I would like to say that it wasn't just the local people, but it was especially the Native Hawaiians who did not want this cult on ANY of our islands. Also, to those who practice the religion our ancestors did, Pele (pronounced "peh-leh") cannot reincarnate because she has always existed and has never had a physical form that can die in order to, you know, reincarnate. And she's also not simply a fire goddess; in addition to fire Pele is the goddess of volcanoes, death and rebirth, and patron goddess of the lands. I'm not surprised a cult would appropriate her in such a way, considering 1) its a cult and 2) non-Hawaiian people the world over think it's okay to just do that. Nor am I surprised that we're not the only indigenous people they've disrespected! I disagree with the violence that may have been perpetrated by the Native Hawaiian protesters, but I can almost guarantee it was an emotional response to having racial slurs hurled at them in addition to having our culture bastardized by a cult. Anyway, excellent video on such a bizarre topic.

It's sad as hell. I honestly thought they'd get some manslaughter charges for negligence or something, especially after admitting that she wanted to go to the hospital but they told her no and just gave her more liquor and silver. I don't know if you watched the documentary, but Jason was 100% on Meth, though Amy was incredibly pissy about it and kicked him out over the use. The whole video with him sitting outside that tent, crying out an apology is from that incident. So you were right on in at least one case (and I don't believe for one second he just stopped using, just like that with no aid, support or - as far as we see - physical signs of withdrawal. If so, he either only occasionally used or was like his first and only time he'd taken Meth which seeing how into the cult he was the fact that he was still compelled to leave for days to indulge makes me think his use was fairly common.) PS: Rome, Ga? My guess for the meth capitol.

@Redwood Rebelgirl Aileen Wuornos was dealing with traumas and maybe pre-existing psychosis due to conditions or an undiagnosed inherited mental illness. At least there is compassion somewhere for that. Even so, people dealing with mental illness are often abused, and do not become the "monsters" one might expect based on how they are presented in media, especially a lot of movies. It seemed "Monster", starring Charlize Theron, tried to offer a different perspective to the audience. I'm not sure that can be done for Amy. She was surrounded by enablers and fellow abusers, but she still made choices that oppressed others. (Someone else, Fairyface Jace, mentioned we don't hear much of the local Hawaiian perspective. I think they have a good point, there. Also, it's not just a cultural icon her group appropriated, but they endangered the future of the island by ignoring mitigation rules. The Pele claim was part of her reasoning why she couldn't get Covid-19, (a zoonotic and airborne pandemic. It was hard not to wonder if a serious fever was burning her up at that point, from her journey- especially if she refused wearing masks the whole way and was exposed to it.) Instead of feeding those delusions of grandeur or defensive self-righteousnous the cult members might cling to by centering a movie on her or the group, I'd like to learn more about how people in that surrounding community felt, and chose to respond to the situation. (This is within the context of how "separation sickness" effected Hawaiians when leprosy was brought to the islands over a hundred years ago. People were sent to Molokai for the rest of their lives. Generational trauma seemed likely. They may not want to, and have a right not to discuss it, though.)

So glad to be a Jennonite. I hope I spelt that right. I’ve been binge watching your videos, and they’ve helped me with a lot of the church trauma I went through as a kid. Also, it has helped me with my beliefs as I am more spiritual rather than religious now, so that has led to a lot of identity issues for me. Religion was my identity for so long, and it feels so good to base my identity on multiple different things now. Thanks Jen!

I wonder if cult leaders ever discuss other cult leaders, kind of like fanon canon. "I'm God." "So what was your relationship with Jim Jones like, then?" It's kind of creepy seeing how blue "Mom" got, looks like silver nitrate poisoning. I also love how indignant they are that people disagree with them. "It's so wrong that they said we were invading them! Like, that hurt our feelings so much!"
