I been using a Drexel for two years. Never even know there were better flex shafts. I didn't know Drexel had a flex shaft until 2 years ago and I ran out and got one. I been saving my $ for a Foredom SR this last few months. To me it will be worth it because of the hand piece that do other things. The Drexel has saved me time but not a lot of time. I hate the little wrench that I have to use to loosen and tighten the bits. I set it down and I lose it. I finally bought a bunch. Now I have them all over my house and it's frustrating. I have OCD and it drives Mr crazy when things are not in their place. Thank you Andrew for the indispensable advise. I love your channel here on YT.

Yes this is a piece of equipment i see at some jewelry places looking in. Now i understand what it is. I been trying to use a dremel tool which is good for somethings but for very fine things the model i have is nothing like these pendent motors your show. And the interchangeable tools and heads of them look like you can do everything from polishing to drilling to maybe even cutting some stones.

It would be worth mentioning the large amount of Chinese/Indian fake replicas there are now available, especially the Foredom ones which are so much cheaper, even being sold on Amazon. They look the same externally, but the all important internal components certainly are not the same. Buyer beware..

Arrisina van der Plas I have and so far it works fine for me. I have no way of comparing it to a more professional flex shaft but for me as an amateur jewelry maker the Dremel is absolutely fine.
@nathalieschumann8499
@nathalieschumann8499 4 жыл бұрын
Arrisina van der Plas I use it mainly for cleaning or polishing or for structuring surfaces. I think the main advantage of a professional Flex Shaft is that the motor is more powerful. Especially when you handle larger quantities. As I handle only amateur quantities, my Dremel does the job ok.

Excellent video Andrew, very informative and very detailed as always. I would just like to add that the US Style Flag/Key Shaft that you showed, which works well on bench vise drilling mechanism, has a key to lock the drill bits on it, so its a bit slower to attach a new drill bit on that shaft as compared to other ones that you showed. I have a Freedom Pendent Motor that I got from my dad, and he bought that motor in the early 90s, and its still working flawlessly, although the foot pedal accelerator has become less accurate over time, so I probably need to get that repaired or buy a new one.

Andrew. . .l finally bought a Foredom SR Flexible Shaft after 50 years of licking my lips. I bought the hand piece with the quick change lever. All of my burrs, mops, brushes etc. have .125" - 1/8" shafts. The SR quick change hand piece takes 3/32" shafts. I thought. . .well l need a 1/8" collet. but Foredom dosen't have them. What do I do?. . .drill the 3/32" collet to 1/8"? I shouldn't have to work on a tool right out of the box. In fact, one of the Foredom burrs that came with the package was milled down to 3/32" from the upper 1/8" shaft. I have never felt such a fool for assuming the best used the world wide accepted 1/8" shaft size. Please warn your followers of this asinine aspect of the tool. Why in the world would Foredom drop the shaft 1/32"? Any ideas? Do you know of a way to exchange the collet to an 1/8" size. Honestly, I could kick myself in the pratt for not buying the Chinese knock-off. It would outlive me. Love your site. P.S. If you know of an answer to my conundrum, please message me. Have you ever used Niello as an inlay metal? I know it contains lead, but for untouchable pieces it look grand. Found this in Oppi's classic textbook in 1970. Can any other metal be used you know of? I'm been researching these for the past few days. The advantage of the H.30 chuck style handpiece with the Foredom is that is allows you to use different size bits as it goes from 0-4mm. I have an old dremmel tool that uses 1/8" (3.2mm) & 3/32 (2.4mm) and with the H.30 chuck style handpiece I can use my old dremel bits. The quick change style the Foredom H.20 limits you to only using the smaller sized bits so you have to buy all your bits in that one size.

Quick release handpiece is good and the other requirement is good smooth cutting at low speeds, with gradual smooth cutting with burrs as you increase the speed-essential for stone setting. Are all pendant type drills controlled via a foot pedal? Not too chunky a handpiece is probably a good thing to have.

Hi all, can you please advise on flex shafts motors brands that are reliable ? I leave in Greece and we don't have many foredom motors here. Also if you know any good online sellers in Europe that ship the product I will really appreciate it, thank you!

As I have looked at the Foredom Flex Shaft units, I see it is available with a 4mm or 6mm shaft. For doing fine work in jewelry making, which would you recommend?

They are the same model. The red label is the 240v version. The blue label is the 110v version
