Took me 9 years to realize they’re not singing at each other but at each other’s wives and that’s why they have a feud and also why they seem more happy when they switch at the end (just realized the switch which brought everything together). That’s also why they tried to make the other guy’s life a living hell because in turn everytime their wives saw the other guy’s face it would “give them hell”. Damn I love rewatching music videos.

Still love this song after all these years. I left my toxic relationship of 17 years because he was so hateful and his daily goal was to make me cry...well I did, a lot. Finally, at his insisting I got a job on top of running our business and raising our two children to prove to him that I wasn't as worthless as tried to make me believe and I was able to see I really could make it on my own. That what I was taught was tough love was manipulation and abuse. I walked away with my kids and a trunk full of our clothes and never looked back. So grateful to wake up with a big smile on my face every morning and know it gives him hell.

In the story being told here, both men are the same person showing how he could have lived his life in 2 separate paths of life BUT, what I believe is overlooked is that this SONG is about the WOMAN - specifically the "prim and proper" woman, as SHE, is the focal point of the SONG. (I emphasis "song" bc the "video" is extending the story in the "song.") It seems to me that she (the prim and proper woman) left him because the "rock and roll" lifestyle was too hard and they were likely poor, so she left him and traded that life for a "9-5" man - more stable, predictable, and perhaps - boring. If you listen to the lyrics, he appears to be asking her "how's that 9-5 pace going for you?" - and meanwhile, it seems that he (the Rocker) has now found fame and possibly fortune - so the pace of a Rockstar life, but now famous and rich. So he's basically taunting her, yet at the same time he's still hurting/grieving the LOSS of her - as he clearly still loves her, but: he openly taunts her to the point that he says: when you see my face hope it gives you Hell (meaning, look at me now: famous, successful, rich - I want you to see what you threw away - and I hope it gives you Hell). Now The VIDEO extends the story of the song by spinning up a variant version of himself and his life. In one path of life, he quits the band, gets a job, and let's Corp America turn him into a pencil neck - but in the other path of life, he stays true to his dream of being a Rockstar and hits it big - so the video shows these two worlds or paths come right up along side of each other on a parallel path where they can see each other. The TWIST of the video is that BOTH versions of himself in both alternate life paths are PROUD of who they have become. The Rockstar is proud and so is the 9 to 5 version of himself!! As a result, they taunt each about how great they are, BUT - something is still NOT right??? This is the masterful part of how the writers pull the music vid and the song together; as I said, BOTH are proud, but something is still missing and they figure it out: It's the lost love - the WOMAN....so they switch - meaning they both get the love of their lives back - and it balances both scenarios; the Rocker gets the more conservative lost love and the 9-5 man gets his lost love back - the Rock & Roll girl. If you notice at the end, the 9-5 version of himself is ripping up the mic now and the Rocker version is jumping into bed to rev up the prim and proper lost love. Both versions of himself and both WOMEN have found peace in balance. This is a brilliant music video. It's funny, serious, reflective, deep, and shallow - I guess you could say it "found balance."

I've tried songwriting in the past, and really struggled. This VT shows me that the music video itself can add context and meaning to the story in the lyrics. Let the music sound cool. When just listening to it, it should sound good. When watching the video, the picture is just as important as the audio. This does that.
@randomuserd5365 жыл бұрын
I feel like in this video he's talking to the person he could have been. So the "rocker"-him makes fun of the boring but successful life and the "normal"-him scoffs at the wild and senseless life. I also feel like they both kinda dislike the image of the other life, but they are still interested in them. Yes, that's what I think. sonic555ify They realize they prefer each other's life styles, I think. Or at least the girls find something they like in the other guys.

... o.o i see it as indictive of no one is happy, and the bad boys always win. kinda a fucked up lesson to preach in the end the goodie wife 'sleeps' with the neighbor... HAPPILY i might add. not exactly a great moral to behold -__- the goodie husband goes blind to this and feels tall for a 'night' by being the singer to me the ending a trade of "my life for your wife" and excuse me for being different from you AAR lover's but i will never... NEVER... accept that as respectful outcome for any situation. before you flame, know that this is just my opinion of the ending. love the song itself.

It's not about wifes or relationships. They are the same person. At the end the preppy version embraces the rocker version and the rocker version embraces the preppy version. This is seen by life-swapping. It's not about sex, relationships or sexuality. It's self-acceptence. The two neighbors are the same person. This is very much like Fight Club in that way. The acceptance at the end is both sides of a person realizing they can do both and be proud regardless of what society wants to label them. This overall spoke to me as a kid who had many clicks of friends. Preppy, Emo, Punk, whoever was cool got to hang out with me but people in those circles wouldn't want to hang out with people in other circles. I was really the only one breaking down those walls.

I found this music when I was severely depressed. It’s the only thing that got me by. 6 months has passed. I’m in a new stage in my life, when I listen to this genre of music it takes me back to my depression. It makes me appreciate my wife for being there every step until I could get out of the depression. Some music is meant to heal.

You only listened to this 6 months ago? Or what do you mean?

@@BrookeKatherine. 6 months (now 8) since I got out of the depression. I found it years before.

Keep your head high and keep going. Im 8 months clean of multiple drug addictions after a toxic mentally abusive relationship of 5 years that caused me so much hurt. I can't say im 100% now but I'm on the right path and don't want anyone else slipping down the road to depression. Seek help and don't be ashamed by any of it. The first step to recovery is acceptance. Chin up big man!

Good on you for finding your healing. If the music does so much damage is it worth it though? Work on yourself and move past if that's even possible for you. I wish you the best of luck
