British public opinion was actually very divided on the Confederacy. Generally the upper class were more likely to have a favourable view of the South, while support for the South was a minority position for those in middle or lower classes. This can be seen in a study of papers of the time. Those aimed at the upper class, such as The Times, were generally pro-South, but those like the Morning Star and Daily News that were aimed at readers in middle and lower classes, were generally pro-Union. Britain was unlikely to enter the war because the loss of Canada was a practical certainty, and the cost far outweighed any benefits (UK could and did sell to both sides). Both UK and France had substantial stockpiles of cotton at the start of the war, which is why the cotton embargo the South instituted at the outbreak of war actually hurt the South diplomatically and financially rather than encouraging intervention by the European powers. UK also started to try and mitigate the impact by encouraging cotton growth in Egypt and India. It was not until the latter years of the war that cotton shortages started to bite, and by that stage most could see the writing on the wall for the South.

Here's a scenario for you. Suppose the British occupation of the Hawaiian Islands in 1843 hadn't been opposed by the US and France and it became part of the British Empire. What does an alternate WW2 look like if Hawaii (and probably Midway) are a British colony rather than United States territory?
@TheHistoricalLine Жыл бұрын
4 Years Late Sorry 😐 Britain declares war on the Japanese Empire (If they hadn’t already), but if the Japanese are trying to attack the US I guess they’d attack some other US Pacific Territory, well maybe they don’t get the territories out there cause of the civil war. i dunno. Maybe they attack a U.S. ship? If Britain went to war with Japan it would probably wouldn’t be fought much. They are just quite far apart. Probably from Hawaii and their other Pacific bases I can imagine a British-Japanese Naval Battle similar to the ones of the US and Japan in our timeline, and maybe Japan and the Us would engage in naval battle, perhaps though with large Us defeat, probably cause they’d have a smaller navy and overall military and be a bit poorer for decades after the American Civil War

Please correct me if I’m wrong, but the Golden circle never had a flag. Nor did Cody make one for this video. The flag depicted was one of the many flags the Confederate government officially adopted as the supposed nation’s official flag. The more famous saltine design was only officially adopted by Robert E. Lee’s army of northern Virginia, but never the pseudo nation as a whole. You just need to do a few simple things: 1)do not take part in WWII; 2)do not be Nazi Germany. That's all. And here's the same thing... The CSA can't lose if it's not CSA and not fighting with USA to begin with. Let go of the slavery(to get popular support in Europe), restructure your agriculture away from such hard cotton focus(to make up for lack of slaves and to produce food for yourself), something the South lacked ironically), become french and british puppet in dealing first with Mexico and then with dismantling spanish empire in central and south america by proxy. Industrial capacity is covered by your two patrons. Without suicidal attack on USA you'd have around two decades before they'd attack anyway. Enough to restructure and reform this shell of a country, finish conquering said countries, move capital and even build Nicaragua Canal. Still very much impossible, but answers the question of: what about Civil War?

Interestingly enough, 10K-20K members of the Confederacy actually did flee to South America - most specifically, Brazil - following their defeat by the Union. The colony formed by the Confederate refugees was called, not surprisingly, Americana. There's even an annual festival still held there called Festa Confederada (Confederate Party) held in Santa Barbara d'Oeste, commemorating the colony. So here's a AHH scenario - what if the Confederacy was actually resurrected with full force in South America starting in Brazil with help from the Portuguese? What if they actually staged an invasion to take back the Southern States from the Union - along with some Midwest Territories - starting with acquisition of certain territories in South and Central America, and even ports on several uninhabited Caribbean isles - with some negotiating over which parts the Portuguese would be given in exchange for their aid - before the 19th century came to an end, what would be the outcome, and would it really make that much of an impact on history as we know it?

Zero chance. Brazil had an exotic diplomatic behavior on the continent. Although it was far from being a power (in any sense), and even it was a vast slaveholding nation, the Brazilian diplomatic ideal was almost a replica of the British one in relation to Europe: splendid isolation. Brazil only interfered to prevent disorder and imbalance in South America (particularly frequent in Argentina and Uruguay). Although they were cousins, and himself an inveterate Francophile, Pedro II never officially recognized Maximilian's government in Mexico (preferring to wait for the outcome of the situation), and the Empire of Brazil never even considered possibility of recognizing the CSA (for the same reason). Brazil welcomed CSA refugees first on a humanitarian principle, and secondly, because of the "whitening" policy adopted at the time, in accordance with prevailing racial theories. Although a slaveholder state, Brazil never adopted policies of racial segregation characteristic of the Anglo-Saxon states, and never conditioned the franchise of civil rights based on race. There is no point in speaking in "Portuguese" in this situation. Brazil had been separated from Portugal for half a century, and increasingly distant from its former metropolis. Although nominally an empire, it has always lacked an expansionist and universalist ambition - even forfeiting numerous opportunities to do so, such as Angola, Togo, Dahomey, Paraguay and Charcas.

Then another war would happen, and eventually Mexico would loose, the country was so unstable to held such an army, however if somehow Mexico was able to organize itself and get decent weapons to fight back, the northern territories would still be full of Americans, so revolutions will still occur, and they would eventually become independent, leading to eventual annexation to the USA, or to become independent countries, although Mexico probably would be bigger than it is today, that's for sure

they couldn't have. but their plan was to retake texas and move upwards through the south encouraging slave revolts that would've ideally done most of the fighting for their forces so pushed forward..with growing instability in the homeland that inevitably forces the army home, with the american government feeding the secessionists arms in exchange for land if/when they win with the U.S army marching from the north while in the south you're dealing with a civil war the reality is though that mexico put up what resistance it could and lost, the U.S army on the other hand while taking alot of losses was nowhere near a limping dog mexico was plagued by secessionists and elites undermining unity even if they got their hands on top of the line gear the nation was falling apart at the seams, it would've postponed abit but ultimately still been a loss mexico was already a wounded mutt in no shape for a fight

Hey! Great video but I think there are some things that were not stated correctly. William Walker was born in Tenessee. I don't think stating that filibusters just took over a failed nation in Central American. As you might guess it is more complicated. He arrived in Nicaragua invited by one of two sides embroiled in a Civil War (if this makes Nicaragua a failed nation then so was the US a couple of years later) to shift the balance of the war, which he did but also took power over the country. Also Central American countries had more agency than just sitting on the sidelines while Vanderbilt kicked Walker out. Walker attempted to invade Costa Rica but was repelled and was eventually defeated by a Central American coalition army. The filibuster efforts did not fail only because of Vanderbilt but because the other Central American countries saw him coming for the rest and modernized their armies (CR even hired Prussian military instructors). They also organized a campaign to de-legitimize his regime in London, Paris and South America and secured funding for their military upgrades. Vanderbilt obviously helped but it was not all down to him only. Sorry for the long comment but I am stuck in my commute and thought this very US- centric perspective was too inaccurate. Anyway have a nice day.

@macdeus26014 жыл бұрын
@ᴇᴢᴇᴄʀɪs 305 I'm sure the answer to that is complicated. It's not just Nicaragua, though. When I lived in Honduras from 2013-15, Costa Rica had a reputation among most Hondurans I knew as basically "the one country in Central America that actually has its shit together." Costa Rica's economy is much stronger, its crime rates are much lower, its government is more stable and less corrupt, etc. than any of the "CA-4" countries. (Nicaragua, Honduras, El Salvador, and Guatemala.) Or at least that's what I heard. What I do know is that Costa Rica has a long history of being standoffish toward the rest of the region, and was the first area to secede from the short-lived Republic of Central America (an initial attempt to unite the whole region between Mexico and Panama into a single nation-state, except for Belize because it was a British territory at the time and did not become an independent country until the 1980's), which ultimately led to the total collapse of the Republic and the creation of the political map of the region that exists now. Maybe that's part of the reason--an isolationist tendency that has kept them from getting sucked into the various crises plaguing all the countries around them, kinda like Switzerland has done in Europe. I think there's also been a lot less meddling in Costa Rican politics by foreign countries (especially the USA), which has been a near-constant problem throughout the whole history of every other Central American country. E.g. the term "banana republic" originated in Honduras, apparently, and it originally referred to the corruption and instability created by US-based agricultural corporations (most infamously the United Fruit Company, now known as Chiquita) constantly bribing Central American government officials and instigating civil wars when the bribes didn't get them what they wanted. If there's a history of that in Costa Rica, I haven't heard of it, so if there isn't then maybe that's part of the reason they've managed to maintain more stability and avoid the violent chaos (or at least keep it to a minimum) that's otherwise been so common in the other Central American countries.

@jackd50895 жыл бұрын
Yes or if Micheal Collins never signed the treaty that divide the land
@BoldOne87605 жыл бұрын
Well Britain wouldn't have war but Ireland would. The Ulster Volunteers and Irish Volunteers would fight each other throughout the war while Britain sends a few troops to sort it out (not enough). Ireland would be a bloodbath but Britain has priorities in Europe and would ignore it. Because of this the home rule movement would disappear and be replaced with the Republican movement which would result in the war of independence starting in late WW1. This could see German support for the Republicans and a new front in the war. The central powers would still fail and the war of independence would go just like real life.

given the last few centuries of the Chinese empire were dotted with peasant rebellions, its safe to say any colonies would have been short-lived. worst case scenario, they actually cause the Empire to collapse sooner. how would China return to being a powerful nation after that I dont know, my knowledge of Chinese history doesnt allow me to predict that
@HaydenLau.5 жыл бұрын
@@696190 Or, the colonies would split off into a separate nation as China goes through yet another (not always peasant) revolution.
@TheRezro5 жыл бұрын
@@696190 That is the thing. China didn't fail because it didn't colonize. China didn't colonize for same reason it did failed. Chinese Emperors at the time were convinced that they are greatest nation on the world full of barbarian, what can't offer it anything. It is why they exploration effort (what is important part here) was canceled and that why peasants rebellions happened. Even when technologically superior ships of British Empire arrived, Chinese capital treat them like shit punishing low rank officers who did see that fact and try react accordingly. So when British couldn't get what they want (tea) they start be aggressive even if after costly subjugation of India they didn't have money and patience for conquest anymore. They were forced to do so anyway. If China would continue exploration, they would encounter other empires beforehand and if they would stay open minded and adopt foreign tech like Japan, what has western firearms and English naval adviser, who was ironically one who convinced Tokugawa to kick out Spanish missionaries attempting to use they standard religious conquest tactic (before they close country, what was obvious mistake) they in fact could stay greatest empire on the earth. Adaptability is what in fact create Empires, not subjugation. Same rule was true also in case of Roman Empire what in fact "steal" most of they brilliant technology, which they were capable to use it in accumulated way.

• What If Antarctica Was Green? • What if the United States had Won the War of 1812? I think these would be cool ideas for you to tackle!
@ThePalaeontologist5 жыл бұрын
1. Antarctica was green, long ago (in the Mesozoic Era; in the time when Dinosaurs lived there) Climate change and changing water currents, combined with continental drift moving Antarctica closer to the south pole compared to its previous latitudes, made the unique ecosystems there perish and new ones emerge, in the much colder conditions. That said, even 100 million years ago during the Early Cretaceous Period, life was harsh in the polar forests of Gondwanaland (the season climate included monsoons, and harsh winters in the twilight zone, where daylight lasted only a few hours of dim light every day, and Dinosaurs among other animals, had to cope with freezing conditions - some migrated away, others stayed) At the time, Australia and Antarctica were joined until they broke apart millions of years later. Dinosaurs and other prehistoric animals had lived in Gondwanaland since at least the Early Jurassic Period. The climates would have been generally stable and lacking major variety for tens of millions of years; global climate was remarkably stable and long lasting in the Jurassic Period, and in general it was a lush, warm and wet climate, with dual seasons (not the 4 we have now), cycling between wet and dry over and over for tens of millions of years. Though the polar regions were always cooler and drier than the tropics, or the equatorial regions, it goes to show how verdant and hot the world was, that the poles were never frozen over in this time and always pretty warm. Think, Mediterranean climates, rather than polar ones as we'd see them today (whereas in the bulk of the rest of the world, conditions were much hotter still, and the Dinosaurs lived in their golden age) Australia and Antarctica/Gondwanaland in that time, however, were undergoing gradual cooling until by the Cretaceous Period, things were getting cold. Temperate forests more like those seen in New Zealand today, were not as barmy in weather as they'd once been. As the rest of the world basked in glorious warmth, the poles did begin to cool much more noticeably. The crocodiles that dominated the waterways of the majority of the rest of the world, could not threaten to overwhelm the waterways of the great southern continent of Gondwanaland, for a long time. This allowed for strange relics such as Koolasuchus, a giant Labyrinthodont Temnospondyl (a huge Amphibian, 6 metres long) to survive when its kind had vanished from most of the rest of the world. These things were ancient long before the Cretaceous; in fact, their kind had evolved over a hundred million years before the time of the Dinosaurs, in the Triassic Period. They began to decline in the Triassic and plummeted in numbers in the Jurassic, as reptiles dominated - but the last remnants of their ancient kind, clung on in what is now Australia and Antarctica. The waters, too cold for their reptilian rivals to follow. However, the seas around the world were still dominated by marine reptiles. Eventually, these unique polar forests would be killed off by the continuing cooling of the climate, and a spectacular chapter of the evolution of life on Earth, was closed forever. Long before the time of the Dinosaurs, Gondwana/Gondwanaland, had been green too, during the times of the Permian Period and earlier, in a very different world. You have to go back to the Permian and Carboniferous to find ice on the poles (particularly in the Carboniferous glaciations) but that itself was a strange time. 2. The British Empire could not be beaten in the War of 1812. It held total naval superiority and there is no getting around that. Even had the British not bothered to send a single infantry soldier into battle, the navy alone could win the war by blockade. Not happening.
@masonpyle59295 жыл бұрын
The US won the War of 1812 because if the Americans lost the US would be either be part of Canada or still be a British colony.

Havana is centrally located and would be well-connected by sea. Defense of it would be difficult, perhaps, but Cuba has been trucking along in our actual timeline since 1865, so maybe it could have been maintained. Given the colonizer's wanting to maintain power, it seems like a relatively decent choice for a capitol.

There were too many things that could've gone wrong, but others ones could be achieved: For gaining UK & French support the rebels should've abolished slavery, but this was rebellion's first cause; Naturally Lee's army could've made short work of Juarez rebels, gaining not only an ally with Maximilian but also the French Empire and the Hapsburg; The Spain was so bankrupt that couldn't afford a war in the Caribbean, so a monetary compensantion could be useful; At the end a sort of Cold War btw the North and Europe's backed South would be the most realistical setting
