Thank you for watching this episode of 101 East, which is the first part of an investigation into the 'zouxian' phenomenon, where record numbers of Chinese nationals are taking a dangerous route through Latin America to seek asylum in the US. In the next episode, we explore what happens to Chinese asylum seekers once they reach America and investigate the shadowy industries profiting off them: kzbin.info/www/bejne/pmKuYqiLgsRor68

The reason is that they can make a lot more in Australia. Plus the competition is much less. A master's can get you a pretty high paying job. To get the equivalent you would need a PhD. They plan to make money 💰 over seas and then return , where the living costs are much lower.

Most of these Chinese migrants would claim political persecution as the reason for leaving China. However, if you ask them about their view on Taiwan independence, the majority will fiercely argue against it. In their point of view, it is absolutely righteous for themselves to enter the US illegally to pursue their freedom, but it is sinful for the Taiwanese population wanting to live freely outside the ruling of Beijing dictatorship.

They will struggle especially if they don't speak English and I'm sure they know that so the fact that they're willing to endure tells you how bad it is for them in China. I think they would have a better understanding than say you, especially when over 600 million still live on $138 dollars a month, high youth unemployment, FDI flowing out, stagnating economy, repressive government, lack of freedom. I think they've calculated their risks.

I met some of these people in Thailand after COVID. There was a small group of Chinese who kept to themselves at our hostel. One day I overheard them in Chinese repeatedly talking about my country Mexico which got me to talk with them. They were quite happy to learn I could speak Chinese but more excited to learn I was from Mexico. They started asking me a bunch of questions about crossing the border into the US to which I bluntly told them I had no idea about and discouraged it. I asked where they got these crazy ideas from and they said that people were posting videos and tutorials of how to cross into the US online. The Chinese government hard handed approach to COVID was what made them leave. They wanted to go both for the freedom and economic benefits but they had a very naive and overly optimistic view of the US. They saw the high wages US workers were making but had no idea as to the incredibly high living costs associated with living there. I tried explaining that there was a housing shortage and that their expectations for life in the US would set them for disappointment but they either didn't believe me or brushed off my criticism. I also tried encouraging them to go to German or Australia instead (places which I feel would be better and easier for them to enter) but they seemed dead set on just going to the US. Unfortunately I don't know where they are now as Wechat is blindly and constantly blocking and deleting accounts in SE Asia without reason🙄.

The federal minimum wage is $7.25. If they manage to make $20 an hour as a fast food worker in California they would end up spending all of that due to high cost of living. After tax they're really only getting paid around 15$ per hour and that's about $2.2k per month. With rent going for around 2k for a small apartment that leave them with about $200 to live on each month. It sounded good until you factor in the expenses and you realized you're living just to work.

My parents and forefathers were once have a chance to migrate to USA because our country was once their territory but they did Not. They chose to become Independent and rule their own land. I would say semi because USA really never left. The one odd about our generation we have to go through the same process like everyone else. While USA citizens are free visa to come to our islands, we are not. Many Chinese immigrants also came to us by boats but that was when they were persecuted during the early 1900's and the Mao time. Same with the Vietnam time. Whatever the reason, they are uncontrolled. These immigrants have no respect at all at your immigration laws. If you want to end up like us in South China Sea go ahead.

Although I’ve been approved and paid thousand in fees to USA gov … I still have yet to receive my paperwork or green card. Years. But these people have special privileges I don’t understand. It’s like the process honours only the illegal immigrants but can’t be bothered with those of us who did things the right and legal way. Frustrating to see all that is going on over there while I’m still unable to join my family.

I have no sympathy for illegal immigrants. These people applied for their visas and were turned away for a reason. Instead of working to improve their chances by re-applying and proving their cases to immigration services, they decided to go the route with less waiting. Everyday thousands are waiting legally to join their spouses and families, but everyday that the US immigration system is flooded with illegal asylum visa applications, means more delays for those waiting to enter legally and have done their bit legally. I have no sympathy.

I don't think a good chunk of Americans like Asian people in-general, even if they're American or even a 20 year US veteran, like there was this ~20+ years of service US American Asian veteran as example, and if I remember right people tell him in his face like, "go back to your country," calling him slurs, giving him real dirty looks and whatnot, so when these Chinese ppl straight from China speak little to no English, don't understand much English, speak with a heavy accent, etc., they may get it bad in certain parts of America When the C virus was at its peak, there were plenty of people across the nation intentionally robbing, home invasion, punching Asian people, knocking them out and whatnot, a lot of h 8 against them I think Asians are probably the most discriminated people in America by all other Americans alongside Hispanics and Blacks
