I don't think she having a white father invalidates or makes her having her chinese heritage as important worse. She is clearly someone who doesn't pass as white, so learning about her culture not only connects her to her past, it also protects her. As a 1/4 japanese person, learning about that part of me was important growing up. While I don't identify as asian because i don't pass as one, learning a part of me and interacting with it was important, and my peruvian family learns from it too.

Exactly! Then Buffy turned him down too! I think he would have worked well as Andi's love interest both for representation reasons and because they're both arty and creative. Buffy and Marty work well because they're both sporty, although I wouldn't have minded her and Walker together either tbh, especially with how suddenly Marty was written back in. Either way, he's a character with real potential and a lot of the fanfic writers in the fandom have recognised that and added them to their works (myself included).

Thank you for talking about this issue, Harriyanna. ‘Andi Mack’ and these other shows want to represent mixed-race people too much, especially the ones who pass the brown paper bag test. Andi mack was created by the people who made lizzie mcguire (who made lizzie's best friend mexican even though the actress is filipina with a hispanic last name and didn't look east asian or south asian) so i think there are only white people working behind the scenes of andi mack. Seems like they forgot that they accurately casted people to be andi's grandparents and mother (who is biracial like andi), then gave up and just grabbed some random white man that was working on other Disney projects because the actress playing andi's mom looks asian (to non-asian eyes; she looks mixed to asian eyes). [Then again, it is not just a disney problem. In one of Nickelodeon's power rangers shows, they casted a thai actor's character to be mexican just because the actor was brown and didn't look east asian or south asian.] White people don't know how race-mixing works beyond half-non-white, half-white. All of that could have been avoided if they had just asked the young actors and actresses to help them (like what spiderverse did for indian spiderman). [If andi mack's actress was white-passing, the dad casting wouldn't look as weird (but still be weird since we can clearly see both of andi's grandparents). However, both the actresses for andi mack and her mom look mixed (to asian eyes) and none of them are white-passing. Every person that is 3/4-white and 1/4-asian looks white - and this applies to every person that is 3/4-white 1/4-non-white.] Also, considering that andi mack takes place in Utah (instead of a place known for more diversity like New york city, los angeles, atlanta, detriot, hawaii, etc.), the diversity in race, ethnicity, and color in that show doesn't shock or surprise me as much. Andi mack fans: Oh boy. I wonder who andi's dad is and which half-white, half-chinese actor they'll get to play him. Disney: (shows random white man to be andi's dad and not andi's mom's friend) Andi Mack fans: WTF?!? Asians: That's not how it works. Examples of people that are 3/4-white 1/4-non-white: one of the british guys on JOLLY, Keanu Reeves, tim poole (shudders), meghan markle's kids, tamera mowry's kids, kellyanne conway's kids, jon and kate's kids, logic (the rapper), hailee steinfeld, drake's son, kourtney kardashian's kids (techincally armenians are considered white in the us census but not socially and robert kardashian sr might have roma blood in him), shakira's kids (shakira is half-lebanese; swanas only considered white by the us census), Lauren chen's kid (poor kid), Olivia munn and John mulaney's son, Mike shinoda's son, Pete wentz, tamera mowry's kids Honorable mentions of people that are mostly white with a sliver of non-white: Bruce Lee's grandkids (Bruce Lee is 3/4-chinese 1/4-white while his wife is 100% white), Halsey, taylor lautner (don't know how much indigenous he is; only known that his mom has indigenious blood), Vin diesel (his mom is white but his dad is implied to be mixed even though they have never met), Jason momoa's mom and kids (implied but percentages not confirmed)

Can I just add that there's a lack of male asian characters in kids media...and you pointing out that her dad should be half asian really shows that. Even with the grandparents, the grandpa was white. Notice that? Also notice any asian character in kids media. It's either a quirky asian girl or a nerdy asian guy. Kids media really displayed asians as quirky or really dainty girls or nerdy guys, if there were even guys. I think this really pushed the 'asians are unattractive' agenda, which is another form of racism. I'm glad we're slowly pushing past that, even if it's mainly from kpop or korean media. It's at least a step. But this really opened up the fact that asians are rarely shown in media. And a lot of times, they are korean and playing japanese or chinese characters...which is weird. Just make them korean.

Can I just add that Hollywood has a big issue with fetishizing Asian women and white men? Almost as much as they fetishize white women with black men, and the only reason I think its worse with asian women and white men is because I cannot think of the last Asian American marriage on TV that isnt portrayed as the stereotypical tiger parents in a loveless marriage where responsibility seems to be the only thing holding it togther, but there are shows where black American couples are in a loving and and successful marriages. I mean i guess thats why a lot people, especially in the asian community, enjoy K Dramas and K-TV shows in general nowadays, it portrays a lot more than American TV has ever done.

I loved this show and was in the fandom for a bit. The whole thing with Walker being sidelined, the Jewish character (Cyrus) being used for comic relief a lot, Andi being like only a quarter Asian (Ham is white, as are both of Bowie's parents, meaning it was just CeCe/ Celia who's not white), Buffy being mixed-race as opposed to black and all of the main characters having white love interests due to Walker being sidelined really rubbed me up the wrong way. As much as I loved the show, I feel it missed the mark in quite a few ways despite the mostly good gay rep (although it was the whole stereotypical blond athlete and brunet dork dynamic) and the way it sensitively touched on heavy topics. Personally, I think it's one of the best shows to have come out of Disney Channel in the past six or seven years, but by no means is it super amazing or perfect or anything. They could have and should have done better. The show could have majorly benefited from having dark-skinned characters and they just...didn't. Thank you so much for pointing this out! I also don't want to talk over black people as a white Andi Mack fan but I just wanted to add my thoughts as someone who was super into the fandom years ago. Your criticisms are very valid and this video is excellent, as usual! Hopefully these shows can do better in future.

Im commenting this early on in the vid so i may edit/delete it to be at last a bit more relivant to the vid. There was originally a large paragraph explaining context, but since most of it is irrelevant, tldr: I'm native & identify w/ being native cause i grew up predpminatly w/ my native family (dispite being white passing & no one beliving me) I was just adding on my experience w/ what I feel is best described w/ the white-gaze. I had a white history teacher last year, he taught alot of important things often tied to race, like the black panthers, Japanese internment camps, but what I'm focusing on here is his lessons on fishing rights for native tribes in my state & native boarding schools. The native lessons were specifically anti-racist to my memory, with questions like "what steriotype did you learn is falce" or smth like that & whenever that would come up I'd sit on it like "uhhhhh-" **me typing** "im native, so I don't know how to answer this" he never brought it up w/ me but it made me realize lessons about natives aren't made **for** natives. Like, its to natives benefit, I definitely respect him for putting that question in his worksheets, its just not made with native kids in mind cause- like there might be 1 native kid for all of the 3 grades at my school- like he didn't sanitize it really, he admited that the white kids could feel ashamed etc durring some lessons but it just wasnt made for a native target audience. I dont expect that w/ the ratio of native kids at my school, Like, I couldn't think of a way he could cater to the basically 0.3% (~3/1000) native population at my school but it still feels off in a way to me. (Tangent about the 1 other native non-family member ive ever met, read if you want but my thoughts related to the topic r done now, i just feel its important to me specificly to share the rest of this with someone cause its personally important to me:) the 1st native person i met outside my family/native community events my family draged me to was a girl in the grade below me (who also happend to be the same tribe & the same flavor of white.) The only reason we met was to be asked last minute to recite the land acknowledgment at an assembly (in full regalia btw, we rocked that shit 💅 just annoying looking back, like- you had to ask 2 days in advance to have 2 elimentary kids talk infront of the whole school??)

Is it bad that I wrote fanfic abt this show when I was 15/16? It was fluff and angst only ofc, and very wholesome. But still, it feels weird looking back on it that I wrote fanfic on a Disney Channel show 😅 especially one with, in hindsight, such blatant colourism present in it.
@emersonsisson4005
@emersonsisson4005 Жыл бұрын
While I think that colorism in media corporations is a huge problem, I don't feel that it is the same problem as having a larger mixed-race cast of characters. Probably the best example of colorism in casting is The Hate U Give, where the main character Starr is a dark skin black girl in the books, but when it came to casting for the movie they chose a mixed, light skin actor to portray the character. A choice that didn't benefit the story because it never brought up the nuance of being a mixed person in the midst of what that character was experiencing. It was a movie/book about Starr's experience as a black girl in America which was undercut by casting a mixed actor to play a non-mixed character to appease white audiences, which is rooted in colourism and is straight-up racist on the part of the casting directors and execs. There are countless cases of this sort of thing happening in several different forms of media and it truly is an issue that stems from racism and colourism, however, I don't necessarily feel that that's the case for Andi Mack. Andi Mack is a show about a mixed-race white-Chinese girl, and regardless of her percentages that still holds true. She is visibly Asian and has a cultural and familial connection to both her ethnicity and her Chinese heritage, she was raised by a Chinese woman and a white man regardless of their parental status, Andi is mixed race and lives her life through that lens both in how she is perceived and how she perceived the world. There is zero need to justify her being Asian enough through percentages because as an outsider no one has a say in that but Andi (or anyone in a similar position or upbringing as Andi). Her dad being white does not take away from her being Chinese American especially because he didn't raise her, and when he did become a part of her life he educated himself and honored that part of her heritage. The same goes for pretty much any of the mixed characters on the show and their actors, every mixed character and actor that you talked about are visibly POC and it is quite frankly damaging to say that they aren't Asian or Black enough. There's an important distinction between being half white and half black vs. being white and black. Implying that someone is half of one race and half of another takes away from who they are and alienates them from both communities when in reality they are both races. They experience both facets of those different cultures and it's a difficult space to navigate especially when they have to prove they're black enough while still experiencing the trauma and oppression that comes from being black. (I do want to clarify that I'm using white&black solely as an example, and the same concept applies to any mixed-race people.) I'd also like to point out that the tone and content of what you're saying in the same breath as calling light-skin mixed folks "lightbrights" comes across as very condescending and alienating regardless of your intentions. Really it just makes you come across as colourist, which is really unfortunate because I do enjoy listening to your perspectives on these issues including this video. I just feel that this particular take is out of place as I don't feel that the content of the show itself is colourist, and seemingly one of the only reasons it feels that way to you is because you don't view the arbitrary percentages as being of colour enough. Could Andi Mack be more diverse? Yes, absolutely. It still is a show that very much appeals to the white gaze with a majority white cast even though it is supposed to center around a mixed Chinese American experience. Did colourism affect the casting choices made for this show? Most likely yes, and while most of the time I strongly feel that is the case, here I'm more iffy due to the cast mostly being children at the time of filming which would limit the casting pool significantly and could have affected the diversity of who was able to audition. When it comes to casting for this show I'd say it was probably largely impacted by both of those factors. Do I feel that Andi Mack as a show is a good example of colourism in the entertainment industry? Not particularly because the characters are either mixed as an important element of the show, or their race (mixed or not) doesn't really matter in the context of he show. Overall I think Andi Mack was a show that was progressive for its time and actively tried to accurately and respectfully portray multiple different situations and cultures. There's room to grow from Andi Mack's level of inclusivity and diversity and I truly believe we need to push to make that happen both within what the entertainment industry puts out and the industry itself.

I completely agree with your point about The Hate You Give! I was so confused because I read the book first. It saif she had her Mom's hazel eyes and her Dad's dark skin. I saw the actress portraying her and I was like...what? She isn't mixed-race and it detracts so much from it. Colourism is awful. I do think they should have done better but I think ultimately what sort of POC representation is on screen should be up to POC themselves and as a white person myself, I don't want to talk for or over POC.

I didn't watch the video yet, but with what I'm saying about the show is gonna be focusing on character's like Buffy and Walker. My main gripe with the show is not that they had mixed characters on the show, it was that they only would show people who were mixed or light-skinned when they'd show the Black kids. I'm not saying they aren't Black enough I'm saying Disney is afraid of showing unambiguously Black people on their shows. And when they are on their roles are small, and minimized. They only put Black people who have a close proximity to whiteness, and that's what colorism is. And that's not on Buffy's actress, and Walker's either, it's on the casting directors. On Disney they only featured unambiguously dark-skinned black characters as mainly side characters (which was already rare). The first show that ever featured someone like that was on the show Saturdays (which just came out this year). Also, they do this most especially with black girls. Every single girl on these shows has been light-skinned or mixed. And when Disney channel had a chance in the past to have unambiguously black girls as main characters in the past (Keke Palmer, and Coco Jones) they said that these characters wouldn't "relatable enough". The fact that they had other dark-skinned side characters on the other shows is proof that they could've had them on Andi Mack, but chose not to. There's just no question that Disney has a colorism problem. I'm just saying we can't minimize the impact that representation has. One last thing, I don't think that being mixed was an important element on Buffy's character only Andi's. It didn't matter with the biracial black character because colorism is practically the default on Disney channel. And truly they didn't care enough to talk about Buffy's mixed heritage. Actually I just checked this out, but on the show Buffy's actress is mixed playing an unambiguously black person (That's colorism for ya, shame on the casting directors). They only showed her mom who was a light-skinned black person, and they never showed her dad. Colorism sucks. On another note, with The Hate U Give on the cover of the book it's a dark-skinned black girl, but in the book they described her as caramel brown, and I think her mom was Honey brown. I think that people recognized her as dark-skinned because of the cover, and the lack of dark-skinned representation. It would've been nice if they did make her dark-skinned. I agree, the colorism was messed up. Clearly in the book Starr has 2 black parents and is played by a mixed actress (Amandla Stenberg). I think they should've chosen Dominique Fishback instead, who played another character in the movie. And don't get me started on how they did Khalil's character. In the movie he reaches for a hairbrush, but in the book all he does is asks is Starr was okay and then he gets shot. They made him seem like he would make a dumb mistake like that. All I know is that NO Black person would reach for something in the car from a police interrogation. NONE.

They could of even kept the show titled Andi Mack. Andi is a creative person in canon what if she had a KZbin account or brand where she goes by Andi Mack because she likes the name, meanwhile her actual last name is an Asian one.

Plenty of ppl have surnames and first names that are from another culture. Think of how many Michaels there are who aren't irish. We do not shame and call it discrimination for your name to not be the same e culture, that itself is bigoted to assume all Chinese people in 5his case have to have chinese surnames which, mind you most characters do have, that isn't a bad thing like people amd this channel make it out to be

Yes, but language matters. You can’t call multiracial people simply “Black,” which a lot of people insist on doing. This is why biracial/mixed race people will continue to be cast in Black roles and the whitewashing complaints & drama will never end.

So the actress who plays Andi Mack is literally, black, asian, white, yet her character is only basically a fourth of a POC person??? Disney be finding loopholes for anything and everything, making ahows about buracial or multiracial people is great, but also why the loopholes? Why the no monolithic racial people???? It was progressive for it's time, it dealt with teen preganancy, her father coming jnto the picture to have a relationship with his daughter. But also, even biracial people are not a monolith, you have people that you would never think are biracial or multiracial, some do look mixed, some like one or the other or may favor one DNA over the other, a lot of ahows don't even showcase that. Why is representation so hard for people to do without taking jump cuts and loopholes and finding wiggle room to not showcase as they are, truly diverse. It even reminds me of the casting for Lilo and Stitch, they and other characters within that franchise were always portrayed as dark skinned indigenous Hawaiian people, then they come out with thia actress playing Nani I believe, and she doesn't look anything like Nani, she is indigenous but they found a loophole and casted a person who is so many shades lighter than the character, it was daunting because why couldn't they find a face who had the talent to play Nani? Disney has a lot of resources to do that, to scout, to have auditions, everything, getting new names out there who wanna be seen and get their chance at showing the world what they got. Disney has too much money to be doing fiddly bullshid like this.
