Oh my goodness, I'm so glad someone on youtube is finally talking about Jackie Ormes! I actually made a comic based off of her and her characters for a black history/women's history project in an advanced drawing and painting class when I was in 11th grade and had to scour the internet for any information about her. And as a black non-binary person assigned female at birth, it really makes me happy that women like her existed!!! Love your content by the way!

We briefly covered the black arts movement this semester as well and I don't think people understand Black people were not allowed to have our own hands in telling our stories because early depictions of Black people in American entertainment were propaganda meant to dehumanize us and JUSTIFY enslavement. American minstrelsy was wild. Also when film was becoming popular, the first film shown in the White House was Birth of A Nation, which praised the KKK and painted Black people as violent savages. Representation is that deep. So much of early Black art was dedicated to taking back the narrative being painted to literally justify putting us in chains and taking away our humanity. That kind of stuff doesn't just fade away. We largely focused on plays and theater but this is all interconnected. Thank you for this video.

To answer your question of what Black female showrunner of an animated series I know. There's Janice Burgess, the creator and executive producer of Backyardigans. I love this video I've heard of Jackie Ormes, but seeing a video go into her history was nice to see.

It's also important to know and find out about atuff that our people have done, our people did ao much, they became entertainers, cartoonists, they went into animation, singing, activism, there are still not too many movies and shows as compared to like the 90's because far as my knowledge goes they would can a lot of them. So it's always nice when I hear that black people made space in so maby ways and it makes me kinda emotional and happy to learn that my people's history in thia country is actually very vast and it's not just what school decided to teach us cause there is so much about black people that we know absolutely nothing about regarding this country, so stuff like this video is wonderful to see ❤😊

YES!!! So to clear things, I am not black, east asian actually, so I did not necessarily see an issue with tiana being a frog but I definitely want to see more of her as a person, thriving as a chef, business woman, wife, and princess!! She is my favorites female characters from Disney, along with Cinderella, Jane, Kida, Mulan, Amelia.

This isn't about animation but Black women authors...look up Invented Lives: Narratives of Black Women 1860-1960 from Mary Ellen Washington. She compiled excerpts from literature written by Black women in the named time period and explains a lot of history of how their works would get swept under the rug even as there was a ton of attention on work from Black men. During a lot of those decades a lot of literature from Black men heavily props up Rugged Individualism, but the literature such as is in the above book often paints pictures of the importance of communal strength, or just tells tales of the lives of the women living in those times and how the men and people around them affected their lives. A *really* good example of how much this happened is the filmed conversation between Nikki Giovanni and James Baldwin. Baldwin was a big part of a lot of that female suppression unfortunately, as much as I will always love his work..but if you watch that conversation the number of times Mz Giovanni catches him up and he has to rapidly pivot to absorb new information is pretty wild. Anyway great video (aaas always!) Edit: here are the names of the featured authors: Harriet Jacobs, Frances Ellen Watkins Harper, Pauline E. Hopkins, Fannie Barrier Williams, Marita O. Bonner, Nella Larsen, Zora Neale Hurston, Ann Petry, Dorothy West, and Gwendolyn Brooks.

i've seen her work before but that is just because in my undergrad in art i did really just an absolutely undiagnosed amount of research on this kind of graphic art trying to develop a style. anyway jackie ormes stands out for all the best reasons. she really helped me learn to draw darker complexions in this cool vintage style and make it really beautiful. but her work wouldn't cross your desk if you don't seek it out - even if you're majoring in art! which i was! sad.

i feel like you are right, we need more black women in the animation industry, but calling Tiana an amphibian and Libby a black stereotype was kinda dumb Libby was not a black stereotype, it was the typical 10 year old fashionate girl (or at least i never saw her as a black stereotype growing up with the show), jimmy neutron always had stereotypical characters, just like jimmy neutron being your typical nerdy tech guy, or the dumb unaware parents, but i never felt it disrespected the African Americans like that, if anything, jimmy neutron was a lot more disrespectful towards Asian race and culture than anything else And Tiana is lowkey kinda cool why you gotta hate on ma girl like that smh

@@RoseCalyx well lately there hasnt been another white princess in the making (or not that i know of) they are trying to represent a lot more atneceties as well and i doubt Tiana is the last black princess considering her popularity I should probably mention, i live in Argentina, the presence of this princess here might be very popular but not for other countries, so maybe i am a little bias lol (Love that tails pfp btw mania art style is so dang cute)
