day he doesn’t know his son gets detention or reprimanded till way later and his lack of understanding results in him finding the situation funny not serious. He’s not taking Dash’s education feeling or efforts into consideration and not taking the outbursts into consideration just thinking ‘wow how fast do you think you were using your powers?’ To which Helen has to be like ‘seriously? This isn’t about speed the focus is on class and not stabbing a teacher out of boredom Bob!’

@MageBurger8 ай бұрын
An underrated part of certain character deaths is the “oh no…” moment beforehand, especially with a character as egotistical as Syndrome. That “oh no” contrasting the sense of immortality is almost like their very instincts KNOW THEY WILL DIE. Also yeah, being sucked into a jet turbine followed by being caught in a massive explosion does a pretty good chunk of the work.

31:40 the moment Bob starts seeing the bigger picture. Helen has vision of Violet and is still completely wrapped up in what Bob’s saying, to the point she doesn’t care about their freedom. It’s literally his entire arc in this film- He’s finally realized he’s been living for the past when he has so much to be thankful for all around him. Great moment made even funnier with Helen’s “don’t interrupt!” 🤣❤️

I still remember the strong "James Bond" vibe I got when I first watched this, and Mr Incredible is infiltrating the base. Superhero movie meets spy thriller meets family comedy/drama, without feeling overstuffed or confusing. Fantastic film.

Well Brad bird did say he took inspiration from Sean Connery's James bond. And Disney nearly hired the guy who scored most of James bond movies John Barry to score in incredibles. And they even went to put on her majesty's secret service theme song in their trailer. John Barry would unfortunately back out for some reason

The question was why did Mr. Incredible rev the van engine just before touchdown. The reason is that having the wheels turning will do nothing while in the air, but at the moment of touchdown, the speed of the wheels will more closely match the speed of the pavement.

I remember seeing this movie in theaters when it came out. The music score for the movie is crazy on movie theater stereos. That trumpet parts especially. Great movie. Great music. Definitely timeless. If you get a chance, jam out to the soundtrack. You won’t regret it. It was written by Michael Giacchino who has done the score for several major Hollywood blockbusters. Really enjoyed his score for Rogue One as well. He pulled that one off in four months.

I’m not sure if anyone caught the detail but Buddy remembers the the night with Bon voyage different. Bob was actually restricting bon voyage from moving when he tells buddy to “Fly Home” for his safety. However Buddy remembers it as Mr Incredible shewing him away like he was nothing. Did you know that they offered Brad Bird the chance to direct Star Wars Episode VII, the force awakens... and he turned it down? (I think they were right in offering it to him - they wanted the best of the best of the best. He wanted to do Incredibles 2, ...and it's hard to blame him. Episode 7 turned out nicely (it was the most solid of the Disney trilogy); but if someone else had directed 'Incredibles 2,' that would have felt way wrong.)

To answer your questions for why Bob pushes the throttle before landing the van at 33:08 When you push the throttle in mid air the centripetal force of the wheels makes the car rotate nose up very slowly. Nose down with reverse. You can see it used in dirt biking or trophy truck racing, anywhere the vehicle ends up in the air. I think it’s actually easiest to see in those little Rc cars though. Just look up Rc car flipping. You also want to speed the wheels up before impact so you get a smoother landing. The ground underneath you is moving very fast. It would be like jumping out of a moving car.

Okay I'm going to clear a small detail up. When you said what does pressing the gas when they are in the air do the reason is to bring the drive wheels up to speed so you don't go out of control when you land. If your drive wheels aren't at the speed of which you are flying when you land the vehicle will go into a skid and go out of control. Stunt drivers keep the throttle up when they are performing jumps for this very reason.

I always thought the perfect solution to Dash wanting to compete was to let him, just not in events that could leverage his speed. If he found himself resenting this, it would be an oppourtnuity to learn and grow, realising that doing something that he could win easilly is not true competition.

24:12 So, fun fact about this sequence: in an earlier draft of the script, the person that Helen got the jet from (named Snug Porter) was supposed to also fly it for her, and he would've died because of the missiles. That aspect was eventually cut from the script because getting the audience to care about his death took too much time and focus away from the family, and Brad Bird (despite wanting somebody to be lost in the crash) also realized that having Helen be the sole person responsible for her kids' safety worked better for the scene. However, a remnant of that draft made it into the final cut, in the form of Helen pausing to watch the wreckage of the plane as it sinks.
