Tw: sexual abuse You probably don’t even know about this. So there was a puppet show Shane Dawson did with fine bros who if you don’t know, literally the creator of KIDS REACT. It was called hey it’s milly. It was based off an 8 year old girl (the puppet) who was OBSESSED with Shane and a lot of times would say super inappropriate things such as f*ck me to SHANE and then ask what it meant. There was also a skit I saw where he had another puppet and pretended to r*pe milly with it. Another clip implied she was sexually abused by her dad. It’s all so so disturbing

A lot of people think " Well I don't believe POC are below me, so I'm not racist. " but there are different forms of racism and people have different opinions so it can get subjective really fast based on different people's opinion. It's why it's such a hard subject. What he did is undeniably racist, but I think if anything he is racially tone deaf. Tone deaf in general. Shock value humor and the things that were popular about a decade ago that were influenced on us to make us think is funny? Like South Park, The Chapelle Show, some Mad Tv skits wouldn't fly today. But, when you've got a lot of Tyler Perry movies still floating around in recent history you can't pretend like that isn't still being appropriated with harmful stereotypes, etc.

Yeah probably a bit of both. He clearly wasn't raised with the best of values, so he's had a lot to work out and those things take time. But at the age he is now, he has had A LOT OF TIME to work things out and it's getting obvious he isn't really trying - he'd rather stick to his guns and try to normalize his own behavior. I recently re-listened to a podcast he did in 2014 with comedian Bo Burnham, where they have a conversation specifically about offensive comedy/edgy humor, and they both agree and bond over the fact that they've moved away from blatant shock humor and grown as comedians. (Yes, this was the same year as Shane's movie Not Cool came out...) So at the time Shane was definitely very aware of what he was doing and that it was considered Not Cool (sorry) by most people - he just did it anyway. While hilariously lying Bo Burnham straight in the face so they could have a bonding moment.

Hi so growing up off of youtube, I watched all of Shane’s content as a kid (I’m now 22). When I was 12 and 13 I thought all these jokes were funny too even though I myself am black. I thought how he treated Shana was funny, and everything he said was a joke. But at the same time when I was a child I was deeply ashamed of my blackness. I tried so hard to remove myself from black culture and I didn’t really understand why at the time but looking back I definitely think it’s from the content I was consuming. I’m not blaming Shane in full but it’s the bigger picture of antiblackness within media that he contributed to that ultimately made me feel how I did. Because making fun of black people is just that normal, I didn’t want to be black or even be associate with my own people. When I say Shane Dawson is a monster, he didn’t just engineer a whole generation of racist kids... he also helped to create internalized hatred in black children along with everything else he’s done to children.

There are many people who talk about Shane's sexual trauma being the catalyst for this behavior. While I understand that everyone deals with trauma differently, I truly believe that does not excuse behavior that causes the same harm that you have received. As a future licensed counselor, I really hope he gets more help that he needs and takes a break from social media. So sad. Also thanks for putting this video together, it sheds light on important parts of his KZbin career that definitely need to be addressed.

I know this isn't really a controversy per se, but I found the mini-series he did about his high school classmate who murdered his uncle to be very strange and tasteless. I was a fan of Shane's at the time but even then I thought "yikes why isn't he getting permission from the family to talk about this?" He somehow found a way to make the murder about himself lmao. I know it probably did affect him at the time because it happened when he was still in high school and it was a person he thought looked out for him but still... I feel like he didn't really have a right to publish a series about a very serious event and then gain views and money off of someone else's tragedy and life. If I was a family member of the victim I would feel uncomfortable with someone who barely knew my family member making assumptions and theories about what happened. Then again the news and tabloids do that sort of thing all the time. I feel like it might be different for Shane because he sort of acted as if he was more connected to the event than he really was? I don't know if anyone else has ever pointed this out or talked about it online but yeah, I figured I would mention it here.

Its funny (but really just incredibly sad) that while making his movie, the actors left when they realized the film Shane pitched to them as a comedy, was filled with things that shouldn't ever be joked about...the actors left because they weren't willing to sacrifice their morals for a role...and Shade didn't understand that AT ALL. Nothing is off limits to Shane, and that's scary. There are things you should never say in any context, around anyone. But he has no limits, anything at all is 'funny' to him. I really hope his family and friends start to hold him accountable..if Ryland is smart he would be moving out right about now.. Anyone who makes inappropriate 'jokes' about children, animals, minorities...anyone who thinks that's okay needs serious help.

i see edgy humour as mocking your own situation. for example, i'll mock my anxiety, i'll mock my chest size and the shape of my body, but by doing that i'm only "insulting" myself and my experience. however, the moment someone tries to pass off racism, homophobia, transphobia, misogyny, or any kind of ignorant and prejudiced belief as edgy humour when they do not understand the struggles of that group, it's not humour, it's just perpetuating offensive stereotypes and hurting people.
