I use ASL. I have been mistaken as deaf on several occassions. It can be funny listening to people that assume i'm deaf says things about me. Three workers in my Dad's factory are deaf. Us four usually go for lunch together. We sign to each other, that is why they get mistaken. One even said, "too bad this guy is deaf, otherwise i can introduce my daughter to him".

In middle school I had a similar assignment but it was more high tech you had to change the baby’s diaper with magnets and couldn’t allow the babys head to shake or be left without support for too long. My brother found me passed out on the floor from being so exhausted still in the changing position. He woke me up I got in bed and had to do it again 2 hours later. It was actually a great assignment thinking back on it but during the time I thought f that and will not have a baby until I know I’m completely ready.

Story 5: I had something kinda similar happen with me when I was in my late teens. Due to being homeschooled all my life, I didn't really have a dating life like most people, and didn't have my first boyfriend till I was 17. At the time, I had thought he was the perfect one, and I didn't want to be with anyone else. My parents however kept pressing and pushing me to break things off with him to see for myself that there's other fish in the sea, and not just him and wanted me to date other people around me first, before settling on one person and getting serious with them. However, due to being homeschooled all my life, not working at the time, and having a baby face (I kept being told that I looked like a 12 year old a lot), and not really knowing a lot of people, my social circle was pretty small, and dating pool even smaller. My parents eventually did tell me to stop seeing him after less than a year cause he was having a hard time finding a job at the time and because of that, they considered him nothing more than bum, when he wasn't.

The Third story kinda has me a little bit miffed. Mostly due to the fact that sure maybe it wasn't gaslighting, or intended in such a way, but here's how it looks. He goes up to her, and talks about how good his friend is, and the fact that he likes her. She then says she wants to focus on her career, and doesn't want a relationship at that moment. He THEN uses said information to bide his time, and give her the space, so that before his friend has a chance to try again. He shoots his shot, and succeeds. So yeah I can see why his friend is kinda pissed off. I can't see a situation where he wouldn't be. My only thought is... If he truly was your friend. You would have told him that you liked her too, so that he knows where you stand on the matter, but you didn't. You stayed quiet, and all of a sudden he's supposed to accept that his friend that's been giving him advice just suddenly has the relationship that he wanted? You are either dense, or purposefully negligent with your so called "Friendships" Whilst you knew she only needed maybe a couple more years, before she was ready. He probably didn't. You're not going to tell me that he never brought her up again after the initial rejection, and then all of a sudden his friend is now dating the girl that he had feelings for. (Albeit probably lust considering the maturity of how they handled the situation...) Might not be a jerk, but you sure as heck are not a good friend for it either.

The problem is that it's a rejection that was also hinting at the possibility of something else down the line (Basically friendzoned) Until she felt ready to make her choice. Which is fine. She can make whatever choice she wants. Thing is... He knew that once she felt comfortable with her new career. He could swoop in, and ask her out, while the other guy was waiting, and biding his time to do the very same. This is why you tell your friend that you like the same girl, because then you can chose to back down, or compete, and not feel cheated by someone that's supposed to be your friend. As for the gaslighting part. The guy could have easily walked up to her, and been like. "My friend totally likes you, and wants to take you out. He's a really good guy! And has been talking about taking you to X place" And she could have responded that she doesn't really like that place, and wasn't interested in a date, so the main guy now found out that she doesn't like a certain place whilst also passively making his buddy look bad for suggesting that location. (I've seen these tactics deployed on several occasions You lot need to stop playing games.) That's why on a certain level I could see why his buddy thinks he's been gaslit.

My daughter got told to "quit throwing gang signs" when she was doing sign language on the bus. But not by a Karen, by members of the gang who felt she was disrespecting them. Thankfully there was a girl on the bus that knew she was hearing impared and it was sign who could explain to them. But it got tense because that wanted to "beat her ass anyway" for most of the ride. But the good semaritian calmed them down. After that I drove her to school so she didn't have to take the bus. But they had to take the bus another time on a school trip . Her new hearing aids played music directly into the ear canal and she was just practicing signing songs. So once again the whole gang sign thing came up again. But this was early in 2020 when there were lots of press conferences and concerts with ASL translators. So more people were aware of what it was. Those that knew made fun of the gang boys thinking it was 'gang signs'. An ASL club was born.

For story 2. Honestly it is not your fault that this person came in to the lobby. I worked both evening and night audit hotel shift for 3 years. In that time I have had more than one situation that got out of hand because people don't tell you everything up front. All you can do is try to handle it in a calm professional way. I once had a homeless person ask if they could use the bathroom. In my defense he looked like he could have been a normal person. After a few minutes I calmly asked him to leave or I would have no choice but to call the police. He packed up and left without much trouble. this goes to show that we all have a relapse in judgement from time to time. hind site is 20 20.

Fun Fact: ASL is a combination of French SL and Martha's Vinyard SL, the latter of which was created naturally by the people of the island because back then, a ressesive gene made about 1/4 of all people living in Martha's Vineyard profoundly deaf. That's not really the case anymore though, because when the first Deaf school opened up in America teaching FSL, most of the deaf folks from Martha's Vineyard enrolled in it and mingled with folks who lost their hearing through injuries or diseases, which weeded out the ressesive gene. Also, the reason the Deaf school even opened in the first place was because a wealthy man had a daughter who was profoundly deaf (not from Martha's Vineyard) so he went to France to find people who could teach FSL to deaf Americans at the school he opened up for his daughter and other deaf children and adults.

The last story I think the guy hasn't actually found the one. I'm in the same position, except I have never hesitated to say yes when my husband wanted to get married. But maybe it's because not only do I have no dating history, but neither does he, so we're both just as blind. And I established after a week together I wanted kids. I apologized and said I'm not trying to freak him out, but I wanted to establish what we both wanted in life as early as possible so that emotions didn't create problems for us later. I am not willing to compromise on what I want but I'm not willing to make someone else compromise either as it's not fair. So we established a future after barely knowing each other, and we became very close very fast. Ever since then we have been on the same page on everything and don't fight unless there's some miscommunication or our families make it happen somehow. But our fights always end in us making up. Long story short, I have never questioned if I was right for settling down so quick. I can see us being old and getting to brag about never having to fight to find the right person, and that makes me super happy. If you don't feel this way then I think that's a sign that theres not enough love in the relationship for you to make that leap.

I know it's not the same as being deaf but almost two years ago I had my hearing checked and found out I needed hearing aids. Before that I had to have everyone repeat themselves multiple times (which i knew was annoying especially since it's my biggest pet peeve) and even then I usually ended guessing at what they said and said they were mumbling. When I first put them on I was shocked at the way things sounded and it makes me wonder how long my hearing was going bad if the sound of traffic (and even flushing the toilet) was shocking. There is a MAJOR drop in volume when I take my hearing aids out at night to charge them.

Last story. I really thought he was a jerk at first, having the wonderful relationship and just wanting to explore other options... Then as the story progressed and travel and children came into the picture, I realized you are not the jerk... It sounds like you have different goals in life and it may not work out...
