It's all about building that tension. I used to do standup(wasn't too bad, but not great, I have an old video on my page if you wanna check it out)and have tons of respect for Anthony. He's an amazing writer. Most comedians pull from life experience(myself included.) You don't see many pure joke writers like Anthony these days, and his delivery/timing are incredibly precise.

I find his delivery to be FAR too slow in general. He's not funny enough to drag jokes out for as long as he does. Leslie Jones is the worst though. She repeats every line she says like a preacher. It takes forever to get to a punchline.

Idk if it's just me but I feel like Anthony is hella underrated. I don't feel like he's talked about enough for how damn good he is. I mean in this joke he purposefully digs himself into a hole with the set-up, just to win everyone back with the baby line. You can feel the tension in the room right before his punchline, which in itself sets up the rest of the jokes. It's just brilliant and ballsy and he's always tip toeing those two lines. He's a top of the line "word artist" lol.

Of Plagues that is an extremely narrow view of comedy, plenty of comedians have been funny without being horribly offensive. Being offensive is the easiest and cheapest type of comedy.
