I am a painter, and I have heard many times that painting Shellac over odors such as pet stains and smoke is the only thing that will hold it down. You might want to look into that before you put new wood over the old and discover that you still have pet smells!

I’m so proud of the physical labor that you guys are able to do!! That wouldn’t have been possible how many years ago! My husband lost about 50 lbs after finding out about keto through KZbin. He also had a hip replacement because we were hit by a drunk/high teen. When he is tired after doing something hard and physical he always says “two years ago I couldn’t have done this! Thanks Lord that I am able to do ____!” Thanks for your encouragement in the keto life 😊

wondering if that cubby would not be a good addition to the laundry - making it a place to put your towels and also all of your cleaning supplies - maybe a place to hang the clothes when taking them out of the dryer. The bottom part could open into the bathroom (where the actual washer and dryer is - and the top portion open over the W & D - maybe even without a door - for the laundry. If you don't like that idea - possibly shelves above the W&D and a hanging rack from wall to wall above them. When you have a W&D in the home - it is really a gift - you fill find that out - but, you don't have the whole garage to spread out in - so, a bit of planning there is good.

I really enjoyed this video! First you transformed your lives with Keto and now you are transforming your new home into exactly what you need for this season in your life! I love that you used your Sabbath rest at the end. We renovated parts of an old farmhouse years ago and this process is a marathon, not a sprint. R & R is really vital to be sane when it’s all “done”.

Yup. Lots of houses don't make sense. John was constantly asking, "What were they thinking?!" When we were remodeling, our stick built. Almost the complete house was NOt up to code!. Then we had similar finds in backs of cupboards like needles, etc. etc. 😅

In some states, a room cannot legally be called a bedroom if it doesn't have a closet. Check with a good real estate agent.
@Dan-ni7sq3 ай бұрын
Call the local building inspector they would be more reliable than a real estate agent. Actually before you buy a house it's a good idea to call the local building and zoning office to find out what restrictions you might have to deal with.

Dear Joe and Rachel. Congrats. I pray this will be a place of refuge and peace, where Christ is honored, friends and family can gather, and good memories be made! A couple of thoughts. Back in the 80's, in college, my roommate, me and my family, renovated a 1920's bungalow of my family's friend's father who was moved to be with her after her mom died. She would let us have cheap rent (a big deal in the L.A. area!) for our labor in restoring the house. Her parents had been chain smokers (cigarette, and in his case pipe and cigar as well) and the house reeked. We took down paintings and you could see where they had been for decades like my husband's farmers tan (but he smells much much better!); pulled down heavy duty woven wall coverings, popular from 2+ decades earlier and you could still see where the paintings had been by the clear outlines on the painted wall beneath. We washed the walls with t.s.p. (trisodium phosphate - don't know if you can get that now, at least not in California...?) and it really helped get rid of the tobacco penetrating the paint (i think it was painted lathe and plaster - years before dry wall), though we had to wash multiple times until our water didn't look like we were emptying a spitoon! So, my thought is to clean the ceilings with t.s.p. or something like it. We then used Kils, as you alluded to, and it worked! We did not have the smell of smoke and other things (no pets but the refrigerator had stopped cooling - it had been left running and not been cleaned completely out and had meat in it - and it had become an incubator. Those are smells that rival the worst sewer backage, but I digress.) Second thought is with human aging issues. My husband and I are a few years ahead of you and have done work on our 1880 farm house. Electrical is so important. What a boon to have a master electrician son! I would recommend you put in more outlets than you think you will need and consider putting them not at floor level. In remodeling, higher outlets can be easier to plug in vacuums and not have to lean over so far; you can plug devices in from table height like lamps and chargers; they are more readily accessed by wheelchair, should that be an issue. And, along those lines, if you are planning to grow old here (or have older guests like your moms), think about handicap accessability - 4' halls, if you plan on hallways, grab bars in the bathrooms, etc. I pray you guys age well, but if you need a hip replacement, even temporarily those things can be a blessing if walkers or wheelchairs are ever needed. Blessings!
