Nvidia has been trying to "proprietary tech" their way into a monopoly for a VERY long time now (PhysX, for example - they didn't even invent it!). They make good GPUs, but their approach to competition is inexcusably sleazy.

@jiroyamada1139 3 жыл бұрын
@@tudy000 Physx was created by Ageia, and designed to run on a separate add-on card (Physx PPU). nVidia acquired Ageia, then put Physx support into their GPUs and discontinued the PPU card. The Physx SDK also removed support for the PPU card, completing the lock-in.
@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 3 жыл бұрын
Ok, let's get some facts straight, because there's just too much false expectation around...and it's not how things work with Nvidia... Ageia's tech was ALSO proprietary...duuh! You would have needed to buy a separate card that does a lot of parallel processing, you would have needed separate drivers and you would have needed to have games supporting this standalone add-in card. What Nvidia have done is they looked ta the tech, noticed that it can be done effectively using parallel processors on their GPUs (CUDA) and they bought them out. What this did was enable a huge chunk of the market take advantage of the tech, where previously it would have been forgotten (how many games supported the PPU, can you tell me? How many did you play? Did you even know the PPU existed back then? I did.). The unfortunate truth is that as tech gets faster - a lot of what could previously not be done on the CPU - could now be done, at least in part, on it + there's just not that much demand for insane particle physics in games (which sucks... I loved making a mess in Mafia II, Alice: Madness Returns and Borderlands 2). Now let's take a look at some other "proprietary tech": Nvidia's G-Sync was a technological push during the time when the VESA variable refresh rate standard was not a thing. They had to rely on making their own chips for screens that can talk to the GPUs and the scaler boards to time and adjust the refresh rate correctly on-the-fly. This was HUGE at the time and was a move endorsed by the tech legends like Tim Sweeney and John Carmack. Fast forward some years - VESA comes out with a new DisplayPort spec, includes Adaptive Sync in it, AMD jumps on branding it because they now support it and everyone who didn't know what the hell is going on (including you, dear commenters) hails AMD as some hero... Nvidia is not responsible for monitor standardization - that's VESA's job. Because VESA integrated variable refresh rates into the new specs - Nvidia's proprietary chips were (almost) no longer needed. It's not a "haha Nvidia lost" kind of a thing - Nvidia pushed for the change by coming out with their own solution FIRST - at the time when no alternative existed! The same goes with FSR, but *not quite*... DLSS is a MACHINE LEARNING route, where an AI model can infer high-res images from low-res images using training data and a few supporting buffers that it gets from the game (such as the motion vector pass, which defines where and how fast the pixels/models are moving in space). FSR, on the other hand, uses spatial upscaling from a low res image, resulting in "crap in - crap out", if you will. If you took a low-res image into Photoshop and upscaled it and sharpened it - you'd get basically the same result - there cannot be extra detail where none was there to begin with. This is also clearly visible from their provided samples, as well as the video they had showcasing FSR. There's no machine learning that can synthesize (the same way as you can "imagine" a high-res image from a thumbnail) the frames. I am saying this because I see soo much hype, fanboyism and denial about what FSR is and what it will remain to be, I see people dumping on Nvidia - but...you'll just be disappointed. People expect it to get better over time - and I'm sure it will...slightly - but it will NEVER match DLSS, simply because it's not doing the heavy lifting. Please understand this and have realistic expectations. This is not a "G-Sync vs Free-Sync" and not a "PhysX" again - this is a completely different situation. What you should, as fans, be doing is you should be pushing for AMD to integrate fast AI processing into their GPUs so you can also take advantage of the technology. Until that happens - FSR will keep lacking detail, even if you get a performance boost, same way as you do when simply lowering the resolution. I am also disappointed that Jay is spreading misinformation on this topic. As a 3D artist I use AI upscaling technologies all the time, pretty much on a daily basis... When the method became widely available and we started using it - holy crap did the quality go up! Suddenly we went from telling clients "if we upscale your low res image it'll look crap" to "yeah, we can make it look much better". I've processed a LOT of images using both methods and there's just no competition to AI image inference. The same applies to DLSS vs FSR.

You know it really does depend on the developer. Like I've actually seen Total Warhammer 2 and 40k Inquisitor Martyr and each has these horrible jagged edges at even 1440p. Meanwhile at a lower resolution it basically doesn't look that much different and I think that's the developer's fault but dunno why. The amount of jaggies was so awful. You can get pretty used to a lower resolution but yeah, basically if you're actually building a new system and got a good card somehow I think you should at least get a 1440p monitor, and if not, you may as well use a lower end OEM office machine tier upgraded with cheaper Maxwell or GCN or whatever cards to power a sub-1080p display like I do. It should work practically on any modern card produced in the last decade or so. They just used GTX 1060 as an example because it was the most popular GPU on Steam. The only thing you should be sad about is whether Nvidia would want to optimize the FSR tech for their cards. AMD said that they have _enabled_ this tech on any hardware but have _optimized_ the quality only on their Radeon GPUs which is understandable. It's a bit naive to expect that AMD will do the whole work for Nvidia, especially with AMD's limited resources which are much smaller than Nvidia's. Nvidia has to do some tweaking to FSR on their side and on their GPUs in order to bring it to the level of quality we saw in the Godfall demo ran on Radeon. So don't expect the FSR quality on GeForce to look the same as FSR on Radeon on release.

Hi Jay, just so you know, DLSS 2.0 no longer requires high resolution images to learn how to upscale images. We have been researching this extensively where I work. This used to be the case with the first version (requires high Res reference images for the game you're playing.) But deep learning has gotten so good in 2.0, you no longer have to feed these images to your GPU, it can upscale in real time without consulting a library.

Same here. 3700x and an RX 5700. Bought my RX 5700 for €290 two years ago which was an absolute steal - sold my 1060 for it and took the plunge. To say it had some issues was an understatement... The performance was great, lots of improvements over my 6GB 1060, but the drivers... Oh boy. I was relatively lucky according to what other people were experiencing and I still had at least a few crashes a month, probably 8 or so at most. I've tried so many things - disconnecting my second and third screen, reinstalling the card, reinstalling drivers, etc. Nothing worked. I was at the hands of AMD's software engineers to fix the issues. Luckily, they did. I rarely experience issues now, although I'm still uncertain what caused the earlier issues. Some people say it has to do with the memory timing due to some cards having memory from two different brands on one card, which was fixable with a bios flash - don't feel like doing that in todays GPU market though :P They've convinced me to stay and I'm now trying to upgrade to an RX 6800 for MSRP... Its tough, but I think I might be able to do it.

@TheUltimateBlooper
@TheUltimateBlooper 3 жыл бұрын
Ok, let's get some facts straight, because there's just too much false expectation around... Nvidia's G-Sync was a technological push during the time when the VESA variable refresh rate standard was not a thing. I'm saying this because I see sooooo much hype, fanboyism and denial about what FSR is and what it will remain to be, I see people dumping on Nvidia - but...you'll just be disappointed. People expect it to get better over time - and I'm sure it will...slightly - but it will NEVER match DLSS, simply because it's not doing the heavy lifting. Please understand this and have realistic expectations. This is not a "G-Sync vs Free-Sync" again - this is a completely different situation.

7:04 "And not even be able to tell the difference between the two". That's a bold statement considering we haven't actually seen the quality first-hand yet. The reason why this is supported by all cards is because this is a simple spatial upscaling technique that people have tried for decades and has never really been used.

Could the scalp-pocalypse be partly caused by the overall lack in low-mid end gpus on the current gen market?

Part of it yes! The other issue is that everyone now thinks they need a 3070/3080 when in reality most people would be better off with a lower end card, but not much of a choice currently.

Secondary market is usually swayed by relative performance, the scalp-pocalypse would be more or less the same since the low-mid GPUs preform close to the high-end GPUs of last gen. So they would be scalped for about the same as the last gen high end cards are now

But FSR isn't really even remotely the same as DLSS. FSR is a post-processing effect much like FXAA. It doesn't even use any DL/AI, so it doesn't actually reconstruct lost data. They're not even in the same league. DLSS is Nvidia exclusive because it REQUIRES dedicated DL/ML cores to operate in parallel to the rendering pipeline. Something that AMD cards don't even have. I dunno. FSR is cool and all, but drawing equivalence to DLSS is off putting.

Technically behind the scenes yes they are very different. But at the end of the day it is a tech that allows end users to gain performance by rendering at lower resolutions than upscaling it. Also if you look at the AMD patent both linear and non linear upscaler is still DL neural networks. But they are generically trained and do not need the game engine to provide motion vectors (not temporal). So in theory it requires very little work from the game devs to get working. Newer version of DLSS is also generically trained and do not require game specific training. But it does require motion vectors because it creates a new frame based on movement of objects (temporal). The main point with FSR is it works with any card RX500 , Pascal or higher without proprietary tensor cores. Literally AMD just extended the life of a lot of older video cards. And if you don’t know why this is important you shouldn’t be commenting.

AMD didn't make a DLSS equivalent, it made an alternative for the resolution scaling techniques that were already implemented in most modern games.

This video is nuts. JZ bashing Nvidia, claiming some grand victory for AMD on something he has no idea about.. something that no third party has evaluated. Sure, it could be the most amazing thing ever. Sure, there is a possibility it's so awesome that it beats Nvidia AI tensor cores. But that's a tall order. Seems more unlikely than likely. Especially considering the example AMD had during their presentation, where it was....not amazing looking, not at all. Jay Z is seriously talking sone nonsense when he acts like Nvidia could back port their fancy AI upscaling to cards without tensor cores. It's fundamentally/entirely built around tensor cores. This is total nonsensical

Well DLSS does more than you are talking about though, it legitemately introduces "new details" that wouldn't even be present at the native resolution, it looks really good(from what i can tell without having a gpu that can do it) and it adds more level of detail it's like whatever resolution you run it at plus the cherry on top

Well to be fair you are wrong it runs it at a lower resolution and upscales it to a higher one and it's a lot better than Fsr cause they have dedicated compute units but Fsr is on gtx 10 series

With Intel (slowly) trying to up their GPU approach, on one hand I am a little surprised that AMD made this open-source right out of the gate. However, I see this as a long-term play on their end to convince consumers to keep coming back to them, and if their claims are even half true, it's a lot to get excited about.

Even if FSR is rough at launch, like how DLSS 1.0 was, the fact that both major consoles this generation are both AMD-powered and both consoles are planned to heavily utilize FSR for more graphically-intense games in the future, means that improvements to FSR will be coming thick and fast and it’ll match DLSS 2.0 in fairly short order.
