I breed corn snakes as a hobby and would like to analyze the DNA of young snakes to determine if a certain pattern or color change is caused by an inheritable genetic mutation

I'm a biotech student, and these are pretty much the most common and basic lab equipments. Although it is missing a spectrophotometer to check concentration and purity.

+Yamil Diaz since youre a biotech student can u tell me if u can even "analyze" a DNA sample with a gel electrophoresis as far as i know u cant really tell much from that method at least not what specific gens a person has right?
@FrostFireTiger8 жыл бұрын
+Aksel Hansen Gel electrophoresis shows the presence of DNA or proteins (depending on what type of gel) as bands depending on the size of the molecule. Mostly it tells you if you actually have DNA in your sample. But it can also tell you if you have fragments of different lengths. What matters more is the PCR technique that you do in the thermalcylcer. With that you make copies of certain segments and genes in the DNA. For example if you know of a gene that is associated to a higher risk of cancer, you can use a primer of that gene in the thermalcycler. If the sample has that gene it will be amplified and the you can check in the gel electrophoresis to see if the DNA was multiplied. No gene = no molecules in the gel, gene = molecules in the gel.

From the readings from this machine, what could you learn about a specimen, can you identify physical attributes of the specimen?

This product is great. One way you can use it is to confirm if your father or mother's DNA matches with yours. You can do that.

I'm sick of these crowdfunded projects, they cut corners on quality every time, they spend millions on JUNK.

I did dna analysts using mango extract in lab in college. It wasn’t as hard as I imagined. I don’t think you can totally rule out contamination so it probably isn’t going to hold up in court but still really easy.

The overall point I think is to bring down the cost of these technologies and make it cheap accessible. Think of what devices like this can do for disease diagnostics in developing countries. It would revolutionise diagnostics for diseases like T.B which takes weeks now to diagnose using conventional culture methods but could take just a matter of hours with a kit like this(especially if it does PCR reactions too which I am assuming it does but its not very clear in this story) plus if it is that robust and portable you could eliminate the need for people to trek to far off health centres you could take the kit to them and test them in their remote village locations this is great!

I prefer the other co-host from last month instead of this guy, he brings nothing to the conversation, for the past week it's like kim is interviewing him not bantering or discussing the topic.

Unless it plugs in to a computer and tells you everything with no knowledge required I don't think it's a practical every person device. If you can use it to compare DNA of different species then maybe we can start to build a tree of life using 100% amateur research. That would be interesting.

All you will be able to do with this is very simple genetics. Like compare one unknown human sample to say 5 overs and know who it came from or if people are directly genetically related, or what gender a person is. This is not a sequencer and if you're not a scientist you're not going to be able to use this is any unique way or get data that is outside of the protocols specified. It would be nice to see this in schools though.
@NebulaBlackF8 жыл бұрын
+scotty18192 This is not the only portable device though. There's Oxford's Nanopore, which is a USB device that you can use to sequence DNA/RNA really fast. Nanopore + Bento Lab + *insert future portable synthesizer* = a bio lab that you can carry around.
@viveknamikaze7613 жыл бұрын
@@NebulaBlackF That's like 2500$ for the bento lab + sequencer which is quite cheap tbh

Horse meat is delicious, still can't quite fathom why government has any business banning it. Remember, some of our greatest American heroes ( Lewis and Clark expedition) routinely ate not only horse meat, but dog meat as well.

HI Kim, I met you briefly last thursday at the thinkTank event. I have a couple show ideas for you but they are selfishly motivated --the role of previsualisation in feature films and the difficulties of independent content creators. I tried to send you a message through facebook, which you may not find unless you search through your filtered message requests. If you look for it, it will be from "Brian", not "Joey Joe Joe" If you respond to it, that would be awesome. If you don't respond to it, or this comment, I won't hold it against you. Thanks. -b.
