"Does that really make sense? Probably not. I don't care"... our opinions shan't align :) If nothing makes sense then it becomes a series of random events, like watching Buckaroo Banzai - and to be honest like an awful lot of RTD Who. I would have loved the idea of the community a decade ago, I had to just shut out fandom because it was destroying my fun. I loved it 2010-2017 (having been a bit iffy on it 2005-9) and there was so much online negativity. It's a good idea, for someone else. I couldn't join as I'm now the kind of person I had to shut out. But honestly, it was a terrible script. I never really love an idea of something - you want something unique and memorable ask a five year old because they'll not think it through. I will think it through, subconsciously - can't turn it off. I don't need a lot to suspend disbelief, and if I can think of an unspoken work around I'll be happy - but basic logical issues like in Dot and Bubble and the finale make it impossible to enjoy.

The reveal of Ruby’s mom was very underwhelming considering the build up to it. However, the scene when she meets her and the following ‘goodbye for now’ with the Doctor were some of the best moments of the series, so makes me slightly more forgiving for it.

One question that's not been asked or Answered is - during the Giggle - the 15th Doctor created a 2nd Tardis from the original - does this mean there are two Sutekhs now? Or did he jump from one to the other?? Does this mean DAvid Tennant's Tardis has it's own Sutekh still attached to it???

Even though it makes me feel even older, Jason but Pyramids of Mars was 49 not 39 years ago. I feel that in my opinion that it may have done with the humanoid Sutekh, even if it was a stand in responding to Gabriel Woolfs pre-recorded lines. It will be interesting to see how Ruby fits into the Series 2/15/41 narrative

Hi Jason - I'm probably similar age as you but on the other side of the pond in Boston (though I lived in London for two years). I grew up primarily with Tom Baker in the 70s/80s on our public television stations and then later caught up with the other Doctors. Just discovered your channel - looks terrific. Your idea for a new forum sounds great. Like everyone, I have my own preferences and opinions (not heavy handed) but generally find something to like in each of the eras. Thanks for your videos!

Jason , lovely piece.. Really pleased you liked it. I would put Sutekh's reveal as one of my favourite moments since the show came back in 2005. I knew it was coming back, RTD had seeded things about that throughout the series. After Devils Chord's " 1980 Sarah, if you want to get off?" tonal call back , coupled with the "one who waits" messaging, sealed it for me. I really loved the re-design of Sutekh, but not surprised, although a bit disappointed it's gone down so badly online with some. Ah well. However I didn't care so much about how Ruby's story was resolved. Demystifying Ruby was not the problem for me, and the abiding message: the ordinary is the extraordinary ,should be celebrated. But wow, there were lots of issues with how that was handled.

I think almost point for point you had the same reaction as me. I agree loved that her mum was just ordinary. And Mel has been so good since she's been back. I'm also happy Susan granddaughter didn't show up at all. There's too much going on in the story. She needs her own seperate one down the road if at all. I will admit when Kate went I weren't happy lmao so was so happy when cherry and Mrs flood got it, then I knew they'd all be safe. Was so happy. All cherry wants is a cup of tea haha. Mrs flood looking on point at the end. Glad she wasn't just some minion as well, I felt she was always meant for bigger things. But I don't necessarily think bad. 8 episodes was never going to be enough, but we got such great variety between, no 2 alike. It felt like an anthology show. I'm excited for what's to come.

Also, do think the new doctor is really good you can tell he's having fun in the role at the end of the devils cord.

Adored this season. A fresh reinvention of the show. Who with a twist (literally). Amazing and charismatic lead actors. Boy, what performances. The finale was superb. Always hard to deliver on people’s expectations with finale’s, let alone with all the things in the mix. Who fans debated so much and came up with their own takes, but of course they aren’t making the show. This always leads to criticism. People don’t allow the show to do what it wants to do or tell stories in its way. Sure, I get it and there were things to wrap my head around and repeated viewings have helped as it gets better and better with each one. As a teenager and lover of the Davison years, I totally agree with your comparison, Jodie too. Thanks for reviewing. Refreshing. So bored with negative ‘fans’ who constantly diss and pull everything apart because it doesn’t match with their ideas, but then many have a very tired and traditional idea on what Doctor Who should be and struggle to accept change, yet at the same time talking about how the show needs to change. So odd. So I appreciate your comments and totally agree.

I kind of wish certain scenes were in a different order, but a lot of folks, even people I typically agree with and who aren't doomsayers in any way, are saying they might be done with Doctor Who because they were so disappointed with this finale. I found Emprie of Death was fine. Not so found of Sutekh siting in the TARDIS the whole time but it is funny thinking about all the stuff he's been through. Jack clung on, it was painted pink, multiple tardises next to each other, the tardis shrinking. Yaz and the Doctor eatjng icecream sitting on the TARDIS. Also i think people letting tjeir fan theroies get ahead of them adds to the disappointment of reveals. Mrs Flood is definitely a brand new character. So i bet some will whinge it isn't the Rani or something. Its never the Rani. I think she might be the boss meep mentioned. Whoever the boss is they are a new character. Fan theroies really love to be like this mysterious thing is definitely something we've seen before. When it usually is something new.

I understand why the Empire of Death was what it was. There were so many clever directions it could've gone in that were lost. The cohesion or collusion of these Gods, Susan, Maybe Ruby could've been related to the Master? I was hoping for a little connection to the old Turn left episode (with respect to the Isaac Newton Mavity thing being a potential second timeline). What I got was a Thanos liquid paper wipe. I love Nu Who but dislike any romance (just have tension). I'm enjoying it because I've my John Nathan Turner hat on rather than Barry Letts. I want a new Candyman show. He was a tasty character.

I don't get this whole doctor who needs a rest. Why? Just because it has been back for 20 years doesn't mean it can't be good again. Also if a bunch of old fans (kids during the classic series so 40+) don't like nuwho but you have more younger fans who do like the direction I see no problem. I feel like some people discuss doctor who like it's still 1987 in terms of stuff like the ratings, it needs a rest. The world is very different. Fans really struggle with understanding casual viewers. They can't easily imagine how the causal views who. I see not need for a rest. Times change. If you don't like the modern show don't watch it. Jason , I’m glad you liked it and l’m glad that there are some people who are still enjoying Dr Who, but I’m sorry I just don’t think the stories have been that great since Capaldi regenerated into Whittaker. I clocked off after Jodie’s first season and thought I’d give Gatwa a go since RT Davis returned,but unfortunately I don’t see any improvement. Russell seems to litter the season with mystery boxes, which are either red herrings or left unexplained . This is not good story telling. For instance what the hell was the snow that kept appearing around Ruby. Or what song did the Maestro detect within Ruby. And why did the Doctor say time had changed when he went back to Ruby’s past. All unanswered. And maybe I’m an old fart ( turning 55 in a month, but a fan since the 70’s) but why would Sutekh really give a damn about Ruby or her mother. This is a God who wants to destroy everything and he’s concerned about Ruby who can’t find her mother. Surely Clara was a more mysterious conundrum than Ruby. And the reset with everyone come back to life at the end of this story is typical RTD. Just consume and don’t think. But hey that’s me and maybe I’m not the target audience anymore. I still love classic Who and everything up to Capaldi , who was one of my favourite Doctors, but everything after that seems to be an alternative universe spin off. At least I have my blu rays and big finish audios.

Peter Capaldi was the last Doctor for me, even though the series was already on the slide during his tenure. Now, it's car crash television. Mr. Davies seems to be worlds worst writer all of a sudden. Rapid diversity and inclusion have developed all over the show like an outbreak of alien measles or Axon mumps. Either way, the show is a pile of shite. Russell is only doing what the BBC/Disney pay him to do. That is to make certain the show appeals to LGBTQ community and nothing else. Gone are the days when social agendas were background scenery in story development. Now it's like doing a full frontal with bells and whistles. For me, Doctor Who is now dead. Been a fan since 1978. I shall never venture forth into the TARDIS again.
@jarnopp
@jarnopp 7 ай бұрын
Well, if you see diversity and inclusion, or LGBTQ elements as negative aspects, then I can't say that the TARDIS will miss you. Disliking the show for the writing or stories is of course fine, but that's just such a weird point of view.

I'm more mixed on the finale, but I don't think it sucked. And there is definitely more that I liked than disliked. Overall, I think it chooses to sacrifice some plot or story elements in favor of those emotional beats, which with the exception of the reveal of Ruby's biological mom, hits very well. I the problems with the finale tie more into the problems with the season overall. The shorter season didn't lend itself to flushing out the fundamentals well like some of the exposition, dynamic between Doctor and companion, seeing the range of solutions from the fifteenth doctor that we would have gotten with more episodes (especially since we have two episodes where the Doctor is less present). This kinda left the finale with more to do imo and the writers having to make decisions on what gets elaborated upon. I like the experimentation but it feels like I didn't know this doctor or companion well enough yet. I also dislike the Who-bashing as it feels more like a distraction than anything else. And to those people I would encourage them to take a break, chill, come back when there's a new doctor and catch up on the backlog. I find that my impression of the Chibnall era was much more neutral when I inadvertently took a break from the show due to life and coming back to it this year.

I found this video really frustrating and I normally love your content! Sorry, Jason. I'm a decades long subscriber to DWM and the only thing that niggles me is their unfaltering praise and positivity for absolutely everything, there are rarely any shades of grey or acknowledgement of anything that didn't work. I get it, DWM is the flagship Doctor Who publication so they need to make that editorial choice. The thing is, I 100% agree with everything you highlighted about these episodes! Loved TLoRS and the epic cliffhanger, loved the moped chase, loved Kate's speech, adored the Remembered TARDIS, loved the scene with the Kind Woman, I was satisfied with the reveal about Ruby's mum, I have been really impressed with Ncuti and Milly all season etc. etc. But these are a collection of highlights, what left me feeling empty and unfilled at the end was the really muddled or complete lack of connective tissue between these elements. To quote 10/14 I spent a lot of EoD shouting what? What! WHAT!? at the screen. When RTD himself admits that there was "complete narrative collapse" with the teleport scene then I think a reviewer can admit that there were elements that didn't work or didn't make sense. Yes there are trolls and really nasty people online who seem to have missed the fundamental themes of Doctor Who, but there is also a lot of healthy discourse and honest criticism. I understand the need for a 'safe space' away from the toxicity but if that means living in a 'Dot and Bubble' world of positivity with no nuance then it's not for me. It can be rough out here but I'm hopeful one day a random man, dressed randomly as a monk will arrive and ask me for my spoon before I die. Happy times and places x

Hehe, thanks for sharing your thoughts in such a nice and balanced way, Andy. The thing with me is, I have neither the time nor the inclination to reallllly dig deep into narrative, plot and all that stuff. It's just not something that naturally preoccupies me, which is odd given that I'm a writer myself! I think, with Who, I've always just loved the bones of it, and that's the mode I prefer to stay in, rather than digging out my magnifying glass. Full respect to anyone who does, though. I can understand your concern about a 'safe space' community being a weird positive bubble (ha) but it won't be that at all. Members can absolutely express not having liked or enjoyed an episode - but the difference is they won't be jumping all over each other's opinions and being rude or horrendous to each other. Respect is the key word. That and a certain lack of rage. :D Judging by your thoughtful comment, you'd fit in a treat! 😊👊

I've been more of a classic Who fan than NuWho. But this story irritated me which is rare. I knew they would do the whole predictable NuWho trope of everyone comes back to life again - seen in series 1, 3 and implied in series 4. If Sutekh destroyed everything in 2024 the events of 2045 would never happened seeing that Sutekh infected every time line the TARDIS went meaning the timeline of the mad prime minister would of been infected and destroyed. So according to RTD all time lords even classic Doctors bi generated including TARDIS meaning there are multiple Sutekh running around?? The total dismissive attitude towards the 4th Doctor was shocking. Sutekh had multiple times to destroy Ruby also in Pyramids he had no interest in what humans felt or thought hated all mankind yet he suddenly he's intreasted in Rudys mum - who would be dead anyway. Made zero sense, also we know how Ruby got her name it was explained in the Christmas special. Saying hahaha Ruby is just normal why do all the Magical snow and Maestro feared her?? Typical RTD an ok first part then it all falls apart in the second part. 😂 Killing that entire universe off and leaving it dead would of been OK seeing the Toymaker and I'm sure said he's altered the universe meaning it maybe not the real universe but a mirror one created by the Toymaker? If he didn't That's what I would of done 🤣

Didn't like the first two episodes but enjoyed the rest of the series. Still a bit confused about some aspects.

Didn't watch any of it, not watched since Capaldi left and those terrible 60th specials. I didn't want a female doctor. He was my hero. I gave Tennant (14th) a try but could see it was going in a different direction. Was let down by RTD. Not watched any of (15th) episodes, and it was the best choice I made. I have been a fan since 81, I don't want to see the doctor kissing men and prancing around. Could you imagine Tom Baker doing that? It's supposed to be a sci-fi programme, not a sex fantasy series. It's lost its heart of the show. It's probably gone forever now. If you enjoy this, then good for you. I will stick to the wonderful classic era. Where he is still my hero, my Doctor.

"Prancing around", Lindsey? Hmm, oh dear. Did you not mind the Doctor kissing Rose and other women, then?

@jarnopp I didn't mind the Rose story as it was done tastefully. Not hey, watch me I'm kissing men now! Its not needed. If you were to write a story, would you go out on agendas like RTD or write a great sci-fi story? As that's all I want a story without all this pantomime stuff in between.

It was soooo CRAP!!!! I don't know where to start? The memory Tardis?, Sutekh being stupidly defeated?, Rose Noble doing absolutely NOTHING. The first part of the final was great though

Glad you mentioned Millie Gibson's acting - I've been enjoying her "natural" style from the outset, and imho she carried this season slightly moreso than Ncuti Gatwa, fine though he is. BTW - sepulchral is pronounced "se-PUL-kral" = "relating to a grave/tomb" (sepulchre).

I think this season was a great improvement over anything from the Chibnal era but that being said we're still far off the mark of the first RTD era in quality. That being said I think the season finale improves the episodes that came before in the season. Still of the mindset they should nuke the entire Chibnal era that was horrid
