I find this amusing. British thinking they are the best. Americans thinking the same. Britain has the most naval experience due to its geographical location. But after giving up their colonies (by fource or willingly)..(or by some epic guy almost starving himself) America is by far the stronger country and as such has a better navy. Also wars like Vietnam are 100% opinionated. On a technical level america was winning. However Vietnam was a far less developed country in comparison and america was putting itself in an unnecessary position where it was at a disadvantage and losing more than it should have. Matched with the countless civilians dead by Americans and Vietnamese it was better to pull out of there. The only thing im gonna say which is opinionated is SAS is the best secret service :D

Britain entered WW2 with 1918-level equipment and many shortages, so it couldn't fight Germany. The only thing Britian had was the Channel, which protected them because Germany isn't located at the sea and didn't have a good Navy. There was nothing Britain could do to defeat Germany. Had Hitler defeated the USSR, Britain would have to accept Germany as the new lord of Europe.

@@MargaritaMagdalena German superiority at the beginning of WW2 , say blitz, is actually a myth. The reason behind allis catastrophic defeats at the beginning of the war came down to poor planning, cognitions and co operations. Yes, most British infantry weapons were from WWI but it doesn't mean their toothless, besides British tanks were on paper stronger than those of those of the Germans' in 1939. There are books about topics like these , you can take a look at them , or maybe visit Military History Visualised , I highly recommend his channel

In the 1960's, surviving Generals, both British and German, got together and wargamed Operation Sealion. They did it several times, altering the scenario on each occasion to reflect various general situations that might reasonably have existed. Every time they ran the wargame Sealion failed. German forces never managed to penetrate more than about twenty miles inland (well short of encircling London) and they were invariably driven back into the sea within a few days. The scenario presented here, where German forces manage to push north of London, is actually quite an optimistic one, from a German point of view.

Over time even if Germany won the entire War , they would have gave back Britain, France, USA, Canada and Russia. Just like the Russians gave back East Germany,Poland, Ukraine and Czechoslovakia in 1989. Germany a country of only 80 million could not occupy Europe, America and Russia forever. Let's get real. Even Britain could not police and maintain Southern Ireland do to resistance fighting from the IRA.

...generals generally lose because they make predictable, flawed assumptions and predictable, flawed decisions based on predictable, flawed assumptions. Throughout the history of armed conflict you have victories, losses and draws. So roughly 2/3rds of generals are losers. The winning generals stay on and the losers are replaced. Attacking the UK would at the very least have taken much of the RAF and British Navy out of the question. It simply begged for a command raid. Would have been brilliant even if they were pushed back into the sea.

@@ftblaze6175 in the Battle of Britain the main reason Britain could keep going was when a plane was shot down the pilot was rescued and sent back to base to get a new one. Whereas trained a German pilots became prisoners of war. The Germans did lose many aircraft, but so did Britain, but Britain didn’t lose the pilots.

Then they should use some Bresnik tactic a bit to get some more land. Then make it a defensive castles, foundations and fortifications ,trenches, underground bases multi layered defense to attack fortresss. They should use unconventional tactics. They should send at the beginning especial forces and sinpers and skirmishes, then rest flow. They can block and defend the supplies throw the defense offense position cannons and rockets. The supplies can be delivered with submarines at night. They can design and use tactical boats too. Maby make some tactical boats cable to go under water at some depth like 200m or so. Try to push a little bit and then hold on to the land you have. The pushes can be used to make trap lines. These soldiers should be the best. Use gang and such tactics to some unites that would advance outside of the German line. Just put massive amounts of fire power with these soldiers. Also put in France a big power on the side of sea the navy, airforce and another havey defense line with additional big many cannons that would support the navy if the British navy wants to do things. If the Germans are losing lines thhen those lines full it with explosives. If the Germans get over powered then leave and re do it again and again. Forceing the British ground forces to go throw this narrow one side line to fight a very strong defense. This can be a good way to force them to surrender and a strong defense against a DDay. I was thinking that they could have used German technology to build the channel tunnel some 50 years quicker than was eventually achieved. Of course the British unions would have been upset by this and mounted a counter attack demanding the 20 hour week, redundancy pay for any worker not employed and free champagne for the union bosses. Along with medical care, health care and a big increase in the wages paid for non work.

There's still one more factor to keep in mind : the British Empire had immense manpower reserves across the four Continents to whom it could turn to in case of desperate need. Therefore, any attempt of invading Britain was already doomed from the start.

Hitler also delayed development of the worlds first cruise missile because he had a dream it would set the sky on fire. After the war Allied generals said that had the V bombs been hitting England during the preparation for D-day, as opposed to several months after it, that would have severely disrupted their preparations.

Realistically, with the Royal navy being so huge, it wouldeve been almost imposable for the Germans to sustain any type of beach head once they were on English soil.

realistically, even in any scenario where the germans make it to british soil and keep going, they lose reguardless of any naval success up to that point. germans cross the channel? loss. germans surround london? still loss. germans maintain supply lines? not for long. britain is an island, and that tells you all you need to know about why operation sealion fails in every possible case.

The RN was comparatively big at WW2 start but it was a quarter of it's size at the start of WW2 and it had world-wide commitments it had to maintain. On the run up to WW1, we had what they called "a two power navy" meaning we could take on the worlds next two biggest navies simultaneously which could have been the US & Germany. At some point this got prohibitively expensive

And yes, France was overstretched, but mainly they lost to the British because they couldn't choose a continent to focus their manpower and resources on. The British knew that it had no hope fighting in Continental Europe, therefore they focused all their efforts in the New World, India, and Africa. If the French used this to the advantage and say, invaded the British Isles, or if they spent the war aiding the Austrians, then the tides would turn in the favor of the Catholics.

You have missed a scenerio and probably the most interesting aspect on an invasion of England..... Churchill feared that Germany would invade. Churchill made plans to wage a Guerilla war. Plans were made to destroy roads, bridges and railways. Civilians were trained in firearms and making IEDs. Even school children were to be trained in using weapons. Schools had weapons and munitions hidden in them. Churchill even ordered soldiers to bury weapons chaches in their gardens in England. When the war turned and we gained the upper hand alot of this soldiers went off to mainland europe and died. Some of these caches of munitions are found to this day when people build house extensions, etc. The plan was to wead down the Nazis from within.

Even though the Americans weren't big in numbers at that time, the Germans saw that soon, the Americans joining the war would mean ultimate defeat because the Americans could lose more men than the Germans could. The problem the Germans had is that Hitler got pissy after the Churchill "we'll fight them on the beaches" speech and changed targets. Instead of bombarding mainly RAF targets and really dominating the skies, he forced them to start hitting civilian targets and cities. Keep bombarding the RAF and you eventually have control of Britain's airspace. After that, the invasion gets A LOT easier. Probably not the glorious victory that Hitler would be looking for, but without the RAF and the Navy meeting it's match against the Luftwaffe, Britain would be forced to look at peace talks

+CMD 3 that's a total myth that was started by the Luftwafffe itself. The British never permanently lost a single airstip, factory or RADAR station to the German bombing because the ordanance wasn't large enough, resistance was too strong and their bombing missed absolutely everything that wasn't literally the size of a city. The fact that the Germans change targets did give the RAF some breathing room but it didn't save them and the attrition rates of the Luftwaffe still would have been far too high to maintain the air war, still resulting in an emphatic RAF victory. The myth started because at the start of the Battle of Britain the Germans believed the British only had over 200 aircraft when in fact the real numbers were 300% larger and the British overestimated the Luftwaffe numbers, resulting in over compensation of aircraft proudction and the British begain outproducing the Germans with a far more acceptable loss ratio. Bear in mind that Britain lost 60,000 civilians in the entire war through German targetting of civilian areas, whereas the British killed around 400,000 German civilians through targetting of mostly industrial areas with a bomber loss ratio that never exceeded 10%. If Germany didn't outright surrender from bombing that was literally 10x more intensive, why would the British ever surrender to an air campaign doomed to fail?

All you need is to slow the RAF to the point where your resources can occupy the Royal Navy. Don't get me wrong, you're right to think that the outcome is still probably a German loss in Britain if they don't improve. But Hitler changing targets gave the RAF the breathing room necessary to fight back. Ironically, Hitler made the same mistake in Russia during the Battle of Kursk. Had he allowed the Wermacht to press on instead of diverting forces to an already lost Italy, the war in the East probably leads to a stalemate or even a German victory

You're still perpetuating the myth my friend, the RAF was not meaningfullly slowed down by the tagettting of RAF targets, there were too many airstrips, too many fighters, too many RADAR stations and nowhere near enough air power to suprress them. Once again I'm sorry but there's another fallacy. The Germans had no dedicated naval bombers and their bombers were too inaccurate and their dive bombers were too weak to even stand a good chance at disabling a destroyer. I read about a battleship that was targetted and attacked for days by dive bombers but they simply couldn't do any meaningful damage about it, I'lll send the link if I can find it. Even if the Luftwaffe could seriously damage the Royal Navy, the British had more ships than the Germans had planes, the sheer military force of the navy would be more than enough to resist an invasion and sustain enemy fire.

My Grandma was a child in Britain during WW2 and she always tells me how after how quickly most of Europe fell to the Nazi’s they were genuinely afraid about the Nazi’s being able to create some horrible new weapon to cross the channel and invade the British Isle. It's the same thing as my HOI4 games: Distract the Royal Navy for long enough to get the initial force to land, then rush as many more units as you can into the ports. The moment the Royal Navy inevitably defeats you at sea, the clock starts ticking. You either overwhelm and defeat Britain before they recover from the initial shock, or risk losing the entire invasion force. If sufficient progress isn't made quickly enough, there is no chance of victory.

Meh, a very lazy and not well thought through episode of alternate history. Of course air superiority was a neccessary condition for something like Operation Sealion. Once gaining air superiority failed, all invasion plans were cancelled and more specific plans for invading the Soviet Union were developed. So an alternate line in history where Germany invades the UK mainland would include German air superiority. With it, naval supremacy of the UK becomes relative because UK ships would not have been able to simply enter the English Channel and hunt German transport and supply ships but suffer huge losses from air and torpedo attacks. Also, with air superiority over the English Channel, the German Navy would have been able to concentrate its forces within the English Channel and support the operation. This neccessary condition changes the whole scenario.

Spectrum16 US wouldn't be involved until 1941 and even then, Hitler reluctantly declared war because of the alliance with Japan. Suez, Malta, Gibraltar, and Singapore were all threatened at one point or taken and India was over British rule and wanting independence. ANZAC, what was left of mainland resistance and Canada aided UK. Roosevelt was nervous for the Atlantic Charter and Lend Lease to be even that remotely involved because of the American public opinion. By all accounts, UK had little choice but to be self reliant and hold on.

robert musialek Interesting, I guess the war would be maybe a year longer, and much larger part of Europe would be overrun by the Red Army. But I guess the western allies would have made another attack, or if it took too long would have eveb used nuclear weapons in Europe. Also the cold war afterwards would have been much hotter with all of Germany on the Soviet side and maybe even more.

One of the main things that prevented Sea lion was the beast of the RAF! And because of the extremely short window between France and Yugoslavia/Greece means that the Luftwaffe needed to have gone ballistic and destroyed the RAF in about a month. In other words Sea lion got closer than most realise, but it got as close as it possibly could in our timeline!

The British had a massive volunteer force conscripted. And you’re right. There would have been a lot of loss of life on both sides for very little gain. Kind of a battle of attrition, the British government would have escaped to Scotland and guerrilla warfare would have been the order of the day. So Hitler quite correctly abandoned the invasion for those reasons. He needed as much man power for invading Russia. Too much loss for so little gain by invading Britain, defeating the purpose of invading Russia.
