ANGER MANAGEMENT WAS JUST THE CHARLIE SHEEN SHOW

Following his real life breakdown and firing from hit show Two and A Half Men, series lead Charlie Sheen was then picked up by FX immediately for a brand new series.
Everyone's favorite tv show based on a 2003 Adam Sandler / Jack Nicholson film... Anger Management.
The show was hastily put together to capitalize off of Charlie's frequent TMZ appearances.
Because of this the show feels exactly like what it is ... A Charlie Sheen show and plead for attention.

Selma Blair is proof that "famous last words" aren't only spoken right before a person dies. At some point when she signed on, she must have said or at least thought something like, "Nice, steady paycheck, guaranteed ratings, interesting character. Hell yeah! I mean, it's a sitcom. How bad could it be?" and that definitely has to count.
@colealbinder2025

I always thought the show could have been more interesting if it really committed to being not a sitcom but a darkly funny comedy-drama about Charlie as this frustratingly charming and successful therapist that has to manage both his personal psyche and personal life with the ones of his patients. Think Rescue Me but with an anger management therapist. That version really could have been a change-up from what we were used to seeing Charlie as from Two and a Half Men and maybe gotten him some awards if handled well.

Like so many "modern" sitcoms, I think "Anger Management" could be improved by having an episode now and then that put the spotlight on a supporting character. One reason why "The Simpsons" still works (for me, at least) is because it explores the psyches of plenty of other characters besides the Simpson family. They've even managed to take Superintendent Chalmers - a character you're supposed to hate - and made him sympathetic for at least one episode. To me, Lacey (Noureen DeWolf) is one such unmined gem on this show. Due to her background alone - but also due to some other factors - she has the potential to be one of the most memorable characters in television history. She defies so many stereotypes. Here we have an Indian-American who not only "looks white" but rebels against the "model minority" myth of the South Asian. It sometimes seems as if all the Indian characters on TV are either (if male) science nerds (Kunal Nayyar on "The Big Bang Theory") or (if female) perfect little ladies (Parminder Nagra in anything). Lacey is an insecure shrew - an archetype you'd more likely expect to see, for example, a Jewish actress portraying. A minority who can "pass" and who's fully Americanized but still faces discrimination and feels unfulfilled? That's brilliant! Why can't we see a show about someone like HER? (Not to mention that DeWolf has that certain Roman-nosed "Indian princess" sort of beauty that's straight out of a Bollywood musical. What more could you want?)

It's interesting that you invoke Rescue Me, seeing as Denis Leary tried a darkly funny comedy-drama (albeit in an hour-long package) on FX not long after this went off the air, only for it to flatline and kill not only his career, but the careers of (virtually) everyone else involved in it.

@colealbinder2025 I'll concede a mild exaggeration, but I'll also argue that Hendrix benefitted from knowing (and bearing a passing resemblance to) Gillies. Technically you can fight fire with fire only really when fire is so large. You set up controlled flames around it so it quickly uses up the surrounding oxygen and goes out At least how I understand it, but rarely done for obvious reasons
@berechet.m
@berechet.m 3 жыл бұрын
Not really oxigen, more of burnable stuff, from what I've seen it's used to combat forest fires. If you set up a controlled fire, it will make a dead zone so that the forest fire can't expand, because anything that could be burned already burned. Btw, don't take what I said for granted because most of what I've learned comes from the first episode of Ben 10 (classic).

yes a controlled fire set and extinguished in the path of an out of control fire removes fuel for the fire causing it stop in its track then slowly fizzle out. thats fighting a large fire with a smaller fire. though the term "fighting fire with fire" is a metaphor for using weapons and/or tactics of your enemy against them, even if they are morally reprehensible to you. as in the guy you are fist fighting has a habit of punching his opponent in the nuts. you dont like to cheap shot but you punch _him_ in the nuts to end the fight.
@shinkaiatsuya950
@shinkaiatsuya950 3 жыл бұрын
@@Shiirow i know, but Vee said you do not fight fire with fire. Literally you, or more accurately firefighters, can in the right setting. Even not taking in literal sense sometimes you do have to fight fire with fire, but don't need to do something you think is morally reprehensible as it can be method or weapons. So if you think nut shots are bad and someone is fist fighting, including nut shots, then fist fight and don't do nut shots.

She never managed to break through, did she? But I think she was unforgettable as Sarah Michelle Gellar's little victim in CRUEL INTENTIONS. Gellar could have easily come off as just another snobby bitch, but instead she was the embodiment of pure evil, thanks (in part) to her predation on Blair. It REALLY made you want to see her get her comeuppance, even though her humiliation at the end is tragic.

"Fight fire with fire" may originate from the concept of backburning, a legitimate technique used to short-circuit wildfires. Excessive winds (not unlike those coming out of Sheen's mouth in this timeframe) may cause this to backfire and merge with existing wildfires or start new blazes, though, so discretion is advised in its application.

Martin Sheen is a professional and talented actor. That's the difference. Charlie isn't any of those things. He's in things I like, but he's rarely anything but a version of himself in it. He's bland when he tries drama. He's OK at comedy but things like Hot Shots, the gags, writing and other actors trounce him. I don't know anyone who thinks Topper Harley is the funniest character in those movies.

Fighting fire with fire is a common practise when doing forest fire management. You light a controlled fire to suck the oxygen that would otherwise be feeding the out of control fire. Risks are involved but sometimes it’s the only way to fight the fire, especially if you don’t have enough water around

Based on how you talked about it it sounds like this show was created specifically to avoid what happened with two and a half men. That show was said to be about charlie but was able to continue without him but this show was made where it couldn't exist without Charlie

I figured you said enough about this show in your last video on it. I must say, just a shame this show didn't last long. Should have continued on for a few years. This was really Charlie's redemption show after being fired from Two & A Half Men and then this gets canned quickly. 12:13 To be fair, Ashton's run lasted longer than I figured anyone expected it to be. It lasted longer than Charlie's second show by a whole two years. I think that should have lasted longer by about two or four more years to even his tenure with Charlie's eight year run.

There's something surreal to me about Charlie Sheen adapting a character originated by Jack Nicholson. Their surface traits aside, they are nothing alike. Nicholson means business. Even when he's playing a crazy character, he can still be intimidating. If Nicholson said he was going to kick my ass, even if he couldn't, I'd stay well away from him. If Sheen said he was going to kick my ass, even if he could, I would laugh in his face. Another problem is that Buddy Rydell knew his place. The film was really about David Buznik (Adam Sandler) and his quest to find self-confidence. Rydell put him through hell, but in the end, he got results. When Sheen plays a character nowadays, it's hard to believe there's any shred of altruism within him. There is one exception to the contrast, though. If DC Comics ever greenlights an adaptation of their BATMAN: WHITE KNIGHT graphic novel, I'd like to hear Sheen doing the voice of Jack Napier, who is portrayed as the complete antithesis of his personality in the 1989 film. I say this because I want Sheen to do serious roles again, and also because in the comic, artist Sean Murphy draws Napier to look a LOT like Sheen when Napier's out of the Joker makeup.

Its ironic how Charlie bad-mouthed Denise and tried to paint her as the bad guy, but she is the only one who (aside from Martin Sheen) has stood beside and supported Charlie and tried to remain positive about him.
