The thing is... this show is about teens and teens are also immature and irrational. In addition to having mental illness, it becomes blinding and shapes your perception and reaction to events. Yes her actions were irrational at times but to judge her so harshly from a point of view of being more emotionally mature and not having mental illness during similar events is ignorant. I think MANY teens going through the things Hannah did would react the way she did to some things. I don't condone the guilt tripping and blaming for most of the characters (Bryce deserves to be guilt tripped he's a fucking rapist) but the show is trying to get people to empathize with the characters struggles and try to understand where they're coming from.

To be fair all we could do was infer that Hannah was mentally ill. I didn't even get a diagnosis until my first suicide attempt. And she wasn't being "narcissistic". People with severe depression can have traits that make them more ego centric. Especially when it comes from trauma. I hate how people are like "I dOn'T uNdErStAnD wHy ShE kILLeD hErSeLf". Its called 13 reasons why as in 13 reasons why she chose to kill herself. But most importantly its HER 13 reasons why. She didn't tell Jessica that because she was raped that she should also think about killing herself. And in response to people saying that the increase in teen suicide is directly linked with 13 reason why are downplaying mental illness. Teen suicide has been going up regardless and it has more to do with the society that we have brought them up in. These teens were thinking about killing themselves before the show. All the show did was show them a character that they heavily related to because of mutual trauma and just like how hannah was a misunderstood teen among her peers and the adults in her life, they probably felt the same way. And I'm not saying that anyone should be blamed for suicide, but maybe if some of these teens were already in therapy or if their parents were more involved in their kids life, maybe they would have been able to focus on the bigger issue. The people that talk about 13 reason why poorly portraying mental illness always seems to come from the very people who either dont suffer from mental illness themself or people who think that their mild depression and had maybe one thought of suicide is the same as someone going through multiple hospitalizations or having a diagnosis like Bipolar, Borderline personality disorder, severe depression, PTSD, or even just severe anxiety. The show sucks but for 13 reasons other than its portrayal of mental illness. I admit that it triggered me watching it but it was because it felt spot on to how I felt. The only thing I disagreed with was her sending out the tapes because that made things worse for the other characters but at the same time I've had moments where I was angry at the people closest to me because I felt betrayed by them and wanted to kill myself and let them know how much they hurt me. In fact I feel like if went through what hannah did in high school without therapy, I probably would have done the same thing or at least left a note and let them know that I was hurting and why I was hurting. My father even tried to deny I had a mental illness before getting me a therapist, so the events that happened in the book/show aren't as far fetched as people are trying to make it seem.

Tw: mentions of rape and suicide 9:33 although I have not been sexually assaulted, I have been suicidal so I wanna challenge this thought. Rape is extremely damaging to the brain and for some ppl the flashbacks get so intense and real that it is hard to deal with it. Without proper therapy and treatment (which Hannah didnt have) it is highly likely that someone could commit suicide because of such an event.

I really felt uncomfortable with how you addressed what's wrong with Hannah's tape about Bryce. The fact that Hannah felt suicidal is NOT what's wrong with Hannah's tape. In fact, that's a very valid reason to feel suicidal and traumatized. First I wanna say you were very vague about what was wrong with his tape so that already threw me off bc that tape, out of all of them, seemed the most important, but when you asked us to take a minute and think if his tape was really necessary, I was baffled. Sexual abuse can cause serious mental health issues, such as PTSD, and as you mentioned, mental issues is a leading factor in many suicides. So the problem with Bryce's tape was absolutely NOT her feelings towards it afterwards. The problem with Bryce's tape was how it happened in the first place. Hannah went to hang out with him, alone in a hot tub, knowing all the horrible things he's done. That's the problem. I don't know if this is what you meant or not when addressing his tape, but bc you weren't very clear, it made me uncomfortable bc it felt like, how they oversimplified suicide, for a second, you oversimplified rape. I'm not trying to start anything or assume, bc honestly most of your points were pretty valid, it's just that this one, to me, just wasn't clear enough. It's such a touchy subject, which is why I definitely wouldn't want to accuse you of meaning it in a harmful way, I just sorta wanted to be sure even though you probably won't see this comment. If anyone read all of this, thank you and correct me if I'm misunderstanding anything. Edit: I also wanna say that Bryce is at fault for her rape. Yes she did put herself in a dangerous situation, but that in no way excuses his actions.

I kind of understand the whole “why didn’t you stay with me even though I told you to leave” thing. As someone who has struggled with mental illness for a long time, a lot of people with depression yearn for help and comfort but tend to push people away. I’ve had similar situations where, yeah looking back on it it’s a little silly to think about, but I’ve told people to leave me alone when I really needed someone to stay.
@jaricas8578

Nuffles and Neline Luminals Play I completely agree! It’s just that people with mental illness tend to have a distorted view of reality. I’m not faulting him by any means for leaving, he was being respectful and didn’t want to offend her. I just mean that I can see her side of it as well, as I’ve been on both sides of that kind of situation. I just find it very upsetting that so many people are mocking Hannah over this situation when it’s a very real scenario that a lot of depressed people deal with. that doesn’t maker her blaming him for that okay but it gives reasoning behind her actions

I understand your view and I don't like the serie very much either. But I disagree of minimizing her problems. Hannah was clearly depressed. Bullying, abuse, being stalked, losing friends can make a people depressed. And I have to say, people depressed have like a bad filter on their perceptions of the world. So, for me, it's kinda problematic to say what feelings are "valid or not". But I agree that the serie talks about the theme in a bad way. The series can trigger a depressed person. And I believe there are ways better to talk about this theme and warning people about it.

Exactly what I was thinking throughout this video . I love Sherliza,but I especially felt this way about the sexual assault tapes. She undermines her experience at the diner,and brings up the fact that it had happened to her as well in order to make Hanna's experience seem like nothing. People forget that Hannah was a literal child. And then she goes on to subtly victim blame by going on about how she was putting herself in danger. No . Bryce was putting her in danger. Hannah went into that tub because she was scared to deny his offer. And it made me extremely uncomfortable when she mentioned that "Bryce didn't deserve his own tape"yes,he did. And she dismisses Hannah's feelings towards literally witnessing someone getting raped. Watching someone get raped alone is extremely traumatic. And once again,Hannah was a child. A child watched someone get raped. And then she proceeds to justify what happens in the councilors office. The man literally told her to move on from being raped,and barely believed her because "a lack of evidence"and "what else could we do?". Obviously Hannah is going to be upset,she has every right to be. Sherliza was acting like Hannah owed him an explenation. She just wanted justice,she doesn't have to explain anything,she was traumatized. If someone tells you they've been raped,you believe them and you report it. Sherliza handled this terribly.

I have a ‘friend’ like Hannah, she blames anyone who was just a little mean to her for making her suicidal. A week ago she told me that last Halloween I made fun of her for cutting BUT SHE DIDNT EVEN TELL ME THAT SHE *THOUGHT* ABOUT CUTTING UNTIL LATE NOVEMBER, I started to feel REALLY guilty until I realized that I didn’t say anything close to that, my friends and I were just talking about random things AND IF I DID MAKE FUN OF HER MY OTHER FRIENDS WOULD TELL ME TO NOT MAKE FUN OF HER FOR THAT LMAO Also, fun fact, she made fun of me for YEARS but I didn’t blame her for completely destroying my self esteem. My real friends and I joke around with each other and we have fun doing it but she went WAYYYY too far. She made fun of things that I was already insecure about, I told her to stop but she didn’t AND NOW SHE’S BLAMING ME FOR HER WANTING TO KILL HERSELF PFFT OK. I’m definitely dropping her, I don’t care if she becomes even more ‘depressed’ she’s toxic as fuck. Oof if you read that entire thing you get a cookie 🍪

i had a “friend” like that, she would use me as her emotional punch bag, and blame me for her mental illness, sometimes she sometimes she invited me to sleep at her house, because she wasn’t feeling good, and then she would yelled at me, saying that i was horrible, and making me go way in the middle of the night, just for the other day she call me saying that she didn’t wanted me to go. She said a hundred times that she was going to commit suicide. She was toxic, she was ill, i wasn’t a friend to her, if she was my friend that relationship isn’t be so abusive. I cut all my connection to her, has been 3 years, and i feel free. She didn’t kill herself, she needed help, but i’m no nurse to take care of her. One thing is to be by the side of a friend, and support them, other thing is to be the emotional garbage of someone, and live the illusion that is ok. sorry for any mistakes, english isn’t my first language!

I have a friend who literally told everyone she talked to that she was suicidal. No one ever took her seriously. One time I was just like, "No you're not, you just want attention. Actual suicidal people don't walk around telling random people they're suicidal." She's stopped since then. I know this because I myself had suicidal thoughts and once I told myself if I ever think about that stuff again, just hurry up and kill myself because those feelings were really horrible. It's not like I wanted to die, I just wanted my situation to change. Suicide and mental illness aren't jokes or fads.

14:56 HOW do people not pick up on how suicidal and depressed alex was? HOW are they so shocked that he attempted suicide? some of the signs weren't even subtle a list of signs: (suicidal) 1. attempting to drown himself 2. speeding and not giving a fuck about his or anyone's safety while everyone was shouting at him to slow tf down 3. tearing down suicide prevention posters "suicide's not an option? well clearly it is an option!" 4. expressing appreciation for the hungarian suicide song and leaving after his bandmate said people who find it beautiful are suicidal 5. said he had no plans for his future 6. "so if i kill myself, do you die too?" (depressed) 7. being self-destructive: engaging in violent behaviour even when he was clearly going to get hurt (fight with monty) 8. being withdrawn from his friends - he never seemed to engage in conversations unless they were talking about the tapes, never looked like he was having a good time, told people to leave him alone 9. losing interest in jazz band (quitting and calling it "pointless"), being unable to concentrate during practice 10. intense guilt for hannah's death in comparison to everyone else (other than maybe, clay) 11. emotional outbursts (when he got disproportionately worked up and because monty nearly rammed into him) 12. little appetite & threw away his lunch. unexplained body pains (alex suffers from stomach pains) are also a symptom

Let’s not forget that they only started doing trigger warnings was because they didn’t do it for the first season and got backlash not only from people who watched, but the association that monitors the movies and media we watch . This show was so fucking toxic and as someone who has attempted and is still struggling with mental illness , I watched up to season 2 and felt like the show not once depicted depression realistically, or at least for me . It’s a show that was made supposedly to educate people and tell the story of many people who have mental illness and speak for them but all it does is over generalize and trigger people . I’m surprised they even made it this far by season 2. I gave up and didn’t want to watch season 3 at all

it's the fact they trivialize all these serious issues. oh you got raped and bullied? then it's totally justifiable to want to shoot up a school or commit suicide! you didnt have those things happen to you? well, then there's no excuse for you to be depressed! that's the message this show sends. the characters only defining feature is the abuse or mental illness they went through. and they can't even bother to portray those things correctly. hell, the main character's only trait is 'i had a crush on this girl and apparently i'm not as awful as the rest of the characters, have sympathy for me'. the thing with the revenge suicide is fucking awful. the whole premise sounds like a bad episode of South Park. It pisses me off how preachy they are. If they didn't claim that the show had such an important message, it would still be bad, but at least they'd acknowledge how unrealistic and stupid the show is. the only way this show could actually be meaningful, was if the story was told through Hannah, her story of recovery, her struggles of dealing with suicidal thoughts. maybe it's about her life after she tried committing suicide. she can still make the damn tapes. for all i care, make her some sort of vigilante justice fighter that finds out things about awful people and brings them to light using those tapes. no one would see the broken suicidal girl as a threat, because they wouldn't expect her to be strong. but oh wait, she's dead. just like my brain after watching 2 minutes of the show.

Bullying was one of the other things I had to endure in hs. Bullying leaves permanent scars and sometimes can be haunting but whenever suicide crosses my mind, it’s never because of anyone. But that’s just my experience with suicidal thoughts and tendencies. Tried to watch 13RW but I can’t even finish the first episode. You dont always see the symptoms on suicidal ppl. They should have shown that more on the show. They should have shown how much build up Hannah had before she snapped, not just how she acted around others pissed and angry. They should had more clips where she was alone, sad and thinking about all the stuff she has gone thru. I have read couple of suicide letters myself and have never met one where they blame ppl about stuff. They usually think they are ones to blame, they suck and that everything happening is their fault wich is not the case. Instead of blaming others on the show, I think they should have shown how Hannah felt guilty about stuff. Not how she felt like others are the reason she commited suicide. Also.. dont romanticize suicide like this show did. Show makes it seen its easier to end it all than go thru it all. Show more how it affected family and friends, how its hard to find routines after losing someone. Dont act like its just going to be normal and loving after someone dies.

Saturne Really because in death she got revenge in all the people she wanted. She got to have the last word. We get to see a hole school affect by her death (which doesn’t happen in real life). We see people constant blaming themselves. This tell mentally ill attention seekers, see how much people will care if you kill yourself? Heck, she even has a romantic interest so hung up on her he sees her everywhere. Yeah, no romanizing at all, if you like fine. But as every professional has said it is romanizing suicide.
@ahsholic1859
@ahsholic1859 4 жыл бұрын
Saturne I have watched all of the 3 seasons and cannot relate any of them. Even if she had borderline, they should have shown it better. Show how she suffers on the inside. Show the ppl the other side of her, not just how she couldnt socialize with others. I have been diagnosed w depression 2014 and i have had my good days but most of them are bad. And in my opinion they are only showing the middle part of it. How Hannah is pissed but not what all drove her at that point and how she really feels. And yeah, they are romanticizing her, making it seem like everyone is missing her, how she was right, making it seem like suicide is an option (there is atleast 4 suicide attempts in the show; Hannah, Tyler, Alex and Bryce) and suddenly you’re getting help after the attempt. It doesnt go like that. Not everyone tells if they tried to kill theirselfs and gets help, its not that simple and easy. They should show that. They should bring up how guilty others felt, how it wasnt so easy to move on with life like Hannah’s father had. He suddenly got new family, no. Its not that easy and i know it because ive been thru it.

I feel like this show encourages people to victimise themselves and blame others for their suicidal thoughts, you wouldn’t believe the amount of times I’ve had people blame me for wanting to kill themselves over literally nothing. I had a housemate say I was the reason why she wanted to commit suicide just because I wasn’t talking to her that day because I was LITERALLY in my room writing an assignment. And another girl said she wanted to kill herself because I told her to leave me alone after she verbally abused me completely out of nowhere. And I’ve just seen this mindset becoming more and more common, a lot of this stuff I’ve experience from people at my uni, and I know a lot of them watched 13 reasons why and loved it.

the fact that Hannah outed Courtney in the tapes, hand in hand with accusing her of being a reason why she killed herself, is really terrifying. Like, if you wanna do some character analysis Courtney's tape, Clay's tape and to an extent Zach's tape are similar in that they only exist because Hannah already has really low self esteem and doesn't have like, the emotional resources to deal with rejection. So, the tapes she directs at Courtney, Zach, and Clay are a sort of desperate, spiteful attempt to drag them down and make her look better. It's in the same vein as bullying. The show doesn't frame it that way, but it's really the only way any of it makes sense. Think about what happened to Courtney. Imagine you're a high school kid, maybe you're questioning your sexuality or maybe you know what's up but you're closeted, and you have a friend who you maybe have a crush on and you end up kissing them. You're drunk so your defenses are down, but ultimately you can kiss them because you feel safe with them, and they kiss you back. Now imagine how jarring it is to go from that to realising that someone you don't know is outside the window taking photos of you. The thing about the closet is that it provides you safety to realise who you are and like, fortify yourself so that when you come out you'll be ready. That safety is, as far as you know, gone. That's traumatic. Courtney not wanting to talk to Hannah immediately after that was understandable. She was panicking. Now imagine that after that, the other person kills themself and publishes a suicide note which outs you to everyone who receives it. That's a living nightmare. Can you imagine the toll that takes? That was something which 100% in a show which actually thinks about its characters and writes them as having like, thoughts and motivations and stuff, that could be explored in a really interesting way.

I don't care if I am harsh, but the way they portrayed things is just ridiculous and messed up. Suicidal people don't want to kill themselves for revenge. No they DON'T want to die, they are just tired of living. At the end I see Hannah as the bad guy.

That's not the issue though. The point is that they send him to prison for Bryce's death when he had nothing to do with it, in fact he was probably the one who cared about him the most, even when they stopped being friends. Yes, what he did throught the whole show was blatantly horrible, I didn't even felt different when I found out about his background to be honest (which, please, was the most generic and cliché plotwist ever), he should have been punished for his mistakes and own up for his f* ups, but send him to prison, for something that he wasn't even close to do? for what, protecting Alex, because he was ''a tormented good guy''? No. The show tries to justify this with the fact that Alex ''just made a mistake'', therefore shouldn't face the consecuences of killing Bryce because he already suffered too much, and because Monty has done so much damage, it's okay if he pays for his crimes going for being accused of killing his best friend. Alex should be the one in jail, probation if you find that too much, and Monty should be charged for assaulting Tyler and punished for what he has being doing to his classmates in school. Period.

Look, I hated this show too and found Hannah really annoying. But just because these aren't legitimate reasons to kill yourself or blame other people for it, doesn't mean you need to invalidate or normalize the genuinely cruel things other characters did to her. A lot of these are violations of privacy and trust that are legitimately upsetting. If you want to make a point about how none of them amounts to holding others accountable for suicide, then do that. But don't act like it's ok to violate consent or dismiss these things. That's just a weak argument and as one-sided as called them 13 Reasons Why.

@ladynoluck
@ladynoluck 4 жыл бұрын
ClaireAKokE But it was more than that. The whole school treated her like a slut because they didn’t believe her. Even her own friends believed the rumor and/or fed into the rumor. So, no one believed her. Then, the stalker photos, where her questioning of her safety/privacy was ignored until the photos came out (and still no one really did anything about it). The girl she kissed lied about Hannah to protect herself. The slut rumor led to Marcus literally trying to sexually assault/molest her at their date (not just “make a move”!). Just because you have had at least 25 encounters like just one of those pictured is not equivalent to everyone you know and trust starting to not believe you at all and instead believe and support bad rumors that lead to constant threats and acts of abuse and sexual violence. In that climate, I imagine anyone might really struggle with their mental health, especially someone with depression or suicidal ideation. I hate this series, but it is irresponsible to say that just because us girls have some of the experiences depicted that it is at all equivalent to the bullying and trauma Hannah was subjected to. I have been catcalled, touched, and flirted with by a stranger when I wasn’t in a safe place, and, no, I personally am not suicidal and cannot see being suicidal because of that, but that is not what Hannah is experiencing. She’s experiencing those things every day at school and every time she encounters a classmate and her only friends have left her over supporting it all. Again, hate the series for suggesting suicide is a reasonable decision, but that doesn’t mean we should minimize the actual level of violence and trauma and abuse she faced because non-fictional girls are actually dealing with that level of it and saying that it’s not that bad/get over it we all deal with it is really harmful. Just had to get that off my chest...
@shayla106
@shayla106 4 жыл бұрын
LNL Not minimizing it, but for it to effect her to this degree she couldn’t have a healthy mental state to begin with. Next, many people which out to her and she pushed them away. She also seemed to be more revenged oriented than depressed ,hence the tapes and asking Clay why he left after she shouted for him to leave (this implies he could have saved her, which shifts the blame.) With the way she’s portrayed in the show I don’t think people are minimizing it. I blame bad writing.
@ladynoluck
@ladynoluck 4 жыл бұрын
@@shayla106 I agree that bad writing contributes to a lot of the problems, and I absolutely hate basically everything about the series, but the writers at least made an effort to present the bullying, alienation, abuse, and sexual violence as not isolated instances, but rather most of her entire life at that point. Everyone she reached out to, when she thought things could get better decided to stop trusting her or use her or was a source of/contributor to the abusive climate of her life. I agree that it is bad writing that good people who helped or tried to help her were treated as equivalent to the people who used and abused her just because they couldn't read her mind, but my only point, the point of my last comment, was solely that we can't equate everyday rape culture and sexism to the constant abuse and violence she was dealing with from everyone, even those she trusted the most. I just don't think it is right to brush that off as equivalent to isolated instances. Also, please know that I am not making this point to defend Hannah because I really do hate so much about her and this series. I am only making this specific point for the real people under similar constant threat who should not have their experience treated as equal to isolated threats and situations and thus treated as less serious because of that.

I watched a little of it when it first came out before I realized what it was about. I had to stop due to PTSD. My dad was abusive when I was a kid and then the last thing I said to him before he killed himself was "I hate you." His suicide letter consisted of blaming a 9 year old for saying "I hate you" and then he blamed my mom. I also have struggled with severe depression and suicidal attempts because the PTSD along with my several health issues is alot to handle. Im 24 and bedridden and am left to be sick and in pain all the time due to the cut of pain meds and the doctors who are unable to cure me. My conditions have almost killed me a few times but the doctors always bring me from the brink of death just to continue to be sick and unable to do anything. Anyway, my point is that this show was triggering for many reasons.One thing isn't going to make you decide to kill yourself or want to do so. It the combination of all these things happening and the inability to get your head above water. You joked about "Oh this happened, so she wants to kill herself" but its the combination of mental health issues and life just constantly fucking you in the ass that makes you consider it.

During the video I was questioning whether it’s because I’m just mentally ill and don’t know it, she never passed through extreme emotion/bad situation, or if she’s just a stronger individual than I am. but- I’ve been way better this year on having thoughts about suicide however, even now in my healthiest state I realize that shit like this adding up, can be over-whelming and can cause you to feel suicidal. She was pointing out how statistics say the #1 reason is mental illness, but as we know, being raised in a toxic environment can give you mental illness eventually- anyways, those statistics aren’t 100%, how many people don’t go to therapist in order for these statistics to come to light? Like... and also even without mental illness you have to take into account teenagers experience life differently than an adult who already has a stable sense of self etc. So yeah. While I appreciate your input and respect your personal feelings and thoughts about the show, I think you are not only quite Insensitive but vague yourself in some instances. I am warning whoever is reading this: welcome to my Ted Talk. You oversimplified the tapes and stated what happened in one sentence, while ignoring how someone might feel about that. You can't seriously say that you wouldn't feel like shit after seeing how someone delibaretly goes out of their way to hurt you. Especially when you have lashed out at them before; you know why you did it and justified it to yourself. Someone else doesn't know that and we tend to forget why someone might be "unreasonable" when we are just as unreasonable ourselves. So, you think that person hurt you because they don't care about what happened to you in the first place. That's *especially* likely for someone who feels like shit already, who has been traumatized and is depressed, like Hannah. It reinforces the loneliness, the feeling of having to fight against the world, that there's no love and nothing worthwhile. Now, I don't really blame you for not thinking about that. Heck, I've forgotten to consider other people's feelings and I probably will again; but when talking about mental illness, when talking about a show that's oversimplified suicide in the first place... I think it's inappropriate to dismiss Hannah's feelings when that's the whole point: even though it's been horribly butchered into a bad message to viewers. Now, I mostly agree with what you said. Hannah was frustratingly unreasonable. That was a great way to show how someone might fall into depression through the amalgamation of little things, how they try to find every little reason to justify killing themselves. That's also how I interpreted the title, as someone who has tried to do that before. The series fell flat on its nose by not telling the viewers this; it was literally just "oooh, bullying bad, Hannah martyr, everyone else is at fault" instead of showing how goddamn unreasonable it all is. They literally tell us, just like you said, that there's universal reasons for suicide when there's in fact not. Instead of showing how a depressed person drives *themselves* to suicide, not other people. They should've corrected what the book did wrong as well. No need to unnecessaryily demonize other people who acted perfectly normal, whereas Hannah who is just as normal gets to be somehow justified in being mean, too. She freaking blamed *13* people for her own, self induced *death*. She's the worst goddamn character on the show! And instead of saying that depressed people oftentimes turn out to be the villains of their own story, they tell us that she's this pure angel who got wrecked by the world. Now on to what I think could correct the whole mess: Why not show an internal conflict in Hannah? Instead of listening to the depressive thoughts, she should question them, try to get help, encourage depressed viewers to question their own depression. That would have been great. That would have sent a great message. Heck, they could've simply altered the ending and make Hannah realize that she has been the unreasonable one all along, that there's actually no reason for killing herself, causing her to refrain from mailing the tapes, get help, etc. Realizing that as a suicidal person is the key to prevent suicide, to start treating yourself. Because your thoughts tried to justify your death logically, showing that there's actually no logic at all is the first step in battling it. The only thing that scared some depressed people away from suicide is the extremely horrifing suicide scene and that's totally unacceptable for a show that wanted to open a conversation.

I don't agree with the part of your commentary, where you specifically were saying that the reasons Hannah had aren't good enough to kill herself. The implication then, is that there are then valid reasons to do so. People commit suicide, for being being bullied, for being called a slut, for being raped, for all number of reasons. Obviously blaming other people for your own suicide is not at all the right response either, I agree. We have a responsibility , to be kinder to each other and realize our actions can have ripple effects. This show did not approach the issue of suicide prevention in the most tactful or effective way. The issues Hannah face is the reality for a lot of people, it is serious and not something to scoff at or say, "not good reason to kill yourself". We need to figure out how to approach these issues in a nuanced, thoughtful, compassionate way.

There’s a reason only a small portion of our population commit suicide. Honestly the show portrays Hannah as a attention seeker who wanted revenge.

@@shayla106 Suicide is quickly becoming the number one cause of deaths in America, and in many other countries, including Canada, Japan, India etc. It is not only a small portion of our population. The statistics will give you a reality check. My friend works as an emergency operator, the sheer number of suicide calls she gets on a daily basis will give you pause. It's not quick fix solution, but I think approaching it with more understanding and making sure we teach kids resiliency, the importance of actively speaking to a trusted adult is vital. What you deem as "minor things" can pile up quicker than you think, before your buried in an avalanche and feel like there is no better solution.

Why does does being suicidal only have to be because they had a mental illness I don’t get it, as individuals we react and respond different to situations, some people are weak in character, others are stronger so saying “this or that reason was not enough to commit suicide” well yeah it may seem like that to you because you can take things better and that’s wonderful but there are others that are very vulnerable. So it is wrong for some of you to say how stupid the reasons were but that’s what YOU THINK to others it may be more than enough, so I disagree with the fact that she said the reasons weren’t even that bad.

I never watched this show, since I had been suidicdal 16 years ago and feared that... I would burst with anger. It never occurred to me ONCE to kill myself because of what other people did to me. On the contrary - my love for certain people was what kept me from taking my life. And I have friends who felt the urge too or even tried - and none of them ever blamed others for their feelings. I also know too many people who have experienced other dark sides of life. Heavy mobbing. Severe disabilities. Rape. Orphaned at a young age. Abuse. War. They suffered, yet most of them never thought about ending their life. Like it's already been said correctly: The reason for suicidal thoughts is mental illness. This emptiness, the feeling of being lost and without hope, the bottomless pit inside your heart... it all comes from within. If you know this feeling, this way of thinking... seek help. There is hope. There is ease. Depression has been a part of my life for more than 20 years now and since I opened up about it and started getting therapy it's been getting better and better. Seriously: Get to know your illness. You can only break free, if you know what it is that ties you down.

My Love for BTS is no coincidence The thing is, the original poster’s comment implies opinion. You don’t necessarily have to state “In my opinion” to phrase that this is your opinion. The implication that “most people” do something is a common sense argument. Common sense arguments are created from something read or said by another person that whoever is creating the argument uses as a base and then injects their own beliefs and biases upon that base. Creating their argument. Every common sense argument is loosely based on something that the person has read or heard in the past and is beefed up with personal opinion. It’s easy to figure out which arguments are common sense by the use of words like “most”, “some”, “almost” etc because by using these words they aren’t actually fully committing to their arguments. This is a huge part of Methodology and one I’ve unfortunately had to suffer through lectures hearing over and over again 😂

I get it. The show wasn’t perfect in any means but….. minimizing Hannah’s problems isn’t okay I’m sorry…… it wasn’t one thing that made her s/icidal it was one thing on top of another. Like you try to shake off hate but there is only so much one person can take. I was s/icidal and nobody was there for me I lost a family member and all my friends left me and I was cyberbullied and one thing on top of another is what caused it. Justin was someone she trusted and he broke that trust but it was Bryce who sent the photo. Jessica believed untrue rumors about her friend which hurt. Alex did Hannah on the list to be cruel. Tyler was a creep and sent a very private photo around school making everything worse for Hannah. Courtney lied and ruined Hannah’s reputation even more. Marcus basically sexually harassed Hannah and humiliated her. Hannah having horrible reputation & people being cruel needed those cute notes that zach stole. Ryan stole her poem that was very private and personal and she was hurt even more. Sheri and Hannah are responsible for Jeff dying. Hannah was frozen unsure what to do during Jessica and Bryce r!pe scene which devastated her. Clay just watched things happen, he left when he shouldn’t have, and yelled at Hannah for crying over Jeff and the party. And she thought she could trust at least him. And Bryce again. Everyone was in their underwear in the hot tub. She got in with Jessica and people she basically trusted. Bryce got in with Hannah, she got uncomfortable and started to leave he didn’t let her. He being a baseball player was obviously stronger and Hannah couldn’t get away and I can obviously see how mentally traumatizing this was. Not only is she constantly called a s/ut, but she felt like she lived up to that reputation and people made her feel worthless. The counselor should have seen her pain. He should have stopped her and shouldn’t have told her to move on. So she felt she wasn’t worth it. So after all that……it would be hard for anyone to stay happy. I found the characters relatable and wanting them to be happy. Alex showed signs of being s/icidal in season 1. Tyler was s/xually assaulted and I completely understand why he tried to do that. I didn’t see the purpose of ani tbh. But eventually she grew on me. These are flawed characters because people are flawed we are imperfect. And I feel bad for the actors they don’t deserve the hate. This is my take on everything…. I did hate how the k/lled off Justin though. He had such growth and he was just suddenly k/lled off like that I sobbed. - But this is my thoughts. Nobody is the same. Everyone’s symptoms are different and we need to stop labeling symptoms because it’s not the same for everyone.
