Mr policeman misunderstood what is/ is not a protected site. Standing outside a build with a gun does not make it a protected site under UK legislation. Likewise you can stand outside protected sites in a public place taking photos, the issue is being ‘on’ a protected site and filming. The Uk tourist industry loves tourists filming Buckingham Palace and picking up some memorabilia on the way, lining someone’s pockets. Even the Royal family are in on it, opening the doors to the Palace a few Months of the year to increase the weight of their piggy banks. Could you imagine the police asking people outside the Palace why they are filming? I can’t think of a response I would give without making the officer sound stupid!

It's not really protected at the point of being seen or photographed. Makes the whole idea dumb to talk about. The actual thing going on is prevention. Most people don't think much any more.

Just for information ‘protected site’ terminology is commonly used by the MOD for designated sites where laws exist to prohibit things such as this however it is very much a case of if you are on public property then you are more than entitled to film.

There are some auditors here in the US that are working in the same vein, to protect the rights that seem to be forgotten and stomped everyday. Rights are much less appreciated by those who swear an oath to protect them than the individuals they exist to protect...and the ones who do swear to protect them are the most likely to despise them and be offended by exercising them . Very good work. I hope to get back to the UK some day.
