Sure, the F-150's hybrid system has a modest impact on fuel economy. The real reason you'll want one, however, is for the added horsepower and the 7,200 watt onboard AC inverter. Need to power a job site? No problem. A house during a blackout? Easy-peasy. An RV while parked without a noisy generator? You betcha. Let's take a closer look at why Ford branded this system PowerBoost in the first place.

Phenomenal video. I purchased Powerboost about two months ago. I live on a ranch in Texas. Here are my thoughts, I was a little disappointed that getting 24 mpg is rare, BUT this is because a lot of the driving is at 70 mph and you aren’t getting the benefit of the electric motor. However , when I am in town I usually get 24mpg plus. Also, it’s Fast ! I tow a Travel trailer that is around 7k loaded and barely notice it. I swear it’s still 0-60 in 9 seconds or so. Also, I use the 7.2kw onboard all the time. I drag out welders, I power compressors, even to wash or fill up tires on the truck itself, I simply roll out my power washer or compressor and power them with the truck, no fooling with extension cables. I power the camper on quick over nights while traveling and the most fuel I’ve ever used was 1/8 tank, that was in 95+ degrees running the AC full time. It is, the best vehicle I’ve ever owned. I’m in love!

Apart from Alex' puns and other examples of his sense of humor, the main reason I subscribe (and send a few bucks each month to support his channel) is that I nearly always learn something when I watch one of his videos. Not living "off grid" and not being a "truck guy" I'm about as likely to shop for a half ton pickup (hybrid or non-hybrid) as a fixed wing aircraft or a 60 ft yacht. Nevertheless, I'm much better informed about the designs of hybrids and EVs in general after watching his videos. (Sometimes repeatedly.) And in this case I'm far better prepared to understand the choices Ford designers and engineers made in the forthcoming F-150 Lightning. Kudos, Alex. It was well worth investing 25 minutes in watching the video about a vehicle I'll never consider purchasing.

This is Alex at his best. As a PowerBoost hybrid owner with the 7.2 generator, I found this to be a sensational video. Thank you, Alex. Over my first 7k miles, I am at 21 mpg, about 60/40 split between street and highway. My prior F-150 had the 3.5 and 10 speed combo, I ended at 17.1 mpg over 22k miles, so I'm happy with the fuel savings so far (no towing).

@@michalp2362 so far no issues with the hybrid system, up to 8k miles now. One of my key fobs died which was annoying after only a few months and the intelligent adaptive cruise (not Blue Cruise, they haven't done the OTA yet for that except for testers) is pretty glitchy. That isn't unique to the PowerBoost of course, so overall I am very happy i chose this engine. Down to 19.8 combined with the cold weather and more idle time, but i just had a short trip where i averaged 24.8 over 70 miles even in low 30s temps.

I have this hybrid truck with 3.73 rear end and over 12,000 miles on it. No problems yet and I’ve settled into 21 mpg average with mixed driving. I see 23-24 mpg on some shortish trips as well as 18-19. Usually see 21.something. I have towed my 16 foot 3200 lb box cargo trailer and mileage is about 10 mpg. Tow anything with any vehicle and mpg will be a sad story. My 2016 2500 Ram Cummins diesel saw 11 mpg towing the same trailer but got 17 to 21 mpg when not towing and of course no generator feature. All in all, I’m very happy with the quieter and more comfortable ride of the hybrid F150 as well as the 7.2kw power feature.

If Ford could get battery cost and weight low enough, a PHEV with a high-voltage pack that supports DCFC and 20 - 30 miles of range would up level up the F150 yet again. Drivers could get most of the benefits of an EV while still retaining the ability to low long distances when needed. Add four-wheel steering as a sweetener for Alex.

@voided3
@voided3 2 жыл бұрын
Agreed. For long distance towing, it's going to take a while to replace internal combustion from both a battery chemistry and charging infrastructure perspective for a full EV, but if you have a plug-in hybrid version of this exact truck that can do an average commute (or even half of it) on battery only, that's a big deal. We either use our Silverado for local errands, ~120 mile highway runs round trip lightly loaded, or long distance towing with a travel trailer. If we could do the errands on battery only and a 1/4 of an unloaded highway run on battery only, that's significant.

I’d love a PHEV F-150. Unfortunately the market just doesn’t seem to want PHEVs. I spend a lot of time answering questions about my Chevy Volt or Pacifica Hybrid, but most people don’t get it. “Only 60 km of electric range, and you have to put gas in it too? What good is that?”
@Remarksman
@Remarksman 2 жыл бұрын
What Dylan said, 100 times over! Same with our Honda Clarity, people don’t get that we only put gas in it once every two or three months UNLESS we take a road trip, and then we CAN take a road trip of ANY distance we want. It’s wonderful and yet people seem to resist “getting it”.

Nice. This is what a hybrid is all about - added functions. A few people have done videos about sleeping in a Toyota Sienna minivan with automatic heating or automatic cooling, and a hybrid is uniquely capable of doing that. It becomes less of a driving thing and more of an all around utility thing. Being able to plug a microwave into your truck is cool as hell and any person who works remotely or camps can appreciate that.

For anybody that’s curious, I have an F-150 hybrid and average 20-21 mpg doing city driving in Florida. You definitely have to be gentle on the throttle and manipulate the car into going electric as often as possible. On flat ground, I’ve found that the car just will not go into full electric past 55 mph, but it’s great for when you are waiting at stop lights or coasting to a stop. Alex is right that the transition between gas and electric isn’t really the smoothest, and at low speeds, the 10-speed transmission can feel a little clunky and annoying at times because of constant gear shifting. Overall, I would still recommend it. It’s a great truck and has no issues towing.

When you were doing the driving test portion of the video, I was saying to myself, why doesn't Ford offer this hybrid with their 2.7L Ecoboost. That would make a lot more sense from a practicality standpoint then you could possibly get 26-27mpg and still have plenty of towing power for 99% of people who buy f150s. Great content Alex! Always enjoy your videos

We have a powerboost and it’s a great truck! I’ve gotten as high as 37 mpg’s doing 50 mph on the Natchez Trace Parkway! Total 63 mile trip average was 29 mpg’s! Interstate driving 75-80 mph = 22 mpg’s. Oh, it’s a 4x4 too!

Being a current owner of the 14" F150 in a super crew cabin and a 6ft bed, I do have the 5.0 liter option with the trailer/tow package, E-brakes in a 4x4. I too tow trailers up to 6,000 lbs +/- regularly but my thorn with the F150 is,... to get the higher towing capability in the same cabin configuration I really would have to go to a F250 which becomes a gas guzzler. I wish,if Ford is going to advertise towing "up too" that this marketing also includes F150 Super Crew with a long bed in 4x4 in 3:55 gears. On long road trips, the F150 drives so much more nicely than a F250 when both are unloaded. Super interested in this new Hybrid but I really gain nothing in towing like a 9000k trailer with better fuel economy.

I'm not sure what your point is, you say you'd need to get an F-250 but then say that the F-150 is capable enough in the right trim. So are you just wanting Ford to advertise more openly? Because a new 5.0 or 2.7 equipped Super Crew 4x4 6.7" bed is definitely possible to find that can tow 10-13k rated pounds.

Truly a fascinating take on a pickup. I really enjoyed your unique perspective! Nicely done and could sway a lot of folks to buy this truck, if they live in areas where electric power loss is possible. All other pickup manufacturers are playing catch-up

first video ive seen from you and glad i found you. You are easy to follow and very informative.I, also have done the off grid setup with solar and wind but long before smart systems. I would love a Lightning but with price hikes and availability issues for years, if I could find a Power boost I would buy it.

Alex, Other than 'a cast of thousands', this video is on par with anything Cecil B. DeMille ever produced. Since I have NO questions left about the F-150, I wonder how often you change the oil in your stationary generators?

Disagree about the (non) engine braking statement. Just finished a 3,000 mile run towing a 6000# trailer, all of it around, up and over the Rockies. 6-7% grades were the norm, scales at trip's beginning showed total weight was 12,000#. I consistently found that using the cruise control to set a down-hill speed would, automatically, result in the truck gearing down to maintain the set speed. I never used manual downshifting. This gear-controlled engine braking never failed us, altho' we might be in 4th or 5th gear at times, based on speed set.

I couldn’t help but notice he said this while towing in Normal Mode. If he was in tow/haul mode he would have had the benefits of the engine breaking. Granted towing in 7k in our Powerboost on the highway in tow/haul especially in the mountains your mpgs are going to dip below 10.

I could really see this being a huge deal with people with pull campers. having power to run the camper litteraly anywere and still have enough physical power to tow a nice small to medium size camper, would be nice to see if they can do something like this with power on the SD for people with huge campers

F-150 with the v8! Because, v8 rumble! But, the Hybrid is a supper cool truck. I like virtually everything about it. But I would lean more toward the Lower more utilitarian spec model Andre purchased on the TFL site. I think his truck is about the ideal F-150.

Very cool review! The main reason for me not getting a F150 hybrid is that it comes only in the Limited trim here (Canada) with a starting price of $97k. This is nuts.
@cwqrpportable
@cwqrpportable 2 жыл бұрын
Huh? I just ordered an F150 hybrid in Lariat trim here in Canada for a whole lot less money than $97K. You can also get the hybrid in as low as the XLT trim in Canada which is considerably cheaper than the Lariat trim. Better check your facts again....

Alex and followers...if Ford also offered the Hesvy Duty Payload package on this Power boost it would be perfect for me. The HDPP gives you about 2500 pounds parade in a mid xlt crew 4 wheel drive 6.5 bed. With the added weight of the hybrid system you would have maybe 2200 pounds? Not sure of the Wright penalty here. But it would be an awesome rig.

The F150 Lightning is definitely the spotlight stealer, but honestly the F150 Powerboost hybrid is the gem of the lineup - you get compact SUV MPG and still retain everything in the regular F150 gas and more - namely the fact you can tow something and still retain somewhat decent range, whereas the Lightning is a great daily but would struggle to better 100mi between charges in the same situation.
