His knees are beat up and have gone through surgery. Saying Oly lifting is healthy for the knee joints is like saying boxing is perfectly healthy for the brain. You do what you do to minimize damage, your body can take quite a bit but eventually things will catch up on an elite level.

@searcher maybe if you have straight knees and ankles. I try atg but I get knee pain though I have very flat feet and pretty substabtial knee valgus. I've recently dropped weight to try and fix my form I'll see what I can do cause I prefer ATG squats.

Chris M You don't have to go ass to grass if you don't have the mobility for it. Just go as low as you can while maintaining a good and safe posture. Clarence mobility is very good, not everybody can get to those positions.

Yeah, the key really seems to be keeping your torso as rigid as possible. As long as your back doesn't round, you should be ok.

I watched a supposedly motivational squat video with pro bodybuilders. Omg squats suits wraps etc, shaking as they walk from the rack and spotters bear hugging them. His form, as you said, is impeccable. However, there's still many uninformed people who believe that ATG squats are harmful for your knees. This guy is an olympic weightlifter, not a crossfitter. But he's training at a crossfit box because that's a very good place to train the olympic lifts. Great quality plates, barbells, platforms, etc...
