Thank you for the interesting information. It is sad to see the almost abandoned and dysfunctional present state of Hotel Baron. I paid a short visit to this hotel in 1990, on my way from Yerevan to Beirut during the fiercest battles of Lebanon's civil war. I had to leave my luggage here before I made some enquiries on how to travel to Beirut through Damascus. This was indeed a perilous journey. At Hotel Baron I was pleasantly received by a very kind Lady, probably the then owner of this important landmark of Aleppo and the Middle East. I hope she is alive and doing well now.

Armenians of Kessab were also famous for producing Laurel soap! There was a factory back in the 1990s and 2000s called "Laurapel", which, as I know, moved to LA after the Syrian War!

Great video! Aleppo is a fascinating city, with a very rich and ancient history. Good to know that the Souk el Sakkatiyeh is being restored. The historic Hotel Baron is unfortunately abandoned and damaged, probably beyond repair. The Aleppo soap is a great specialty, but the description of the manufacturing process was lacking - the Guide mentioned the laurel oil, but didn't mention the really most important ingredient, which is the olive oil (at least 80% of the total ingredients).

In Aleppo, Damascus and Latakia, I was surprised at how fair many of the people were. So much red hair too. Fairer than the people of Greece in most parts. But the west media never showed that on their coverage of the troubles.

A lot of people in the Levant have red hair and fair skin. Most of red hair and even blonde hair you can see on women but because Muslims women mostly wear hijab you wont see them. Most Levantine Arabs kids when born have red or blonde hair but turn dark after they reach puberty. My mom was red hair until she turned 12. Red hair is so common in the middle east but a lot of middle eastern like to henna or dye their hair black so in some places you wont know. Most of them either descendance of Turkic tribes from central Asia like during the Mamluk and Seljuk times. Most Mamluke had red hair even the famous Sultan Baibar of Egypt. Other red hair may came from Eastern European or Balkans during the Ottoman times. In Ottoman times the Turk put a lot of Circassian, Albanian, Bosnian and other Balkan origin soldiers in Syria, Egypt and Palestine. Many Circassian also settled in Syria after the Russian gen*ci&e of Circassian in 18 century. Although not many Circassian had a red hair but they do look very European and have fair skin. The Arab used to call the red hair Arab Levantine as Arabized Roman. Which kinda true because they were the subject of Byzantine rome before they converted to Islam.

In Southern California, where I reside, there are many Armenian shops that sell them. There are also some Middle Eastern shops, where I am sure you can find them too.

Amazon carries a variety of Aleppo soaps. The higher percentage of Laurel Oil, the better quality the soap is.

@@m.c.fromnyc2187 Thanks. I think the tricky part with sites like Amazon is knowing if it's authentic, actually from Aleppo.
