The thing with Tom is that He knows A LOT of theory and practice. He became so free with the fret board, that He can change directions in a fly, modulating and adapting. Consequently, as I can read in some comments, some people feel that is less pleasant or musical than a melodic pattern that we can relate. It can feel for some like there is not enough feeling. In fact, your brain is not accustomed with the dynamic that He can put in any scale or connecting different ones. He is at a pick and climbing up even more. All technique should be effortless with the right practice. He did it. He is awesome. Way better than a lot of the shredders with a lot of speed, but not even close to the freedom that Tom has building his scales.
@DaveDexterMusic6 жыл бұрын
Alternative opinion: it's great playing but if people don't find it musical then it's not the fault of their brain. Some people simply don't enjoy the tonality. There's plenty of music that I don't understand, or didn't understand at one point, that I still found beautiful without any idea of what was being accomplished.

Just an opinion. This guy is very, very special and I've been listening to the best all my horribly long life; forget the chops, everybody's had that for years, usually hammering out the same dorian cliches we've all been using since 'Kind of Blue' only in 16ths at 240bpm. This guy's different, because of note choice, their non- sequential dynamic, time variation, implying other harmony and all in perfect time; just very, very, musical. Most shredding doesn't move me at all, Parker/Adderly/Farlow etcetc played just as fast AND over moving harmony that you had to make, but this guy's all that and as emotive as Albert King, and that's really something. For me.

There shouldn't be any criticism at all on this video. Some people say they see this video and they just want to quit,but it should be used as inspiration to try harder. I'm a decent player,never had lessons, all by ear, no training, and he's on another level than I am, and I'm OK with that because Tom has obviously put in the work and time to be as amazing as he is, it's only our own fault if we don't take the time and put in the hard work it takes to be better than we are. Remember, there was a time when even Tom, or anyone else this good , thought like some of us, but they didn't quit, and in not quitting, they put in all it took, and look at them now. We all can do it too, we just have to work hard at it. Tom, you're amazing. Thanks for inspiring

The flow of Legato to Staccato here is really beautifully done. Remember, legato is a sound not a technique and here he demonstrates this with brutally precise execution. If you are playing hammer ons and pull offs then you are not playing Legato. Just the action of hammer vrs pulloffs are two distinctive sounds and therefore cannot be called Legato. I have seen many videos of famous guys with their Legato section in their videos and they are not playing Legato although they say they are. On guitar Legato is a difficult sound to get right. Vinnie Moore plays Legato here and there but the masters of this are Allan Holdsworth, Marshall Harrison and Tom Quale!

Tbh most players are just lazy, learn a few licks and move those around. When you have a few scales memorized over the fretboard it becomes trivial, new scales you need to work with are just minor alterations to what you already know. I tell the few people who have asked for instructions to put this boring base work in as early as possible as it will help everything from there on immensely. It's like learning to read (which is way more complicated), you start to see where the chords go and what the relation of your fingers to this is. Then moving from a natural minor to a phrygian is done on the fly, you just see those few F's on the freboard you need to change and it's not a big deal. It's all in the ground work.

I say I am more of a slow bend David Gilmore type player, but the truth is that when you see something like this, and then picture the dedication of practice, and the possible reality that your fingers will never move that fast, and your brain just goes "NOPE!". Plenty to take out of Tom's playing for me in his note selection though. Great attention to the melodic possibilities of each chord, using different scale flavors and chromatic runs.

Tom is awesome, an absolutely amazing instructor and a lovely human being. I would just respectfully say that his playing is sometimes like an AI version of Guthrie: unreal technique and timing but nowhere near the same level of feel, touch, tone and raw excitement. He definitely has Incredible "percussive" feel and touch, though. Needless to say, if I could reach a tenth of his level I'd be happy. Huge respect for the way he teaches and explains.
