By the time of the one child policy, there were about 200 direct line male descendants of the original Mr. Chen in Shanghai alone with about another 100 in Beijing and Nanking both. The numbers in Hong Kong, Macau and Shanghai are a bit more difficult to estimate due to anglicization of the name, though most can be expected to revert back to Chen by the time of this story.
