Thank you for treating this masterpiece of a trilogy with the seriousness it deserves. No matter what songs Ren writes, serious, uplifting, funny or just plain creepy, he always puts in something with the intention of making you think. That is his main goal in life. As he says in the Hunger; ”I grow, then I preach. Scrap that, I teach. Teach over beats to all those that seek ”.

I don’t know how many times I’d watched the tales before it dawned on me that Jenny was only 14 as well!! That they would’ve both have been placed in the care system and separated as babies which would be why screech didn’t know who it was that he was killing!! It’s all so deep with so much interpretation and Ren has talked about leaving things open for people to have their own take on things. I really appreciate your reactions to the two songs you’ve listened to. Something to note tho- sometimes Ren fans write some really critical and condescending comments- I think it’s because they’ve forgotten the fact that they’ve seen it over and over again and don’t give grace to reactors when they’re literally watching it for the first time. Don’t take any of that to heart. You give Rens work the attention and depth of thought it deserves, not all reactors are able to do that so I really really appreciate it when people do! Looking forward to the next one! Much love from the UK!😊xxx

Also, at 9.32 you mentioned how small descisions make differences in our lives. In his song ”Bittersweet Symphony the Verve Retake” Ren says ”mad how small altercations can define who we are”. He is very aware of how much our lives are affected by seemingly unimportant events.

Wow, some of those comment are harsh. Mate the first time I watched this, I could not stop saying "FUCK" for while and constantly repeating that. Then I also had tears flowing during that and to be honest my mind was fucked, it checked out because that ending is a serious kick in the balls! Not sure why people would not allow you that moment to actually experience what you just watched. I'm glad you did this part2 and I hope its because you felt you wanted to and not because of peoples comments... I truly hope this is not the Renegades behaving like this, we should support people and guide them if we think there is more to the songs but please do not behave in a shitty way, that is not how we do things!!! ❤❤

Appreciate you coming back to process this more with us. REN’s work does get the wheels turning! He has talked about the interplay of nature/nurture in other places too. It’s a worthy conversation and I think ultimately Ren points us towards empathy as a way to respond to that question. Back on 74/message in a bottle will be fun for the Jazz aspect. You definitely deserve a lighter side of Ren after this.

Great reactions and how you were impacted is how most people are. Don't apologise for not getting all of it initially - and if people are crticising that, then that's just stupid: Ren is a master of hidden meaning and in an interview he has said that it was deliberate misdirection in Jenny's Tale to leave her age ambiguous (which leaves the natural assumption that she is older). Welcome to Part 2 of your life!

Thanks for a great follow-up analysis. One very interesting hint that folks from the UK have mentioned: Where we use John Doe and Jane Doe to refer to unnamed people, they use Jenny and James. One of my favorite lines from Violet's Tale is one that I haven't heard reactors mention (out of the literal hundreds of reactions I've watched) is: "Packing shelves in Tesco, stacking jars like pickled bricks". It paints such a vivid picture of Violet's desperate situation as a young pregnant girl forced to be on her own, having to do backbreaking manual labor just to survive. It's no wonder she fell so quickly for Stevie as a way to escape.

Wow, another treat! Thanks for this! I'm not sure if my outrageously long comment in 3 parts on your previous trilogy reaction actually got posted, they showed error messages every time I tried to edit them, and disappeared from my browser when I refreshed the page. I did save them after losing several tries. (note to self: ALWAYS write long comments in a text editor first in case they evaporate!!) Anyway, thanks again for your splendidly insightful, informed and genuine Ren reactions! There's not a shred of hyperbole when I say that Ren has changed my life so very much for the better, not just personally but as a musician, performer and audio engineer. At 57 years old, having ridden the 'feast or famine' rollercoaster of making and playing music for a living since I was 14, and with not much to show for it in terms of material wealth or security, I was getting a bit jaded about music, life, the whole shebang, honestly feeling ready to take steps to not be alive anymore, and bloody hell, from Hi Ren on I've felt my passion and love for music and art in general come back stronger, better and deeper than ever! And musically, he's got me rethinking how I structure, deliver and experience solos, my backing/vamping, relationship between my violin lines and a vocalist's performance, finding and expressing meaning through melody, harmony, texture, timbre, rhythm, groove... just everything!

I do not have a the information but, there's a poet on YT who was so inspired by these tales that he wrote a poem about Richard, the officer. He performed it and posted it. Wish I had the info but, maybe someone on here does. I was reminded of it because you've brought up Richard a couple of times, and the effect of shooting a teen boy would have on him.

Love your recognition of the intricacies of REN’s gift. One listen/reaction is clearly not enough to grasp the depth of the message he’s portraying. He is here at this moment in time to educate us as we enter a crossroads for the human race. Either we decide to care about each other, and the planet we call home, or the planet will decide to extinguish us. We won’t destroy the planet, because the planet will choose to eliminate us if we continue our current path. People created religion, people created money, people created borders. Have you met people??? WTF.

The 'such a shame' line is one part if this that's true. Ren was inspired by a story in the news about a 14 year old who killed someone and the police at a news conference said 'ut's such a shame'. The rest - which is 99% is all Ren!

How about, Screech's friend Patrick was out because he was with Screech's "babe". Jenny was a child prostitute "she walked the streets about a thousand times before". Is Stevie or Violet's father the twins father?I I don't think anyone has yet mentioned that Screech gets his name from the sound of the soles of his shoes. Violet's mother was a drinker because she was aware of what her husband was doing. Getting away from the story to some gear facts Ren plays a Taylor acoustic in Jenny's tale, but changed to a Cordoba flamenco guitar for the subsequent tales, the Cordoba features a lot in Ren's videos he obviously prefers it to a classical guitar probably for its percussive sound and fret buzz which you don't get with a classical guitar. Once again a great reaction mate.

Some fun? Facts about these tales. This story was inspired by the murder of a sex worker and the news calling it a shame. The tale of Jenny and Screech was released in 2019. If you subtract 14 years (so Jenny and Screech's age) you get 2005 (London City, far from pretty, 2005- Violet's tale) Patrick (Screech's friend) and Screech's girlfriend were both unavailable because they were busy together.
@Skybolt211

On the tragedy or miracle deal, I think it has to do with the whole last section, which is very clever. Going all the way back to the beginning where he starts that paragraph... he says Violet "just lost the fight to stay alive." That's really the end of the story. What comes after that is a recap (referring to the VERY end of the story, which we now know is that Screech and Jenny are dead, and now how they are connected). But it works for the beginning, as well. "A tragedy, or a miracle? It happened on these very streets. Two twins aligned side by side, a girl named Jenny, and a boy called Screech." So I think that while most people think of the twins side by side is referring to them being in the hospital, just being born, and though it applies that way as well, it's even more leaning towards it being them at the END of their lives... when they are lying side by side in the streets. (One street apart.) The reason I was say that is because, "it happened on these very streets" would apply better literally to their later encounter, than being born on the streets, since they were in hospital. (Although it still works about the birth because the whole drama kinda plays out in the "streets".) Ren also called him Screech in that sentence, which technically, he would been known as James at that point in his life... although, overall, that person did become known as Screech, so it still works both ways. Okay, now the tragedy and miracle part can refer to several different things depending on whether you're thing about paragraph being their birth or after death. If just about their birth, is it a "tragedy" that Violet was murdered or is it a "miracle" that the doctor was able to rescue the twins and keep them alive, per Violet's dying wish. Sidenote: which in itself is violent. Probably a C-section in which a scalpel (knife) is used by the doctor to cut Violet open and rescue the twins, so interesting how a knife was also involved in both of their deaths. And pooor Violet, died without ever knowing whether her babies were saved, probably never even knew that she had twins, died hoping somehow her "child" could have a good life. Question, do you wonder if she could have known her 14yo son would murder her 14yo daughter, after both having hard lives, would she have just preferred they died innocently there in childbirth with her? That would be the second meaning of the tragedy or miracle question. Is the twins birth a tragedy because they had hard lives growing up and Jenny ends up being murdered by her brother, or a miracle, because hey, any new life is a miracle and sacred and awesome, even under those circumstances? OR maybe the tragedy or miracle at the end is actually to do with their death, them lying side by side in the streets since the rest of those lyrics there fit that scenario even better, like I mentioned above. In that case, was it a "tragedy" (a poor girl was murdered and her brother shot to death by police, 2 lives lost) or a "miracle" (Jenny, hating her life and wanting to escape, finally does. Or that Screech, who is a violent young youth who will spend his life committing crimes where more innocent lives might be lost, is neutralized as he was charging the police officer, attempting to kill Richard with his knife. I mean, wouldn't it have been better if Stevie would have had an unfortunate accident that took his life before he able to beat Violet to death?) Just blows me away how cleverly written and connected his stories and lyrics are.

He gives a voice to those concerned with the continuance of the human race. We either figure this shit out, or we will be replaced with the next iteration of life on earth. Our planet is perfectly positioned in the universe we reside in, to support life. But… the life that currently exists here is unable to recognize what’s important! Civility, empathy, acceptance. WTF. The album 'Ants from up there" by Black Country, New Road is also special, unfortunately the making of that album (amongst other things, I'm sure) took such a toll on the the frontman, Isaac Wood, that he quit as soon as it was finished. Its essentially a break-up album but done in the most intelligent and heartbreaking way.

Also, Jenny and screech, born as she died, most likely then were thrown into the system, because hopefully "stevie" went to prison for killing violate...either foster or adoption because they didn'tknow eachother. So they both had to grow up with that complexity in their lives too. Or maybe even raised by violate or Stevie's family or one to each family, but ultimately may have been worse for them because of the cycle. This ultimately could go deep, and talks about that vicious generational cycle of violence and most likely poverty/inner city Rough life.

It is the same 20 minutes 3 times over, with a difference of only 3 or 4 seconds in the chain of events at the beginning of the 20 minutes, but those few seconds vastly change the outcome of the two main characters as well as anyone they interact with. Pretty sure Stevie was the dad... we don't have enough info to know exactly what all Violet's dad was doing, but we DO know that Stevie was violent and beating her, Screech was violent... carried a knife, used it, "never missed a fight", etc. Stevie would get drunk or high and get enraged about Violet being calm, still, and silent which she did to handle trauma, Jenny had the same reaction to confrontation with Screech, she couldn't speak, move, or do anything. Screech, who had smoking ganga (high like his dad), loses his mind when Jenny doesn't react to him, does violence way worse than he was planning to do, and ends up killing Jenny, just like his dad does his mom. Also, we more evidence of how Stevie speaks to women when he's calling Violet names, and Screech uses some of the same words for Jenny. I know some of that would be environmental and not genetic, but I think Ren, in his complex mind which loves to interconnect words - songs - ideas - concepts - plot - makes Screech have traits of his dad on purpose, in order to give us clues of their identity...

There is a great reaction video by Stuart J Randall to the Tales that deals with the topic. He is a psychotherapist himself and works with juvenile delinquents: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gXLFhGhuidx4fLc And I recently stumbled over this great idea of a song: Jenny & Screech - BUT THINGS TURN OUT OKAY! kzbin.info/www/bejne/mYXNl62qgbZnq8k The song is created with help of AI but I love it anyways. It's done with a lot of love. And I love the idea that the story might turn out different in another universe. There's also a Richard's Tale on that channel. It's so great how Ren inspires people to get creative.

Multigenerational trauma, where did it begin? We see roots of Jenny and James trauma, both 'nature' of their parents, and the 'nurture' or lack thereof of the foster care system they were likely placed in. The mother of Violet, like many women often feel, or simply have limited options to escape, feel trapped, even when their children are suffering abuse. Which is also felt as a betrayal to the children, and this practiced ignoring, you don't see what you see, hear what you hear, feel what you feel, becomes a practice of silence. For males this can turn into self-loathing and hatred expressed in episodes of rage and violence. In many societies there is often an underclass 'other,' subjected to systematized abuse, but likely no other condition sets up the conditions for individuals to act out pathologically to their families than the experiences of war. Imagine all the returning veterans who suppress their trauma of what they saw, experienced, or worse, what they did. Substance abuse, verbal/physical abuse, sexual violence, all much higher in such a cohort. Then those children of veterans carry the scars and act out behaviors rooted in their trauma.

My Understanding is that the original Jenny & Screech 2 songs were based on a true story where a 14 year old boy killed a streetwalker & was then killed by the cops, The story at that time reflected just that, Jenny in that case was an adult, in High heel shoes, Violet followed much later & I think it was at that point that the story changed introducing Violet as the mother, there's often confusion thinking the original story had a 14 year old sex worker, The narrative changed later turning Jenny into maybe an innocent School Girl.

Further I surmised that jenny was aware of the notorious, wreckless "screech " n the neighborhood. This may be why she froze like a statue in high heel shoes. But speaking of which jenny was fourteen years old as well and wearing high heel shoes out on the streets late at night? Do the math.

I agree, I know apparently Ren has said she wasn't, but that surprised me because usually he'd say it's up to us to interpret. I think all the clues that she is street walker are in the songs themselves. Why else would a 14 year old in make up and high heels be walking those streets a 1000 times at that time of night? 🖤

My take on the tragedy or miracle line is that it's tragic that they were born together in the same time and place as they were twins, but also died together in the same time and place. It's a desperate tale of generational dysfunction. Here we have just 3 generations of abuse, sexual abuse and addiction. How many more generations going back does this go? Violet's parents were messed up and were probably that way because their parents were also dysfunctional and so it goes back in time. There's a vicious cycle that none of them have been able to break out of.

Also your musings on the butterfly effect was a first :). One thing you might want to do to get some very interesting perspective the life Violet, Jenny and Screech probably had is watch Born on the Breadline (Poverty Documentary) or the Skint and it's easy to see how these kids at 14 could find themselves in this situation. As Ren says, "It's such a shame."

Because it was twins, I had formed the thought that it was more Probably her father's doing to impregnate her. Biological nature causes a higher propensity for twins when the gene pool gets small. Genetics... One has to surmise that ren believes that genetics is a high factor.

Throughout Ren’s work is a critique of the paternal function as defective, absent, leaving in its place a greedy violator. Either adopt this heritage and follow in his footsteps or become a heretic, in other words, an artist. It is clear the choice Ren has made.

PS. Huge ethical question concerning nature/nurture : the technology/science/capitalism discourse wants the cause to be in our genes, this implies your destiny is written and you have no choice, the point you make about decisions is crucial, freedom to choose. Ren, victim of a tick, but what did he choose to do with it. Power. What is difficult is to recognise that some choices we have made are unconscious. Dirty word ‘The unconscious’ in our neurone hungry world ; this is our tragedy.

@@A-AronReacts There is the verse: She moved out at sixteen A semi-detached council flat "Paid for by a welfare-scheme" Getting the welfare would require her to be pregnant...leads to the belief that it was the father. Also, James calls her a slut, indicating that she was not a virgin when they met, and she was pregnant...possibly a trigger for his anger and beating her.

Someone from the UK said something about you can only get welfare council flats at 16 if you are pregnant. I’m not sure if that’s true BUT, if it is, then one would assume that Violet was pregnant when she “moved out at 16”. Also, Stevie repeatedly calls Violet a liar. Perhaps she claimed Stevie was the father but he knew/suspected that he wasn’t? I don’t think that Ren has clarified his thoughts publicly. ☮️♥️

Sadly there is a small but busily typing subset of Ren trolls masquerading as fans m, they are evidently unaffected by his message so cannot be Renegades, who are rude and demanding. No matter what a reactor does or doesn’t do or what the understand or miss these trolls are ever ready to try to beat down new reactors. We should do a better job of warning new reactors to disregard them. It is good, for different reasons, not to have captioning on for this or Hi Ren, but lyrics in another window are good. Beyond these two it really doesn’t matter much.
