Untamed, by Glennon Doyle is one of the most popular books of the past year. Many women are buying into the idea that they need to realize their inner "Cheetah," find their "Knowing," and put themselves first. But are these ideas biblical? In today's podcast I analyze the worldview of the book, Untamed, and offer a more biblical way forward for women who feel "tamed" by their life situations.

Someone at a bible study I went to told me about her first book “carry on warrior”. I bought it because she said it was the best book she ever read.. I read the intro to the book and The author said “If God is a He or SHE “ I put the book down so fast and was so convicted by the Holy Spirit and I put it in the trash... I was a newer Christian and knew that was wrong! Also anything tied to Oprah is new age...

The book is insight into the same desires that cause Eve to eat the fruit in the first place. Eve wanted to be like God, to know the good and evil and make her own decisions. This book teaches how to do that and make it seem like a good thing. It praises the human nature to worship ourself. It’s unfortunate. Great video :)

Glennon’s deceived perception of why Eve ate the fruit is exemplified in the view she has of herself! She thinks she knows better than God; that she has the moral high ground! The problem, as you stated Alisa, is that when we think we *know* something, and it doesn’t line up with God’s Word, that *knowing* boils down to a fleeting fit of self-delusion that feels momentarily like power and authority. Excellent review of Untamed. Thank you!

Alisa, I so appreciate how very fair and kind you are when dissecting the beliefs and messages of those preaching "another gospel". I'm not sure how you keep such a spirit of grace about you, but I admire it. In regards to this idea that there is no right or wrong or should or shouldn't Doyle puts forth...does that mean slavery, racism, human trafficking, robbery, torture, police brutality, and rape are ok? If there is no sin, then those things aren't wrong. Who are we to judge and condemn the people who do those things? Maybe they've found their happy place in those activities. Maybe that is their true selves. Who are we to take that away from them? (I hope you can hear my sarcasm.) Logically it makes no sense. Truly, truly, truly, the devil has blinded the eyes of unbelievers.

Sadly, as a former new-ager, I can testify that most of the people I interacted with in that realm had a genuinely bad (or unsatisfying to the flesh) experience with "religion" or "religious people" (often Catholicism). Doyle's message is another version of the basic message I heard taught by demons who spoke through mediums. Of course they didn't identify themselves as such... I figured that out after I repented of all that involvement. Alisa is correct... definitions of key Christian words/concepts are redefined in this sort of Spiritual attack. And the foundational lie that all of it teeters upon is, "You're misinformed about the I AM. Let me explain..."

You’re spot on with the point about unrealized ambition/curiosity. I love Glennon. I started following her before everything came out with her divorce/Abby. I was at the Belong tour in 2016 right before it all came out and she was a surprise guest and I remember having an uneasy gut feeling about her and kept thinking “she’s self-indulgent”. It’s hard for me to hear her saying these things now because she is so compelling. But the idea that we just need to explore every desire and urge we are curious about is just a path to destruction. I follow a true crime channel and one of the common themes with serial killers is that they feel this overwhelming curiosity/urge/even beauty about killing and dismembering people. That’s an extreme example but seriously not all urges and desires should be followed...it’s a path to destruction. That’s not something we can base our worldview on at all.

I’m so encouraged by you, Alisa. Thanks for doing the labor of breaking down these ideas and holding them to the standard of truth. As believers we are not talking about these ideas in order to amplify our own interpretations of the Bible but to hopefully correct and save people from being deceived by the false ones. It breaks my heart seeing more people fall into these ideas because it blinds them from the beautiful truths of word that God has provided for us. Taking the time to explain it all to someone is tiresome and not easy to do. But if it can help just one person from falling into these derailing ideas that put us in more bondage, then glory be to God. Thank you for doing the hard things Alisa. Sharing truth is labor. As someone who has experienced being ridden off time and time again with family members, I can see why some women might really gravitate towards this book and fall into this deceptive thinking. It sounds like this book really appeals to the vulnerabilities, temptations and struggles we have as women trying to navigate a broken and sinful world. Growing up and to this day, I've had family members try and almost force their preferences for likes and dislikes onto me, expecting that I need to share the same interests as them. My mom and others are examples of this but they expect me to act as they do and if I don't have the same interests as them, I am silenced or ignored. It is deeply hurtful when people close to you ride you off and dismiss you. I've had well meaning family members who don't want to hear from me on certain home remodeling projects I was part of because I am not a man and therefore, must not have anything worth mentioning. Its heartbreaking, because I think so many have gone through spiritual abuse or been dismissed for their struggles, that the pendulum ends up swinging in the complete opposite direction. I have family members on both opposites sides of the spectrum which is interesting lol. There are those who are now fully into feminism and those who unknowingly think the man is always right. I fall right in the middle which is how I believe the Bible teaches. I believe in submitting to my husband and serving family, while also having my own voice. I hope women stay far away from this book and thank you Alisa, for bringing these things to light. Its heartbreaking the deception that is out there

Thank you, Alisa for being a smart woman in Christianity. I am coming out of hypercharismatic Christianity where I was taught that we are to check our brains at the door and live out of our spirit. What’s postmodernism? I can never get it.
@pinballpsycho
@pinballpsycho 3 жыл бұрын
@@daniellewardd Hi. Postmodernism was borne out of the ashes of Marxism, after it became clear that the predictions of Marx all failed and a worker's rebellion would never take place, given the birth of the middle class. Marxists became depressed and developed a philosophy to counter the so-called modernist revolution, which had given rise to the enlightenment and in turn advances in mathematics, classical liberalism, science, medicine and the rights and responsibilities of the individual. But rather than admit that Marxism failed, the post modernists settled on the notion that there is no such thing as truth, and that all truth is subjective. The Neo-Marxists borrowed some of these ideas in creating their new version of Marxism that is based on culture rather that economic class, particularly where you see narratives that insist every single event is a manifestation of oppressor and oppressed classes in a never ending grind of power dynamics. It's why we are having cultural struggles of every conceivable kind today. It's part of a grand political movement that has worked it's way into the structures of government and seeks to overturn them. It has also worked it's way into the church - and Doyle's assertions leverage some of it's tenets. If you want to learn more, the following clip is an non-religious, academic overview (though somewhat long, it explains how we got from the enlightenment to where we are now). kzbin.info/www/bejne/Y3Oqk3t9a5irbtk

I just want to add. My life is a living testament to what happens when you abandon logic and live through emotion (heart and feeling). It was only when I accepted Christ as the only way to real freedom from the depravity living that way resulted in. The Bible speaks a lot about wisdom and understanding, it doesn’t come when we rely on our hearts to dictate our reality. I am grateful for the incredible testimony that God has blessed me with but I certainly would not wish it on anyone.

Whereas Love Warrior was written more like a memoir of a very messy life, Untamed is a how-to-do life which feels very very wrong and completely inauthentic. For someone who encourages independence, she has spent VERY little, if any, time alone. She went from her relationship with her husband, straight to another codependent relationship with Abby. If you observe her relationship with Abby online - Doyle regresses into a little girl within their interactions. It’s strange. I’m not sure what makes her think she is able to advise any woman, anywhere. The book is a lesson in being self-centred.

That’s funny. I was reading this book as I opened my eyes to what being a Christian meant and became reborn. The way I read it in the beginning resonated with me but after (about halfway) it seemed very sinful. Thanks for sharing and god bless you.

Thank you Alisa for your breakdown of this book. Forty years ago (I’m now 70) I would have consumed it with relish. I was very slow to grow in wisdom. I fell into one trap after another, even years after I accepted Jesus as my saviour. I have much still to learn, but I’ve learnt one thing - when an idea comes into my head, to check where it comes from. An Anglican priest nurtured me early in my faith. He taught us to always check the source of an idea - If it didn’t conform with biblical teaching and the Holy Spirit, to reject it. The path to heaven is narrow and few find it.

Great video. Thank you, Alisa. While I was listening, Soren Keirkagard came to mind. Here we have a man that is fulfilled and alive in his Christians faith. He is not a man of convention, but he is not rebellious. Christianity is so freeing and primal, if we truly understand freedom. Then if we look at Keirkegard’s protégées, like Neitzche or Sartre’, we have the same deconstructionism that you speak of. I haven’t read this book you’re reviewing, but it sounds like a repackaging of the New Age all over again. Again, thank you. God bless!

I work in a book store, one that has a large Christian Living section, and it's full of false teachers. Being a Christian, it's hard for me to watch people buy these books. I try to recommend books that I know are good, but I can't reach everyone. Its frustrating.

Thank you so so much for your ministry! I really appreciate your reviews and how you consistently expose the world's lies & half truths by bringing it back to the Bible! I attended a Christian college...but I have seen so many of my peers and even professors fall into the half-truths of progressive thought and dismiss the full Truth of Jesus. Jesus says "No one can serve two masters. Either you will hate the one and love the other, or you will be devoted to the one and despise the other. You cannot serve both God and money." Matthew 6:24. So often today it feels like money gets replaced by culture or political party or some form of platform for social justice, etc. It breaks my heart. Thank you again for standing up and preaching Truth, I always leave feeling renewed and refreshed and appreciate all of your references to scripture.

The description of the ‘Knowing’ during meditation is precisely what more conservative Christians also ascribe to when they follow Spiritual Formation teachings (Dallas Willard, Richard Foster, Henri Noewen, Ruth Haley Barton, John Ortberg, Brennan Manning etc). Lord help them see the truth 🙏 and leave this self-worship.

@@sonjaszaukellis6119 check out Lighthouse Trails Research. Their outreach was founded upon their concern about how contemplative mysticism was infiltrating the church (and now, most Christian colleges and seminaries!). FYI, the techniques practiced in so-called "contemplative prayer" are identical to those employed by mediums to initiate contact with the spirit realm. Former New Ager here. 🙏

Glad I found your channel! Now I know what I am dealing with. I was like what is happening to the church these days. Progressive Christianity. I had listened to Rachel Held Evans a while back and I didn't know what type of Christian she was. Some things are so subtle at times. Anyway, this was an interesting video. Thank you.

I’m a little late to this particular party. But this information is SO IMPORTANT. We are seeing more and more public figures who built their platform on a Christian fan base go this direction, and we need knowledge of the Scripture and discernment.

"For God doth know that in the day ye eat thereof, then your eyes shall be opened, and ye shall be as gods, knowing good and evil", ...and ye shall be woke... Glennon if she wants to believe what she believes in untamed, following her feelings, etc....can have no longer any part in calling herself a Christian. She’s only using the Word Christian as a label to spread her false doctrines. Meanwhile she refuses to part with the Word, but rejects any place that has come from. You cannot redefine Christ or Christianity. Nor does she have or take any part presently in historical Christianity. As she has clearly and overtly stated and defined that Christianity is hijacked, which means she clings to another Gospel other than the one Jesus Christ preached. Let’s not forget also, that Jesus corrected people who were living in sin, and going to Hell...so to her He must not know how to love at all. That’s heresy according to how she’s redefining good, and bad, etc, yet answering questions in a shade of black and white that doesn’t exist either? Fallacies abound here, but at the heart is idolatry.

Christianity is being systematically redefined and subverted from within the church. It's part of the "falling away" from Truth, the apostasy which characterizes the time we're living in.
