Thank you so much for this animation! I had to watch it like three times ^^ I like how the struggle in the end wasn't about being con or pro, it was about life and coming together despite our differences. I was going to say humanity, but they aren't human 😂 In the beginning, we see the current unification with the cops and our lovely Doki and Nabi. But are immediately pushed into Il-ho's dark past of being bullied for being different and how his brothers were there to witness the effects, not really understanding the situation. (Honestly, can we get a reconciliation arc with his parents if they're still alive because his mom seems so nice and his dad, while harsh and not understanding, was trying to protect his household😅) At the concert, the anti ran in to get away and Pi wanting to help. But because it was a 'pro' space and they had different views, the bullies and crowd 'justified' treating the anti badly. Then at the rescue mission, despite their differences, Pi goes to Il-ho. They band together with Sam-ho to stop Yi-ho's extremity. They didn't go to support their side, they went to free the wrongly imprisoned anti-faction. To protect his brother, Il-ho throws Yi-ho out of the way. He puts an pause to the fighting by accepting both sides of himself and roaring but gets hurt. This causes everyone to put their differences aside and save another's life. Wow. I love how you tackle societal issues with interesting stories. I would love to know where your inspiration comes from. Will there be another five part series going into the lives of Doki and Nabi's children and the challenges they will face? Even with such a well rounded support system, they're bound to face their own issues. I mean, growing up with all that immediate attention and expectation could be rough. Or will you also dive into the stories of the side characters from the main story? Sam-ho who has a lot of heart is so quiet here, I want to get more of him 😅 I'm too greedy, right? It doesn't matter what you do, we support and root for you 😊😊😊❤❤❤❤ Thank you again!

Lion dad is just fierce and proud in his demeanour. Unfortunately most we got to see was him berating Il-ho for mistreating his mother, but rightly so (she was just trying to comfort him). Lion dad was carrying a camera at Il-ho's graduation ceremony, practical yet sentimental, there'll be photos to hang up, put on his desk, into an album. (edit: had a closer look and lion dad was wearing an entire brace for the camera :P) Their delinquency is kind of a mystery (but something important to explore too)

4:53 I like this mention that if someday they were to have a mixed-species child of their own, Il-ho is afraid that the child will be bullied like he did. But then Doki reassures him by saying that they will have many kids, so their children will have eachother and will even loved by other pure children. Showing how optimistic and confident she is about her future family's life together. I love how their short cameo is meant to help Il-ho out with his fear of the future for inter-species lovers.

@tsunertoo91498 ай бұрын
I think it's probably one of the best written parts over all because the over all growth is shown to be several growths folded together. Because in the end you kind of realize Doki's plan here, is actually almost the exact same as Il Ho's mom. She also had a number of kids who we can see hanging together and supporting eachother. However societies pressures were great, and ended up pushing them into the wrong direction. Doki is essentially acting like a younger Il-Ho's mom here. Meaning in a kind of second hand fashion, Il-Ho's mom is re-explaining her over all plan, THROUGH DOKI. Il-Ho finally fully comprehending His mother and his father now, is able to act upon their feelings properly and bring his family back together. Because Doki got Il-Ho to realize that the growth of hybrids is going to have to be incremental. Yes they may suffer for now, and they might lose their way. But as long as they follow a goal and stick together, eventually society as a whole will begin to accept them. It's what allowed Il-Ho to overcome the fear instilled in him by his dad. He understood his father now, for he believed his rage was simply in response to Il-Hos actions to his mother. But no, it wasn't just that. Il-Ho was actively antagonizing the future of ALL OF HIS FAMILY AND ALL FUTURE HYBRIDS. Now completely understanding this, Il-Ho was able to use what he inherited from his dad, to defeat his bro who was now conducting the same actions. Endangering future hybrids, and threatening the cohesion of his family.

I remember missing the viewing for this years ago thinking I would never get the chance to see this. To my surprise, I found this after "There She Is" came to mind in a fleeting thought. I am very thankful for the public release and it having been made in the first place. This series has always held a special place in my heart. As a kid, it was one of the first pieces that ever moved me when it came to romance. I don't know why, but it felt so earnest and warm. I could feel the awkwardness of their encounter, the joys of their togetherness, the pains of their separation, and the relief in acceptance. In spite of society, they fought, lost, and found each other again. It was beautiful. Older now, this is the cherry on top being able to see more of the perspectives of the other characters, especially the reasoning for his actions back then. There's even a wonderful revisit to the ideas of separation and acceptance all over again this time with friendship and a bit of love. Even the two extremes of society have a bit of closure knowing they can and do come together. Not only do the original two get to move forward to a more hopeful future, but so does everybody else. And the music is just as punchily moving and perfect as it has always been. It's so much fun! Thank you so much for this series, SamBakZa.

@GoatJesus8 ай бұрын
@@nico-wj1mhspeaking as an American it's really hard to say. The sentiment is mostly true: change through kindness is preferable to violence -- but regarding racial injustice in the USA that might not be possible. Kindness over violence is a luxury afforded to those with enough wiggle room in society already. We've seen plenty of situations where violence is necessary and bigots don't deserve the easy way out. Through a South Korean lens though, it could be more culturally applicable but I'm not SK so I can't say. I think though, the story is quite touching and has some truth to it even if it's also a bit naive in the framework of what's happened in 2020 and currently with say, trans rights in the USA. Ultimately this is a story that is trying to be about how bigotry is bad and violence isn't good either and those things I can agree with in broad strokes.
@nico-wj1mh8 ай бұрын
@@GoatJesus So on agreement: I'm American too so we're on the same page there. The story of steps 1-5 were touching to me too, especially 5 when Nabi tears up the plane ticket. That was my favorite scene in the whole series by far, and I still kind of get teary-eyed seeing it. And I obviously also agree that change through kindness is preferential to violence, and I agree that in the very, *very*, VERY broad strokes, that's what Another Step is concerned with. But to be clear, I really only think that reading works if you don't look into the details, and not even the deep details, but like surface-level plot elements that were presented unambiguously in steps 3 through 5, and especially 4. With those things in mind, the resolution in Another Step kind of puts a bad taste in my mouth. In some ways, reading some of the other comments on this video (not yours - I see you have a nuanced reading), I think I'm probably feeling how you felt after you saw rave reviews for 3.0+1.0 and were wondering whether you watched the same film. Like just to reiterate what the "bad guys" are in this, they're a segregationist mob trying to enforce anti-miscegenation by throwing rocks through Nabi and Doki's windows (step 3, 4), beating Doki into a hospital bed (step 4), almost killing Doki's hedgehog (step 4), kicking them out of restaurants (step 4), harassing them for sitting on a park bench (step 4), vandalizing everything they see with hateful propaganda (steps 3, 4, 5, another), and chasing Nabi and Doki for just...existing around town (steps 4, 5, another), and this is ALL with the implication of violence, which again they demonstrated by seriously injuring Doki. The generous reading of Another Step with these details in mind is a condemnation of vigilante and mob justice, but that interpretation still feels wrong to me because the righteous violence in this case is only happening as a reaction to the extreme and *violent* injustice from the other side. The cops are (maybe fittingly) completely incompetent in this series, who will overlook all the violence from the segregationists but will go "Real shit?" when someone runs a red, so there's nothing for the good guys in this series to fall back on except to either spend the rest of your life running away (which is literally what Nabi has to do to get to his own wedding without a concussion) or to fight. Another Step seems to go out of its way to make the latter seem distasteful, seemingly sanitizing the actions of the segregationists compared to steps 3-5, and then portraying the civil rights group as going "too far" with it, which is just bizarre. The problem here is that even with that framing, I'm pretty sure that literally rounding the segregationists up and putting them behind bars is *correct* because they're preventing segregationist violence. Segregationists SHOULD be scared to go outside with their stupid T-shirts and signs, they SHOULD be afraid to chase someone around town, they SHOULD be afraid to throw rocks through someone's window, they SHOULD be afraid to beat the shit out of someone. It should be embarrassing to hold these views. The world should be a miserable place for people who hold them, because what happens when someone can't run away? Like say, if you get jumped in the school bathroom and get the shit kicked out of you? The worst part to me is how it ends, though. Everyone coming together to save someone from being seriously injured reads to me as kind of funny because of how much violence the segregationists have already inflicted. The implication is that the segregationists are actually big softies and were larping or something and didn't want anyone to get hurt? That's beyond even naivety. There's room in the themes for Doki's blind optimism, but it feels misplaced in a story that establishes itself as both an extremely dangerous place for her and Nabi and as one where violence is somehow never the "correct" solution. Step 5 ends with Doki and Nabi staying in their hometown and cleaning up the vandalism on the vending machines, and when I first saw it, I took it as a powerful message to fight for the people you love and for your right to be where you are. Another Step ends with the twist that the segregationists "just weren't that serious," which falls flat knowing that Doki was beaten into the dirt for existing just 2 episodes before.

I remember the time that I showed the remastered "There She Is" compilation to my ex-girlfriend during the only time she ever visited my house. I really wanted to show it to her because I knew that she liked Sanrio and other "kawaii" stuff, not to mention how passionate she was about social justice, so I thought she would have loved it! You could only imagine my confusion when she couldn't get through a minute of the first part before complaining that she wanted to watch something else like those "KZbin Poops" she always watches. This step right here presents every reason why I was so excited to show it to her, as well as why I felt so insulted that someone like her, who would call out the racist actions of a musician whenever somebody brings said musician up, would rather not watch it. It's cute, but it's the message that has always stuck with me, one that promotes pacifism and fights against the politics surrounding people's livelihoods. Also, I can't forget to mention the music, which always gives me goosebumps, especially Wolsik. Imagine has the best lyrics, being a musical response to "Imagine" by John Lennon. This part was especially surprising with how it portrays those of mixed race, as well as presenting the issue of modern extremism in such symbolic manners. It now makes sense to me how the crew tried to hide their cat side to be more rabbit-like, especially the leader due to the trauma of getting roared at by his dad. It's only at the end that he embraces his duality and understands that he comes from both sides. I feel that this somewhat hints that there may have been some social disparity in privilege between cats and rabbits, though it seems that those of mixed species will be the ones who will suffer the most at this stage. I also really enjoyed the music being just as tough as our protagonists. The scene where the masked one drops every single weapon and it turns out that he has a giant machine gun in there was really funny, by the way. "There She Is" will always have a special place in my heart. Edit: Not only did I graduate from college yesterday, but I also talked with my ex who had been avoiding me ever since we broke up. I told her that I was not mad that she broke up with me, and now, we're on good terms again.

Thank you for loving "There She Is!!" for so many years.
@gilbertozo8 ай бұрын
@amalloc Of course! In the end, we all enjoy different things, and even if we feel strongly about that disparity, we should respect that. I did eventually put one of her favourite KZbin videos on so that her visit could be worthwhile, but after a month, she broke up with me with no explanation. I was fine with it because I already considered breaking up due to how I felt that there was no real communication between us and I didn't feel like I could tell her how I really felt for fear of angering or offending her. Sometimes, the best matches in life aren't always the ones where you have the most in common, which is why I loved "There She Is" and have always come back to it. I always loved that even with the societal aspect of interspecies romance, as well as their clashing personalities, Nabi gave Doki a chance (after hijinks ensued) and ended up falling in love with her himself. The fact that he knows about this societal rule and that he chooses to keep an open mind and receive her love is admirable in more ways than one. In fact, I should be thanking _you_ for keeping the story going and for creating an absolute masterpiece of Internet animation!

@SaviourV I mean, we are both very strange. We had a lot in common in our taste in style, similar music preferences, desire to edit videos, and in that we are both neurodivergent. Heck, we even watched the same preschool show when we were much younger! However, despite how similar in our quirks we were, that wasn't enough to carry the relationship because of how much she preferred to limit herself to only what she felt comfortable with and her secretiveness on many aspects that I felt were essential to an intimate relationship. For example, she always cited her mother's cancer as a reason why I couldn't visit her house after visiting mine, and even if I suggested just coming to the porch, she still didn't want to. I may have been a bit pushy about it, but it made no sense to me how I couldn't be in proximity of her house because of her mother's cancer(it's ewing sarcoma.), and she didn't want to explain it at all. But yeah, I do hope to find my Doki, someone who's not just more loving and respecting of me and my quirks, but more communicative and energetic to balance out my more relaxed personality. Someone I can actually be intimate with and not feel anxious around.

There She Is be like: Main characters lore: a rabbit and a cat love each other and that causes controversy taking reference to the relationships between Japanese and Koreans but in a more humorous way. Secondary characters lore: (In fact I actually like both stories)

I was happy when Doki and Nabi got together in Final Step. However, watching Another Step left me with mixed feelings. I'm half Japanese, half Korean. I know the sadness of not being able to be either. It made me think about a lot of things. ...I'm happy to have come across this story! This story gave me the opportunity to start studying Korean.The DVD and postcards of There She is!! are my treasures! Thank you for creating this wonderful story!😄 (I used Google Translate)

I've been showing the original 5 steps ever since I found the animations back in.. 2007? 2009?.. to as many people as possible. It really is one of the greatest animated works of the last 20 years. It tells a story in the most human way possible. Keep making great stuff, SamBakZa!

I really love this mini series, since the day it appeared on the internet. I was still a teenager and today I am a mother and I enjoy history with my daughter. Thank you for continuing to tell us about doki and nabi and how their love can change the world. I need more. I need my emotions to fly again like when I was a little girl and singing "it's my birthday".

This marked my life! My first girlfriend introduced me to it. At the time we were in our early 20s, and we were already close to breaking up after a few years of relationship... Today, after almost 15 years, I sent her this episode, and she didn't know what to say, but she was very grateful and happy. Keep reading, the stories in this universe are beautiful.

I introduced There She Is to my wife last night. Back in the day when they were coming out on Newgrounds, I had only seen the first two episodes, which were adorable, but didn't get into the darker subject matter of the later episodes. I have to say though that I love what you've done here. You've crafted a nuanced and powerful allegory for the complications of interracial/interfaith relationships, and really considered all the angles. I'm glad you're still creating, and I look forward to whatever you do next. Thanks!!!

I remember SamBakza, it opened in a flash window on that old pc, I was maybe 11 at that time, just there to play online games but something made me stay and watch over and over this video about a awesome bunny and a brave cat, this is one of my oldest memories of how I fell in love with art and telling stories, and now I tell my own on my own way, what you have done will be always in my heart, I wish you the best and hope to keep feeling warm in my chest with every piece of art you made (I also remember the page were you was able to click the characters to know their type of relationship) I'm glad I found you again after so many years ❤
