Or just attack from the south* with the archers where they can shoot from 2 tiles away. You can early take cities with 3-4 archers and a few warriors.

The timing was fine tbh. They touched on it in the video, the biggest problem is Rythian doesn't know the line of sight mechanics. He doesn't know which tiles his archers can shoot from, and just rushed them into melee range to die for nothing.

​@@bingo5387 Climb that iron hill over the jungle perhaps? At least then 1 unit could hit the city besides those adjacent to the capital. I would have tried for an early caravan and buy one of the tiles to get a road on a jungle- or at least chop down a forest but I guess you can't get away with that with real-players.

Props to Rythian for trying a war, but boy did he botch it. Far too early into horrible terrain. A slightly later push with Sexmen+catapults might've worked better. Hope he keeps his head up and comes back swinging!

Things to learn from this, Rythian: -If you have special units, see if it's applicable to wait for that instead and do your usual science route and then swap to war mode when you get there. -Take note of terrain, you can't shoot THROUGH rough terrain (Hill, jungle, forest ect) to reach the tile behind it, you must be next to it if you are on a flat tile. (Stand on a hill to counter this) -If you plan on attacking someone, might be worth to fake them out and ask for a road between your nations, as that will greatly help you sending in reinforcements if you outnumber them. (Can be dangerous if you misjudge their numbers and then THEY have a road to your city. Could bring a single worker to destroy roads or pillage with a unit to stop it, or just send it from a city with defenses/not your capital) -Ranged units are great early but only to the point of murdering other units rather than cities, as you noticed. -It's pretty rough to take a city with so few units, especially if you can only shoot at it with ranged units that are next to it (from the hills/forested tiles) so maybe it's best to wait for a siege unit. I disliked your gameplay but this has earned my respect as you are clearly trying to learn other ways of civ rather than just turtle and I can appreciate that and I think it needs to be encouraged so that's why I made this list to try and help out. Good effort and I am excited to see you in the next game!!

Also -Don't conga line a single unit at a time towards your enemy city. You need to overwhelm your opponents city.

@RokuroCarisu sjin was everyone's enemy during civ games, not just rythian. Rythian consistently sabotages himself, usually by making wierd decisions. He's still funny and I enjoy him participating, of course. He's just not very good.

@john98765333 him and Duncan both were complaining about the terrain, the one thing that can make combat more interesting, if you just understand how to take advantage of it. Duncan, apparently unintentionally, did just that. He had a very strong defensive position.

The way they talk about it, it's clear he just doesn't respect the combat mechanics enough to learn it. They always say the combat, especially "land war" is bad and frustrating. But of course it's going to feel that way if you don't learn the line of sight, terrain, and positioning mechanics. The combat is very engaging if you have a plan of attack beyond just run units in and attack. They praised the naval war for being interesting because it doesn't have terrain, but naval war is just units with way too much movement rushing in from a screen away from fog of war. Simple sure, but far from interesting or balanced. I just feel like they would have a much better experience if they got out of the mindset of "the combat is bad and I don't want to deal with it" which leads them to never actually learn the combat.

I was really rooting for Rythian to win the early war. It was a good idea, and the timing was good, but that was not the best showing of tactics. Probably the worst even, although I won't give him too much shit given he's very inexperienced with war. Like how he doesn't do terrain analysis to see that attacking from the East would gives his Archers clear Line of Fire to Duncans City and how he send his Warriors to their death by directly attacking the city, which is really only an acceptable trade if you have overwhelming military strength/numbers. What's important is that he is trying, and can learn from this mistake the next time he goes to War. Now this IS the Yogs we're talking about, so we shouldn't have our expectation high to begin with, but it'll be dammed satisfying when, if ever, we see Rythian wins a war of his own doing. He learned to not get bullied by Barbs, he can surely learn to conduct wars, one can hope.

In the first generation of pokémon it was technically possible to influence the capture rate. this required frame perfect timing and was almost impossible for a human to do. Any game after the first ones it does nothing.

Daltos and Kirsty both won the position lottery by being on the top and bottom of the mess that is this squished up world. Daltos has used it to settle several cities and build up his empire. Kirsty has.... rushed out a settler way too early while on two pop and then rushed the great library instead of growing her capitol. While I am glad she was wise enough to go tradition instead of honor considering her play style her game is just so much early wasted potential. Meanwhile.... if Rythian had waited like ten turns and settled two cities Duncan would have chopped all those trees down and he could have had a much easier time attacking. I doubt the two will ever recover from this early war and it greatly benefits Lewis who gets to settle unmolested the left side of the map.

On top of this, Kirsty's second city was settled in a position that was so low priority because it was guaranteed hers. If she had decided to settle a more contested location early, Malcolm II was still always going to be her city. There's space to the south and west that would have been better to early settle for her.

So i do not know what map they are playing but I noticed with the Hellblazers map script(presumably at play here) that setting the size to tiny actually does nothing. It only cares about its X and Y size in the subsettings. However, if I try to move those from the default, the game just doesnt load. And based on how much room they all have with so many players, I am not convinced that this is a tiny map, just a messy spawn.

@@jonathanpilcher337 I tested a lot of spawns when fiddling and it can happen surprisingly often. The further you stray from the standard setup, the more often(for example trying to set up a tiny game) In my current game, 4 of us spawned on the continent, but one of them could not settle. Even though there was plenty of room, if only the AI spawned in the big empty place.

Tank Controls means 'left' turns the character to their left, rather than pushing them towards the left of the screen. ResE does it, as does Grim Fandango. GTA:V does not, hence the character sometimes running in circles to turn around when you push in one direction.

Can't expect that though when he didnt seem aware the trees would be such a problem for his archers before he declared.

Honestly, that early aggression wasn't bad, but your lack of experience shows. For instance taking your units south east out of the city would take them two tiles to get to the flat terrain there and blitz into combat without having two whole rounds of being shot by the city. Don't be discouraged! You don't war often because you don't like it, but you don't like it cause you don't understand it... because you don't do it, circular problem just snap the circle, do some surface research and just be aggressive for a handful of games knowing that you're probably throwing away your chance to win, but it'll teach you how to be good at that combat. Doesn't help you attacked Duncan who is, of the players in the game, one of the ones who gets ganged up on the most after Lewis meaning he's got a *lot* of experience with the combat comparatively, thus why he was able to cycle units constantly to keep them alive. It's the same reason Lewis can fight three fronts at once, he's had to learn. Regardless of what you do, I'm glad you got aggressive, made the whole game just that bit more kinetic and interesting!

man rythian gets on my nerves. In every CIV game he does nothing but complain. He never takes accountability for this own mistakes, wonders why he sucks at the game and doesnt strive to actually improve. From now on he will say see! i did war! it didn't work, so war sucks. Not going to do that again. mate you had a few units and no city seige units. The terrain advantages aren't bullshit, its called strategy. Strategy in a strategy game? what! who knew? I actually stopped watching this channel for ages because of rythian just complaining all the time. If he's not playing to win fine, just vibe and be apart of the fun. but complaining when something that does go you way it just such a downer. Rythian gives me the "we've tried nothing and were all out of ideas" mindset. (simpsons quote). Anyway i though id come back and try because i used enjoy the Yogs CIV games. Nowaways i don't, just not for me anymore.
