Over the last few weeks i have seen so many posts regarding these Dreamstation foam replacement kits. Honestly guys, please don't be stupid and buy these. Stop and think for 5 minutes and try and make good, informed decisions. You're so much smarter than this.
There is absolutely zero chance that this random amazon seller has done the proper safety tests so that it can be used in the air pathway of a medical device . It's about as safe as grabbing some styrofoam out of your garbage bin and jamming it in the casing.
The actual casing however looks the goods and after some discussions with the company they're sending me some casings without the foam for testing.
I'll put it in my dreamstation and use it for a few nights and let you know.

This is a phenomenal product. There is no foam in the replacement air chamber I purchased from Amazon. It has absolutely no odor and it is of a very high quality construction. This gets away from the issue of the foam completely and is a far better proposition than anything that Philips has done for its customers. Hats off to the people that produce this and made it available

Thanks for taking further action on our part. You have all the questions now that I have that help keep me awake at night. I hope this thing will be over soon, but I don't think that it will be. I been using Philips machines since 1994. Now on a Dreamstation I, I am not a smoker or industrial worker, but I've had COPD now for many years. Nick, thanks for all of your great videos. Today I disassembled my unit with the intention of removing the foam so I can use the machine again. Your directions were spot on. When I got down to the turbine housing, I saw that 1+1/2” of foam was already gone (into my lungs?). When I ran the Weasel it turned the remaining foam into greasy mush. No way to clean the housing but plenty of stuff to stain anything it came into contact. I’ll order the foamless housing, despite voiced concerns, as I’ve been without for months. I am warning everyone I know who uses a SoClean, as that’s the source of my issues.

Hiya', Nicko; Thank you for all you do. My wife is worried to use her Dreamstation (I have an AirSense 10). So I took a small piece of paper towel (Bounty brand, I think) & used to 'filter' the air. I held it in place & slid the hose over it, on top of the CPAP to hold it in place. She tried the CPAP & said the air comes out alright. I also use a piece of toilet tissue on my AirSense as a 'prefilter'. I do it to make the inlet filters last a bit longer before they turn grey. Have a GREAT day, Neighbor!

Congratulations on your refund. My DS Bipap is only 9 months old and they didn't even notify me until 2 weeks ago and say they will not refund it only repair it, but have no timeline on when. I don't know if they are going to survive this. I fear they are headed for belly up and many of us left out to dry

Nick, love your channel, dude! Use your growing influence to have a company make a turbine casing without the foam, I'm willing to bet it would be a great seller. I followed your instructions on another video and was able to take my DS1 apart with only a few basic tools (left the foam in though). I believe many of us who still love the DS1 would be able to do replace the casing.

@M Booja Unfortunately I am, doctor advised that I keep using it. I did try sleeping without it but found that I could not. I am on a list for a new Airsense 11 machine and may try the latest technique for removing the DS1 foam using a drain weasel just posted by Nick. On the plus side, I have never used an ozone machine to clean my DS1, have never seen any bits of foam in the water reservoir and have no symptoms .

Thank you so much for the heads up. I found and bought the replacement housing WITHOUT foam and installed it on Monday. I finally got a restful nights sleep last night with the modified machine which I haven't in months. I don't think its any louder than with foam. Whenever I get my replacement from Philips I'm going to reinstall the foam housing so they wont know I tinkered with it. Thanks again!

Hey Nick, this video brings into question the type of plastic they have utilised also. There are certain chemical additives used in plastic manufacture to obtain better injection moulding, hardness / malleability, durability etc...some of these chemicals can have a serious potential to damage health and offgas for extended periods. One would assume that the CPAP machine manufacturers have used plastics that have been tested and are supposedly reasonably safe for long term use, as the plastic would not degrade like the foam, there may be no warning via visualising solid particles in tanks and tubes to alert the user that there is an issue.

I have a friend that has the Phillips dream station and her husband is very techy. She told me that he did research and changed the filter and casing. She said the machine is quieter and works great. Hi Nick, one caution with this: the plastic that the chamber is made out of might outgas VOCs, too. Plastics can leach out all sorts of nasty things depending on how they're made, and a lot of sketchy plastic goods you can buy online arrive smelling like a toxic chemical plant. Without knowing their materials and processes, and unfortunately, without testing that tank too (as this would be part of what Philips is testing with their system-level tests), I don't think we can honestly conclude that even an empty knock-off tank is any better.

I’m not sure how I feel about an empty case from a random fly by night Chinese company. It appears to be made of polypropylene, which is relatively safe and has low outgassing properties, and appears to be the same or similar as the OEM housing. But still, it’s made by a random fly-by-night company. Would you use it as a plate and eat your dinner off it? Would you use it as a soup bowl? If not, then you probably shouldn’t breathe through it.

Oh, please. People eat off and out of plasticware all the time. In the 50s-60s, melamine dishes were common-- no reports of mass casualties. What about the silicone mask itself? Are you certain this is 100% safe? This fear sells to young mothers who spray their doorknobs and cupboard handles with Lysol.

@@Pw6872 In the US, medical devices must pass biocompatibility tests to make sure that they do not contain any harmful or irritating substances. Any polymer can contain harmful residue from the manufacturing process. Remember that some batches of the new white silicone-based foam used in the DS2 failed QC testing. Also remember when pet food and baby formula from China was adulterated with melamine to increase its apparent protein content. Thousands of pets and 6 babies died. These plastic inserts, if manufactured and tested properly, could be safe and pass biocompatibility tests. But can you trust the fly by night no name anonymous vendor?

Mainly because the device is not considered user serviceable. You can't readily buy any internal parts. You'd have to find a authorized/qualified repair shop who could have access to such parts.

Bought one an hour ago. I intend to remove the foam in it and keep my old casing with the old foam in it in case I need it for a lawsuit down the road. I order a ResMed machine almost two months ago and still waiting. Been using my air mini since late July when I was finally told about the recall. Decent for travel but frankly the waterless humification is only so so. I agree a foamless casing would be a lot more attractive. Anyone who is capable of doing this casing replacement is not stupid. The foam maybe what they claim but then again no way you can tell. My daughter's dog died from eating dog food from China.

Thank you - it appears I may be allergic to the latex and yet I’m a brand new user with 3 failed attempts. I’m trying again with my brand new resmed 11 as used my travel while waiting for the 11. I have been told if this doesn’t work (sinus issues each time before - with new machine) - to Try the hyper-allergenic masks. I’m so wanting this to work, but I wake up congested, yellow mucus and sneezing the better part of the next day. Please someone HELP and give guidance. Thank YOU!

Those crows don't play ball. I finally received my replacement Dream Station 2 bi-pap. Kinda waiting to see what will become of the new foam. I was wondering that if there were no foam of any kind in these things, have there been any tests to see if the motors/pumps themselves might emit VOCs? Thanks for all your info.

Hey Nick, I was under the impression the foam is an integral component in the regulation of air pressure. Wouldn’t a case without the foam cause the air to exit at the wrong pressure? Also, aren’t our dream station machines contaminated with foam partials and VOC’s at this point? A replacement chamber can’t remedy the contamination, right? BTW, I love your KZbins.

I believe the foam is at the entrance of the air path so between the filter and motor. From my understanding its to dampen noise exiting backwards through the entrance rather then down the cpap hose.

Hey Niko mate 😎👍 I am at a crossroads, 3 days ago someone dumped a Phillips box on my front veranda, containing what I am assuming a refurbished DS-1 in a carry case, with new power supply and a dodgy looking hose with no heater. It comes with instructions on how to swap out the modern and SD card and a 3D barcode on how to send my defective unit back at no expense to me. My fear is, I don’t trust Phillips as far as I can throw them and I am wondering how old and how many years of running the unit with the new sound abatement foam has run and is the new foam safe?!? Do I keep my 19 month old original unit which has no foam (because I removed it myself) with the help of your video! 👍 or do I switch over to this random refurbished one with new foam that may or may it be safe?!? Also by BTW the DreamMapper App won’t communicate with the replacement unit, I am guessing I have to uninstall the app and go through the motions, but the 3 page A4 instructions from Phillips make no mention of this. Anyhoo, love to know what you think, should I use the new one with snowflake ❄️ foam or keep my unit with a hollow manifold?!? Cheers mate 😎👍

You can check the date on the unit and the usage hors in the menus. I recall reading that part of the process was swapping the modem so maybe that's why you can't get the app to communicate with it. But I'd probably just send the new one back and continue using the old one w/o foam.

Amazing you can't just get a casing or machine with no foam. Philips could have offered this from the beginning for those who prefer safety over silence. I bought a BMC machine to replace my Phillips crap, but I certainly wonder whether their foam is any better. Can't really trust any company or the govt agencies that approve them. The air filter is thick black foam so I leave it out... But not sure whether to open up my new machine... I want a machine with foam on the outside of the casing...

I would rather have the "no foam" casing than the Philips upgraded foam. That is exactly what Philips should have done. Send the original casing without foam. I am beginning to think all foam degrades over time with heat, humidity, ozone, UV light, etc. Get the foam out of the air passages!

Looks the logical approach. I'm still trying to understand what's the purpose of the foam in the inlet of the turbine in Resmed or in the out of the turbine in the Philips. The antibacterial protection of the motor could make sense in the Philips one but not on Resmed. So removing the foam altogether could seem appropriate. Keeping it seems to be adding no benefit as such foam doesn't even need to be replaced over time so certainly doesn't get clogged with dust. The reason for its use could perhaps be sound insulation to prevent it from becoming a hornet. Ah, maybe that's the reason. In such case, getting a box to sound insulate the device or adding an extra tube extension to keep it away when sleeping could be a solution. Opinions are welcome.

I'm subscribed and love your vids! You just made a VERY SERIOUS MISTAKE tossing the ball at your crows. Although you may disagree, they ARE YOUR CROWS. Crows are one of the smartest bird there are. Crows have the ability to problem-solve and to use tools. Some analyses estimate crows as being as intelligent as a 5-year-old. A "Murder" of crows (Yes "Murder" is the official collective used to name a family/group/flock of crows) have a permanent and persistent memory of any animal, including humans, that they perceive has harassed or attacked them. Crows have the ability to differentiate between, and recognize individual humans. They WILL communicate their dislike/animosity of any specific animal or human to their entire "Murder". Piss them off enough, and they will stalk and harass you, and that can evolve all the way up to dive-bombing attacks. If you persist they WILL escalate! Once you piss off a Murder of crows, you will become their enemy for life. The claim about the foam that they are putting inside this casing is the same types of foam we will find inside ResMed, if that's true then why is it ok for us to feel safe with ResMed and not otherwise?

I have bought good products from China but also too many sketchy junk. Combine Made in China with Amazon and one should be wary. Thank you for your excellent videos. DreamStation auto CPAP. I can’t sleep without a CPAP machine. This one any previous one are both listed as recalls. According to Phillips it could be another year before I receive replacements. I added an inline hose filter that gets dirty after a month or so. I wish you Well, Bobby from Maryland, USA.

Poor crows, can’t catch a break! Well isn’t a case without foam a good idea?!! Why didn’t Philips think of that? I am using my Dreamstation without the foam (which I had to dig out with a piece of wire). No problems whatsoever with noise. Why didn’t Philips just send out empty replacement cases? Do they think folks are too stupid to replace the case themselves or what?

Yes, the devices are not user serviceable. If they were the manual would have included instructions to take it apart and repair/clean it.

@@Pw6872 if certainly is. There are no end user serviceable parts in the machines. That is true of practically every medical device you can buy largely due to FDA regulations. Even stuff that should be serviceable isn't. Like the blower motor. Should be easy to replace and reset the hour meter. But that's been the trend for decades. Throw away and replace not repair.

@@TEDodd I still disagree. If I open the contraption and remove the "sound abatement" foam inside, I have effectively "serviced" the machine to my liking. If you mean working the circuitry of the motherboard, etc., no it isn't intended to be end-user serviceable. But these recalled machines are not in question beyond the foam inside them. Whether it be tiny bits of foam or foam off-gassing VOCs, the potential danger lies in THE FOAM. Only.
