This isn't the first hybrid half-ton, and it is technically not even the only "hybrid" truck on sale in America, but it is the only "full hybrid", and the hybrid with the best sales proposition. Not only does the F-150 PowerBoost get you best in class gasoline fuel economy, you get better performance than the non-hybrid and the ability to run an entire workplace or home off the on-board battery and inverter. Why buy the hybrid? It's not just about the fuel economy anymore...

Hybrids have one enormous advantage for work vehicles that is rarely talked about - idling. People spend a lot of time and gallons idling during their work day - heavy traffic, waiting on call, eating lunch, etc - and this creates a lot of pollution and wear on an ICE engine. A hybrid can do much of this off the battery, and this use case is not likely to be reflected in mpg estimates.

This is a game changer for anyone that owns a half ton towable RV; especially if they like off-grid boondocking. With the onboard generator, and room in the bed for extra water, extra fuel, and supplies, this rig will allow for a great deal of flexibility, insofar as extended stays are concerned.

@@slscamg No arguing that point and you are absolutely correct, but I think the point is more that there are more fuel efficient options available with comparable capability, for less money if the capability is your deciding factor on the truck (I would suggest the diesel RAM 1500 which gets 30MPG for example, or several mid-sized trucks). If one must have an F150 and that is the deciding factor for your purchase, and wants better fuel economy, then this is clearly the winner. Awesome job by Ford regardless as this beats the pants off the prior attempt by Chevy.

Maybe it is wishful thinking, but maybe it will convince RAM to sell the RAM 700 and 1000 in the US, or make a Durango-based competitor to the Ridgeline (the towing capacity would be epic). This was an excellent walk-through of the new F150. I just purchased a 2021 GMC Sierra Denali CarbonPro a few weeks ago. The price was too good to pass up (~$13K off MSRP). But the Ford's implementation of the 12" display and the dials around it is very nice. The Hybrid with the 7.2kW option (only $750) is going to be super popular with folks who tow travel trailers. Makes me Jealous. Who knows, later in the year if some good incentives happen (once supply is not an issue) maybe I'll trade in the Denali and switch to Ford. Even though I love the GMC Denali body style

Alex on Autos: I would like to start by thanking you for this honest and thorough review of this truck. I have been interested in seeing how the hybrid F150 turned out. I trust your reviews so much that I literally never buy a vehicle without checking your review of it first. With that said, I have to comment on something based on what was explained in this review that bothers me in general. As pointed out, this F150 (along with non-hybrid F150s) can be bought in configurations that tow as little as 5000lbs. The payload capacity can be optioned to as little as 1300lbs. Assuming that the hybrid's lowest towing/payload capacity is like the standard F150, this would be in the shortbed (5.5 foot), RWD-only models (per axle advisor's towing database). So with that assumption, why would one buy a full-sized truck that only tows 5000lbs, only gets 24mpg highway, and only carries 1300lbs in the bed when literally every mid-sized truck can match or best that performance? Moreover, I doubt there would be anyone out there that would look at such a lowly equipped F150 and say "that's not a truck". Yet the AWD (which would be better than RWD-only in adverse conditions), smoother riding (4 wheel independent suspension), 5000lb towing, 1580lb payload, 28mpg highway Honda Ridgeline is "not a truck". It literally matches or beats those F150 configurations. Yes, I recognize that an F150 or other full-sized truck can be optioned to vastly outperform the Ridgeline and other mid-sized trucks, nobody has ever argued that, but the point is that some people buy the lower optioned F150s/full-sized trucks because they do not need the towing capacity and don't go off-roading. So if you don't need the towing or off-road capacity and go to the length to option a full-sized truck as such (and yes you have to go out of your way, most dealers don't carry those on their lots), why on earth would you do this when any mid-sized truck will give you similar capability for less money and more efficiently, including the much maligned Honda? I mean even the Honda can be purchased with bed outlets to power things (granted no truck can do what this hybrid does in that regard, that is incredible!).
@slscamg
@slscamg 3 жыл бұрын
Most people could buy the Honda ridgeline but trucks have become lifestyle vehicles and status symbols. When the neighbor comes home with a brand new XLT trim level you have to go to the Ford dealer and buy a king Ranch just to one up him.
@jg8263
@jg8263 3 жыл бұрын
@@slscamg So true, everyone must have their bro-dozer. I live in Northern Wisconsin (and formerly lived in Houghton, MI which averages 200+ inches of snow annually), where AWD and 4x4 are pretty much a necessity, so I don't begrudge anybody a truck when they need a truck. As you stated very well, they have become status symbols. When I see someone driving a lifted, smoke stacked, diesel 3/4 or 1 ton, with huge chrome rims with low-profile tires, pulling their single UTV or John Deere lawn tractor, it is painfully obvious which part of the anatomy did the thinking. Now, if one is a rock crawling, mud bogging, off-road fanatic, definitely buy a Wrangler or Tacoma. If you are towing a large camper/equipment, buy an appropriately capable truck. I guess you and I are the logical ones as opposed to those keeping up with the Jones's.

In general payload gets severely overlooked in F150's. This truck with the sunroof and couple of more options and this truck is actually close to a 1200 pound payload truck. Remember payload includes the passengers and the trailer. A 1200 pound payload truck essentially is a car as it doesn't have usable payload for things like hauling. The guy that owns the 77K f150 hybrid has a wake boat with a 500 pound tongue weight. He cant take his family of 4 to the lake with him with his boat in tow.... Yet everyone remembers that 14K tow rating. Many of the mid sized trucks in fact do have more usable payload and setup. Ford knows this, thats why it is difficult to found out what the payload on a truck is unless you look at the door sticker. Some of the other manufactures have online tools to determine payload but all you ever see from Ford is the marketing numbers. Ask a dealership salesmen, the will likely give you that 3k+ number as they are mostly un-educated.

@jg8263
@jg8263 3 жыл бұрын
@@mattnewsom8048 To get really technical, the American truck manufacturers do not publish their SAE J2807 ratings, which are the official towing capacities. They publish their own test data because they typically test work truck packages with option deletes such as no bed liner, no spare tire, rear seat removed, no center console, front bench (manual adjust), manual windows, even no bumpers, etc in order to publish the highest number possible. This is not realistic. For comparison, the J2807 test requires a vehicle with standard equipment. They are tested with 300lbs passenger weight, 100lbs additional equipment, and the lowest axle ratio available, etc for all vehicles. Tests performed include: Launching on a 12% grade 5 times in 5 minutes with the trailer, both forwards and in reverse. Must be able to reach 30mph in 12 seconds or less with trailer. Must be able to reach 60mph in 35 seconds with trailer. They also run an 11 mile long grade in Arizona that is 5% when the outside temp is a minimum of 100 degrees and do so with no trans coolers and with AC turned on max. There are a battery of other grade tests as well, but the point is, the SAE J2807 rating is the largest trailer that the vehicle could pull and perform all tests with no coolant loss, no warning lights, no error codes, etc. So looking at these extreme conditions (look up this test, there are other components even more extreme, including driving up a mountain with trailer at a constant speed, stopping tests, so on and so forth), you can be confident the vehicle can perform the rated towing in almost any circumstances, and in better conditions likely exceed. To date, there is only one truck manufacturer that advertises its J2807 rating, Honda for the Ridgeline, 5000lbs. So the Honda can likely pull just as much as other mid-size trucks if it used the same false tow tricks, but when you get 5000lbs behind a Ridgeline, especially the ones with the optional transmission cooler, you can be damn certain it will haul that 5000lbs to hell and back. Probably why the TFL guys were so surprised by its Ike Gauntlet performance, because the Ike is not even half as hard as what that truck did to achieve its "max" tow rating.

I do agree with Alex about the fact that a PHEV version of Ford F-150 would be more useful as towing machine in mountainous areas versus a simple HEV featured in this video. The price of the truck in the video is similar to Lincoln Aviator PHEV; the luxury features are top notch as well. That is a particularly compelling information due to the fact that very Lincoln has already a more powerful hybrid system with a larger battery able to be tweaked into a half ton truck with ease. In addition, Ford could adjust software in existing Lincoln powertrain and install a larger high voltage battery with some thermomanagement system to avoid premature degradation of a such battery used in a working truck. I believe a recipe like one employed in Lincoln will be used by Ford to maintain its lead in this hot pickup truck marketplace.

It must be your elevation/location to only get 24 mpg. I have watched a couple other 60-70 mile highway loops where they get 29.8 mpg going 55 and 70 mph. Ford's trip computer was inaccurate with the MPG, as the old hand calc method yielded those results.

Mmmm "baconing.." I do like the power inverter, but really can't bring myself to the hybrid. If you're not towing, then go with the Ecoboost 3.5. If you need to tow, go with the V8. Lariat, 3.5 FX4 was my choice in 2016. Probably in need of an upgrade soon. Thanks Alex!

Ford estimates 35 hours of continuous use at 7.2kw/h. A year late, but better than never! And that's at max power continuously

Alex forgot to mention the Powerboost (hybrid) model is the only F150 which had its GVWR increased by 300#. That means the truck itself is a bit heavier, apples compared with apples, and so not quite as 'jiggly' when the bed is empty. Alex (reasonably) said he preferred a larger hybrid battery (e.g. 4KW). So would we all...but which part of the bed or cabin would he want to surrender to that larger unit? There's an amazing number of 'pieces' in this new Powerboost F150.

The weight increase to 4kWh would be minimal, about 50 pounds. This is less additive weight than a ton of options like the power tailgate and man-step combo.,
@jacktyler7599
@jacktyler7599 3 жыл бұрын
@@AAutoBuyersGuide Agreed but you missed the point. The Powerboost has a bit less 'jiggly ride' with an empty bed (see comment further down) because it is - apples to apples - about 470# heavier than a comparable 3.5L drivetrain, according to Ford's spec sheets. That's a meaningful difference in weight, like adding a quarter ton of something in the bed.
@AAutoBuyersGuide
@AAutoBuyersGuide 3 жыл бұрын
@@jacktyler7599 The system doesn't have as much of an effect as you think because most of the added weight is in the front. The additional coolant loops are all before the front axle, the motor and transmission modifications are all more or less above the front axle. Just the battery is in the rear, in front of the rear axle, and it's really not terribly large.

Alex, thanks for the review. Nice truck. What is your opinion, thoughts, on the aluminum body parts???

I am very torn. The "average" owner will likely benefit from the resulting lower curb weight, higher towing and payload, and higher fuel economy. However, some users that are "hard" on their truck's bed may do better with a steel bed.

@@AAutoBuyersGuide I'm very hard on my 2017 F-150, and I bought it used from a precious life working for a concrete contractor. It has some very small dents in the wheel wells but no cuts, cracks, or large dents after 105,000 miles. I was hesitant to get an aluminum truck initially but it's been very good with just a generic cheap spray in bedliner.

I really hope that when fully electrified it doesn’t use less than 150kw packs as using the 90kw from the significantly smaller Mach-e would be a mistake for a vehicle this big or its uses

Love your reviews, but the wow factor for a hybrid is meh, with 24 MPG. My 2014 5.0l SuperCrew F150 gets 22 mpg on the highway now and it is insanely reliable for a steel bodied truck. I know that is apples to bananas, but still 24 isn't a draw for me, and the rest is meh, as well.

I think they key here is utility from the power in the bed of the truck and city mpg. A lot of people use their trucks in the city where a hybrid will do better. At the end of the day it doesn’t matter what engine you have, you are still driving around 6000 pounds the vehicle that is a square. It’s just going to use a lot of fuel.
