Space odyssey is a signature Deodato experience. My late father and his friends were avid jazz fans; we were jazz fan children. We too love jazz. It speaks a unique love, family, home, peace, all-things-are-possible language. Thank you for this quality complication and upload. I treasure the family Deodato vinyl. Am right here as 2023 plays out.

A radio edit of this tune made it all the way to No. 2 on the Billboard Hot 100 in March 1973. It was an era where instrumentals (even those with classical origins) were appreciated not only by the record-buying public, but by disc jockeys, as well. Those days are long gone, friends.

On this date in 1973 {Feb. 3rd} "Also Sprach Zarathustra" entered Billboard's Top 100 chart; eventually it would peak at No. 2 {for 1 week}and spent a total of 12 weeks in the Top 100...

July 1975. My grandfather's (RIP) house. Sansui QS quadraphonic (1st in town). Green LP quadradisc of an unknown author at that time for me (15 yrs old). Grandad has heard it 6 months ago in Atlanta and had struggled in getting one for him. Saturday afternoon. Since then, amazed and delighted with Deodato. And about this piece, well, never tired of hearing it. And yes, I wet my pants that afternoon.

Real music. I love listening to this CRANKED! The theme gives me goosebumps. Too many kids today can't understand music that isn't generated by some computer program instead of a human brain. If it doesn't sound like every other song they listen to it isn't worth listening to. Music should make you SOAR.

Thanks for reminding us! I remember so clearly standing in line in Miami to see 2001 back in early '68. It was such a pivotal movie - the music, the story. Happened onto this site while cataloging a long time collection of LPs to sell. Was a treat to be reminded of Deodato and Also Sprach Zarathustra!

On this day in 1968 {April 2nd} the Stanley Kubrick's science-fiction movie "2001: A Space Odyssey" had its world premier in Washington, DC The following day it opened in NYC and the day after in LA And not surprisingly it won an Academy Award for 'Best Effects, Special Visual Effects'... Five years later the theme music "Also Sprach Zarathustra - 2001" by Deodato entered the Top 100 on February 3rd, 1973 and eventually peaked at #2 {for 1 week}... R.I.P. Stanley Kubrick {1928 - 1999}...

It took me a while to tune my ears to LATIN RYTHMS.I listened to a LOT.SANTANA, LOS LOBOS ,and stuff I cannot remember because I only had them on vinyl and wore them out. I like Deodato. He is creative .He takes a melody I am aware of( Baubles Bangles and Bells) and runs with it and makes it his own.....Wish I had my old Mongo Santamaria albums but here is the thing: I always have dug Latino Rythms.....I was just playing with your minds.....EL GATO.....Gato Barbeiri........

An interesting video juxtaposition of the use of this piece of music. I saw 2001 A Space Odyssey in 1968 more than once and this tone poem of Richard Strauss will to me be forever associated with that movie. As for Deodato's version of the piece, it is in and of itself a pretty decent piece of music. But it inevitably gets compared to the original, and again, to me, it falls vastly short. It helps that Deodato's version is using actual NASA footage, the footage selected is not so compelling.
