I like the game but don't understand anything about it, even after two months of playing. Unbelievably robust game. The big gripe I have is that it isn't maintained well enough by Funcom.

​@@MarleMMO I guess he's talking about newbie isle, I have old AO accounts with toons still on there, other than that the island is gone :( I also have a froob buff smurf (hot/runspeed/fixergrid fixer) and some other froob dungeon carrying toons still around iirc. I came back to AO a few years ago, back then the game was overrun with a veteran group hacking the game for lulz exploiting a stat stacking by itemswapping hack which kinda made me not resub after 2 month. Other than that, I would consider AO my favourite MMO of all times and I did play a lot. Being german, DNW the german server (RK3) was insanely populated in the 00s and one of the greatest communities I ever met. Even during my last venture the community is lovely and solid albeit small. The game has the coolest skill/levelling system ever with so many factors and infinite room for theorycrafting and solo aswell as group and raid activities, really cool crafting... I might have to come back in 2022 I guess and give it a try in its current state.

Funcom would have an instant hit on their hands with an AO2, using modern graphics capabilities, but preserving the essence of the the World of Rubi-Ka and the different classes. Makes you wonder why they didn't do it, instead of sinking money into failure after failure over the intervening years since AO was released.

Man, i really liked the skill based items rather than level based ones. You could hot swap items and basically become really OP with the implants etc… A level 24 that could solo subway’s boss or could walk around TOTW… that was awesome.

The reason is the same reason they pulled the same UI across two games from very large year gaps between the two. The original devs who made it so good have long been gone. I agree though having hundreds hours into this game if we just got a truly updated graphics engine with the exact same game it would be absolutely crazy how popular it would be. You guys ever remember making "twink" characters? Level 200 gear on a level 15 by baby stepping your stat implants lol. So many good times to be had in this game :)

@@MarleMMO It's been 10 years or more so forgive me if I get this off a little. So lets say you have 2 implant slots. I used to slot an implmant in 1 that I could wear that would give me the stats to be able to slot an implant that I couldn't wear before in slot 2. So then the stats from implant in slot 2 allow me to slot an implant in slot 1 that's even higher than the first one which then allows me slot an even better implant in slot 2. You go back and forth across the board until you reach a point you're ready to put the ones with the stats you need for your gear in and then you slot those guys and you DO NOT TAKE THEM OUT. My character was level 15 and I would basically 1 shot anything that was even remotely close to my level and doing PvP was hilarious because you'd be fighting against other level 15s. An Agent was the class I chose to do that with, but it doesn't really matter about the class> The method is the same. VERY expensive to do, I think I spent 10 mill just to get one character up to wearing QL 100 (if that's evne the right term) gear. Also this data is for real from 2007 so who knows if they've drastically changed things (I kind of doubt it).

Thanks for the mention, a good start and I can understand the confusion, AO's tutorial system is an incomplete afterthought added 14 years after it's launch. To actually understand the game there is a lot to learn in character builds and even basic game mechanics; however the best way to learn all of this is to ask other players in game or via the official discord generally the AO player-base are glad to help and explain; and to use other third-party sites to read/watch guides and tutorials such as AOU ( Anarchy Online Universe) or my let's builds series/guides. Once you have these understood you can then begin to learn about raid/fight/team-build tactics to help you accomplish your various goals in-game. Safe Journeys

Brings back memories. All those nights with our good heckler buddies. Those massive NT kites and guild runs. Competing for rare mob spawns and the twinking (actual twinking, not just using low level items with good stats). A game with such vast amount of content, mechanics and experiences. Incredible that they put together something like that back then. Too bad the IP is just stagnant. Would love for a new company to pick up the IP and actually produce a modernized version of AO. That's the game I'd play. That's the only game I'd play.

I would Love an AO2, the Skill- and EquipmentSystem was the best I ever saw. Equipping an High-Level Item, without it becoming overequipt, was a fun Challenge in itself. This combinend with finding nanos, not just buying or getting them through levelup and a slow levelcurve was awesome for me, but i doubt this would sell well today. AO was also a MMO that did not feel like it is needed to be max Level for the fun things to start.

I love this game. It is my favorite MMO by far, & perhaps my favorite game. I'll never feel the same way as I did when I was 13 years old, running around Rome Blue on my tradeskill adventurer with a Rifle, looking at stores with vibrant signs like "GUNZ" & exploring the world before I knew the general way MMOs worked & the luster wore off; Enjoying the awesomely mysterious, ancient but futuristic soundtrack with complete & total immersion. The adventurer was eventually remade after a few laughs from folks who were nice enough to help me.. but while that character was deleted, Rome Blue will always have a place in my heart as my favorite MMO city & Anarchy Online will forever warm my heart upon reminiscing the amazing times I had playing with, honestly, the nicest & most unique community I've ever encountered.

I always loved how all of your progression was completely under your control. Heck, even the death penalty was completely under your control, as you could "insure" yourself whenever for a small fee.

I miss the old "island" starting zone. Your ship crashed, you hop off, talk to a doctor, get your first quest, and do your thing. Work your way up and eventually go to mainland. It was epic. Then because of lowering player counts, they decided to trash individual faction subways and go with one neutral subway that everyone goes into. As well as a new starting zone (arete landing). The OG starting zone was best. That gives me the fucking nostalgia feels especially the music. The new zone is cool in its own way, but will never hit me in the feels as the old island starting zone did.

@@MarleMMO Yeah, before the junkyard, you just started in a back garden to one of the city districts, they were cool and all, but not alot of quests there. You can still enter them from the city districts they were connected to, such as Omni-trade, along the outer wall .. but they are pretty empty now. They had some nice and chill jazzy music though. I liked to hang out there.

Anybody that wants a new unique game should try this until this day. 20 years solid and still a reasonable playerbase. Can guarantee you that you will have a solid time to try to get your character to endgame.

I have played it on and off over the last 15 years, installed it and subscribed again a few months ago, somehow lost access to my account and after being unsuccessful with getting in touch with any customer service i eventually gave up, when searching for solutions i found out i am not alone in this happening. I would easily recommend AO to anyone but have lost all faith in it after this recent experience.

Anarchy online was the first mmo i played, and as far as i remember, one of the first if not the first available to play. Its gameplay was awesome, each class was unique with his own weapons and techno-skills, the enforcer was such an incredible tank, the soldier with his 80% protection shields, the bureaucrat who could tame the strongest creatures ingame, the adventurer able to morph in a dozen of creature, from little bird to huge dragon, each one with up and downsides, the agent who could mimic any other class abilities, the nano-tech, king of AoE farming, and all the others i can hardly remember... Evrything was good in this game, the farming was crazy fun, as the best boss on the maps was almost always camped by someone, u had to fight both the players and the boss to claim the loot, unless u decided to team up. The raids was so much fun as well, so far from what came in following mmos, u could have 100 peoples going for pandemonium raid together 3 times a day, 200 or more raiding alien ships and still failing. No need to dedicate 3 nights a week to have a chance to access end game content, u just had to be logged when the raid started and u was able to join ! No wonder ther are still players in the game, 20 or 25 years after the launch, but sadly not enough to keep it really alive, as it once been... The obsolete graphics and the inherent complexity of the game caused its death, frightening new players, while old players was leaving to try the just-launched-new-gen-mmo called "worl of warcraft" Still, i always wondered why Funcom didnt recycle this awesome game in a new one, keeping all the unique parts which made it so lovely, with modern graphics but same gameplay... Memories ...

AO is always rough to learn but once you learn it you get pretty good quickly. I haven't played it in years though. One feature I miss is how your head lights up when you hit enter after typing something. It lets you know who said what. Some other older games had similar features. Like how Entropia Universe used to make your character speak in audible gibberish when you type, or how Second Life makes you're character type on an invisible keyboard. Of course this was back when there was a heavy enfaces on RP in MMORPGs. And of course I realize SL isn't a game its a virtual chat world. Still had some cool features.

Such a fabulous game!!! The atmosphere around 2008/2009 was amazing? I remember people all having fun on the streets teeming with people, doing all sorts, chatting, laughing, showing off their loot... When I crafted this gun it was so enthralling. Doing the dungeons as a team, actually just casually running into people and teaming up, we hit it off straight away, and they taught me a fair bit... Everyone had their roles, I was healing, a good friend was tank... That is kind of amazing, that you can just meet and team up like that so freely. It was just the best social experience in game. Second life was the only other place I experienced that community spirit, but it's less of a game in a way. This has the best of both worlds, gaming MMO and chat room/virtual world. And it also has the coolest name, Anarchy! Let's all haXXor our way back to Anarchy Online! =D

Great video! I have played this before and really enjoyed the community. It reminded me of Gorgons in a way, which is great. However I worry about playing this game long term as it seems Funcom has a record for abandoning their MMO’s. Therefore if I get sucked in and get far and run into any major bugs. I wonder if I will get help, also it seems like Funcom doesn’t mention this game anymore which is troubling. I recently played Secret World Legends another game by Funcom and it crashed a record 17 times in which I eventually gave up. I then looked online with Josh Strife and he quit after mutiple crashes. Funcom is a established company. Their games should be a focus and they also shouldn’t have tragic problems with games after so many years being established.

Hey Plaximos! :) I saw Josh's video on SWL too. Anarchy Online is reasonably stable and I'm thoroughly enjoying a casual visit through its early game. We'll see how far I get, yet I'm deeply enjoying the deep nature of its systems and how helpful the community is!

This was the game that taught me to never pre-order a game. The first month it was released, the game was unplayable. I don't mean that metaphorically. I mean, if you tried to log in, the game would just crash. If you were lucky, you were able to see a quick screen of the hundreds of other people trying to log in at the same spot at the same time. It's the only game that I know of that refunded people's sub money because so few people were actually able to play the game. After that, it was so buggy that you could play but you didn't want to. I always liked the idea of a scifi MMO, and it's still one of the few out there. I believe it was the first of it's kind, but this was not a good start.

the first time I played this back in year potato, I got greeted by an ARK (I think they were called, not sure) just after leaving the ship on noob island asking if I have any questions about the game or mechanics. first and only MMORPG where I got greeted and welcomed to the game by a staff member. yes, ark(game masters/moderators) was very present ingame, and u could contact one whenever u had some issue playing. he was answering you as soon as he could and helped you solve your problem, so much better than actuals mmos systems. I remember a day we was farming xp with some friends, and figured a spot on top of a roof where mobs couldnt reach us and we could easily kill them. after some (short) time, all my team was warped in some very weird zone, where an ark explained us that what we was doing wasnt fair and was gamebreaking, and asked us gently to avoid playing this way. memories :)

I don't remember that warehouse. I know they got rid of the island tutorial but I have played the one that replaced it. Maybe they added the warehouse later on... I kinda miss the original "backyard" tutorials. Luckily you can still do those. Albeit they're rather short and aren't rewarding to do. Equiping weapons as an animal. Take that project Gorgon! Just kidding I love both games.

I played AO from 2006 to 2012 with as a froob and a paying player in a clan made some good friends in it 2 real life friends i have met in person this game isnt WOW its complicated in regards to equiping stuff using attributes. it was in 2012 it started to change to its current form Ps the reason for the items at the start is because funcom also published age of conan.

I am a new player. I been playing MMORPG,s for more then a decade, and really love the idea of what the devs came up with. My problem is, after leveling through the starting area. The next areas feel empty. I don’t see anyone leveling. Maybe I am in the wrong areas, idk. I have watched tutorials, but most of them explain only during the starting area what to do. Another thing is what class would best suit my play style, in WoW I played as a healer pally. I am thinking of Doctor.

Hrm, youtube destroyed my comment. Well, I've played this game since launch and absolutely love it because there's no other game like it. It's complex and offers alot to do. Even if just logging in and checking out places I've not visited in decades on Rubi Ka brings back memories. Wish more played but the game is still awesome today playing solo. Anyone looking to try the game should def check out Caloss2's channel on yourtube for great tutorials and gameplay. He does a fantastic job with his AO videos.

The original launch starting areas were called backyards. They existed in the cities or sometimes suburb towns. You can still access these backyards. When shadowlands expansion first launched, you had option of starting there. Then they went to the starting island for many years, and if I recall, they then went to Arete starting area after that.

@@MarleMMO Not ICC but you can go through the giant teleporters to Borealis or Newland. Also different ones exist for the factions. For OT they're in Rome and Trade District, and for Clan they're in Athens and Tir. The backyards are doors along the walls of the cities with numbers above them. There are even apartments in them, though I never really liked the way apartments worked so I never used them.

After genetic reconstruction, you arrived on the shuttle at a kind of ICC terminal/lobby area, then took a portal to one of the Omni, Clan, or Neutral backyards. Also the original apartments were super cool and I wish they did more with them. There was no way to upgrade it or anything so you basically never went back there except for roleplay purposes.

Back in the day you could reach insane character size both tall and small. They nerfed that stuf a bunch but if you have a Essence of Behemoth, Enlarge AND a Mongo Slam you can still be a giant. Agents Ruse nanos makes them way smaller to the point of a small doll. :D

Hanging out in "The Cup" in West Athen. My buddies level 1 twinked into level 70 armor and weapons. He will gank you in the arena in Tir. Meeting up with the guild, seeing who wants to run a mish, or go recover my corpse way out in some dessert zone high above my level. I remember Gridstream Productions , with DJ Tarryk (sp?) at Reet's Retreat streaming live on weekends (DOOOOOOM!). Had to extract an OMNI defector there once (a pc), the crowd freaked out when the ARK (admin) dropped the suppression field to 0%, OMNI-POL rush in guns blazing, rando pc's in the club sent back to the reclaim, we had to fire fight our way out of the building! (the admin/ark supported our player made event... and changed it from no pvp zone, to full pvp just for the event. such an awesome community). Great times, Great stories... lots of fun memories. and yeah... back yards.

@@MarleMMO Wait till you see the Mission Terminals, and how dynamic you can generate a mission, how it pieces the rooms and halls together randomly. To this day I have never seen another MMO do that. And if you generate a team mission it has multiple floors. The closest thing I've seen to this is player creation missions in City of Heroes.

@@MarleMMO You can find them in the main cities. They look like little futuristic kiosk machine things, sometimes with an M floating above them. Sorta like the vendor shops. When you click on them the name should say "Mission Terminal" and "Team Mission Terminal". Easiest ones to find can be found in the center of Newland City, and along the sides of buildings in Borealis. Once you got a mission you follow the indicator on your compass till you find the door. You may have to open your planet map. Especially if the mission is in another zone since you wont see it on your compass if that's the case. The higher level you get the further out the missions are from your location. This is where having a flying vehicle comes in handy.

I played AO since beta. I stopped in 2007. I went back and and found the economy has gone insane. If you are new and/or not a billionaire you cannot even buy the most basic of equipment. I also noticed the game is so top heavy that if you are low level prepared to be ignored. Even if you get in a corp. most of your corp. mates will be too high level to help with missions and so forth. It is a real shame because I used to really enjoy playing.

@@MarleMMO AFAIK AO has had two emulation projects that both fizzled out. Shame really, though unlike EQ I feel like there were good elements to later expansions in AO, SL and AI specifically, I quit long before Lost Eden. Just started playing again recently, I've been multiboxing froobs with a paid main so I don't have to worry about lack of groups, and I've dropped the froobs if people want to join up. It's pretty fun for the time being, does feel quite sad not seeing the cities packed like they used to be though. There always used to be PvP and other shenanigans happening in the main cities, at least ICC is fairly busy, and consolidating the subways/making quick travel to ToTW was a good move. I hope a sequel happens, but I've very little confidence it will, and even less that they won't mess it up/dumb it down too much if they do attempt it.
