It seems like we’ve been waiting forever, but Toyota has finally given Tacoma shoppers what they have been asking for: more power and better fuel economy. On that last point however: don’t expect this to be a “bigger Maverick” because that’s not the kind of hybrid system Toyota went with. Instead they focused the new 2.4L turbocharged hybrid at capability with a hint of extra efficiency. Yes it’s likely the most efficient truck in its class in real world driving, but it’ll only be beating the Ranger and Colorado by a few MPG…

$63,900 before markups. Quick math: $6,400 down (10%) + tax and interest (7.64) 60 Months Payment: $1260 @12.5% of take home pay you should be earning $157,500 annually to be looking at this car (assuming the appropriate taxes are coming out of your paycheck). National average wage (US Census): $63795. Percentage making $150k annually: approx. 8.3% 5 Year price increase Toyota Tacoma TRD Pro: 2019 MSRP: $42,960 2024 MSRP: $63,900 49% increase Wage growth 2019-2024: 1.7% (Source: US Treasury) These price increases far outpace inflation and wage growth. Toyota is targeting 8% of total market. Or people who just want to act fiscally irresponsible.

When they stop selling 80% of the trucks they produce, then price cuts will be considered. Until then, you are no longer the target market if you consider this expensive yet the target market is big enough that you simply no longer matter to manufacturers. We live in a society where people take out loans and “overpay” for everything, be it houses, vehicles, vacations, food, or phones. That drives inflation and increasing prices, and no amount of complaints will alter that as long as people continue to pay those prices.

As far as running out of battery, this will only happen if you have the pedal to the floor. In all other conditions, the engine is able to deliver all the power needed and still recharge the battery (at the cost of mpg). Even when towing up a steep hill, the engine is generally powerful enough to maintain speed (once that speed is reached) at the max tow rating without the use of the motor. I can’t think of a situation outside of racing where there will not be enough battery for the full time you floor it (generally less then 30 seconds), and enough time before flooring it again (even a minute will return a lot of energy to the battery) for the engine to recharge enough battery for the next time you floor it. In normal drive mode, when it cycles the battery between charge and discharge, it always saves a buffer of energy for at least 30 seconds of flooring it to give you that extra power on demand even while the battery is at the lowest point in it’s normal drive mode cycle.

The 1990 Toyota pickup had an MSRP of $7,998. Adjusted for inflation, that's about $16K today. Yes, this was a single cab and 2WD, but why are we even imagining paying 4 to 5 times this for two more doors with a miserable backseat, and a 4WD system that would have been a $1500 dollar add on. All these car manufacturers are going to go belly up making vehicles that average people cannot afford. Are you actually feeling the battery go flat with regularity or is this all just hypotheticals? You've mentioned it every time you've reviewed one of these 1 motor hybrids, but I'm struggling to imagine a scenario where the engine power alone doesn't have some headroom -- in a sustained use case -- to push some of that to the battery. Even towing 70mph sustained up a long hill, you aren't likely asking for the full 278hp that the engine itself can provide. Getting to 70mph towing is where you are asking for that max power which is probably 20 seconds of full gas.

Ford and GM and Jeep definitely powering ahead in the midsize market as is Honda actually. Obviously the big winner has been the Ford Maverick as everyone keeps downsizing to the maximum extent possible. US economy definitely heading for a crash leaving aside the one that has already occurred in 2022 and is still ongoing and is now clearly impacting the pure play BEV space. Hybrids have been huge sellers especially for Toyota and Honda so how this plays out over time no small matter absolutely.

@@springertube and @Sean-km7ht I guess if in the specific cases where one is unable (for whatever reason) to use the charging mat and/or the wireless functionality of Android Auto/Apple CarPlay, a more central location would be convenient. But this is a minor niggle, as one could easily and neatly attach a color coordinated USB extension down toward the center console. No matter what, if using a wire, the wire will be exposed to some extent. It certainly wouldn’t be draped in the unseemly manner which they have it, as the driver would surely place their phone in the console. If wishing to use the port directly, as a less permanent option, and locating the side port was an issue, a small dot on the bezel would solve that. Additionally, while it looked as though the port is placed in a very difficult to reach location, it really isn’t, although the wide-angle lens of the camera made it appear otherwise. I’m not asserting that Toyota chose the best location, but only that Alex and his buddy focused on it a bit too much, making much ado about nothing.

The goal of hybrid and electric is to improve efficiency of mobility. I'm sure a boat load of people would like a midsized truck with 32+ MPG, then you have a commuter vehicle. If you wanted to make a more powerful midsized-truck just bring back the darn 8 Cylinder from the Tundra - people love that engine, and I bet it would get about the same gas milage or a few less mpg.

Not sure a hybrid drivetrain is particularly valuable to a Tacoma user compared to the venerable 4 or 6. The mildly better performance and fuel economy are largely offset by higher price, complexity and the likely shorter operational lifetimes of the very expensive ABS, power supply and traction battery components. They are excellent until a giant bill presents itself late in the vehicle life. Having three shorter lifetime components in addition to the normal ICE compenents, increases the liklehood of earlier decommissioning. Plus, somehow each modest new vehicle update seems to result is massive increases in price. Way out of proportion to any benefit provided. These large price increases in assault the constitution of consumers continuously, garnering resentment and resistance among the buying public. After 30 years of buying new vehicles. It is unlikely that I will ever buy another. Painful prices and the resultant depreciation make a new car purchase unworkable.
@JD-yx7be

abs is incredibly reliable my 95 f150 and 96 f250 still have their original, even if they fail i would go the junk yard and get another. Many Volvo's who were one of the first to make them standard are still on their originals 40 years later. I know some early abs units in GM vehicles had a high failure rate but never really heard of many problems in the last 20 years. It is still common to see 2nd gen prius (2003-2009) on the road with over 200k miles on them, many still on the original battery. and they can still drive like a regular gas vehicle with a dead battery
@lawrenceralph7481
@lawrenceralph7481 Ай бұрын
@@JD-yx7be 1. A Toyota hybrid cannot be started with a completely dead traction battery. This is first hand experience with dead Highlander batteries. 2. The ABS unit in a Toyota hybrid is completely different than one in an ice car. It must accommodate both regeneration and safety. It is complicated to disagnose even for experienced Toyota hybrid master mechanics and expensive. In Highlanders it has been the subject of extended warranty due to deficiencies. It's failure often occurs with the traction battery failure as well. (This from experienced battery rebuild specialists). It is not a fatal flaw for the original owner because they occur in the low 200,000 mi range, but the premature failures of the PDS unit, the ABS unit, and the traction battery cause for concern for anyone buying a high mileage hybrid because the repairs are so expensive, they likely are higher than the purchase price of the vehicle.
