Nope. As long as the problem you are asking them to fix is not caused by your attachment. Once a camera cover (those sliding things you stick on top of the camera) caused the screen to crack. So that was not covered under warranty Seen a lot of macbooks which get their screen repaired for free (from functional issues) even though they have stickers on the back of the lid.

​@@geraldnzira2052should be SSD. the concern of the first commenter is from Hardrives magnetically inputting data on those disks inside. Ofc if you have a strong magnet outside of the Hardrive, it kind defeats the purpose.

Nah they’re mounted at the bottom so it won’t be putting that much extra force on the hinge

look, if you're familiar with torque, then it's pretty simple, the closest a weight is to the axis, the least force it applies to it, he kept that ssd on the lower side so there is no issue

I’ve been doing this for years. I took one of the hard shell cases and glued a huge piece of Velcro over the entire lid case and boom exactly what your wanting.

If you put the smooth side (opposite of the hooks) on there, it shouldn't be a problem.

you should try a heat and stress test. These things like SSDs and hubs tend to over heat a lot and the velcro might not be a good idea

The sound of velcro when you remove stuff out really grinds my gears. I've no problems with nails on chalk boards but this I have problems with!

One big problem I see happening is the hinge is not designed to hold extra weight so it would quickly wear out your hinge. You could cover the top 2/3s of the back in patches for fun customisation and use the bottom 1/3 for hubs and such but you really don’t want to be putting a whole lot of extra weight on your screens hinge

I do this but with Velcro dots . You should put the SSDs low to avoid stressing the hinge .

You could alternatively buy a cheap clip-on plastic cover for you MacBook and just modify it by adding rows of Velcro strips on that instead. That way you can take it on and off and keep you idea affordable. Simple DIY stuff.

Wow this is a super genius way to break the monitors. If you know how powerful velcro is, then you know it can pull something heavy. I always have a hard time rearranging my pedal board because Velcro sticks too well

There's different types, man. 3M makes a superfine type (tiny hooks (a LOT of tiny hooks) + tiny loops (feels very soft - almost like felt) . It sticks very well, but doesn't take too much force when you want to take it apart.

YOOOOO this is exactly what i did, but slightly different, I took a nice looking rectangular metal sheet, rounded off the edges and applied a skin, then I attached strong magnets on my ssd and dongle, works like a charm and looks slick and better than a velcro~ Edit: It's been more than one and half a year now and everything is still fine, hinge is fine, all good and running smooth!

I’ve been doing this for years on my on-set MacBooks, the trick is keeping the weight low and towards the hinge. Usually running 2x 4tb ssds and a hub. Any cheap case and strips of Velcro will do. Never had an issue with a failed hinge. Oh and use the dual lock Velcro.

It’s a great idea and i have used it in the past but there is one slight problem, if the accessories you add to the back are too heavy it can shorten the lifespan of the screen hinge

Cool idea. I see this working best if only the bottom half (closest to the hinge) were Velcro. The extra weight would not strain the hinge as much.

i've done it with my imac when i had it, looked kinda hilarious with four 2.5" drives. also - glue a piece of velcro into your tripod, you can easily hold lens caps or other accesories.

Just a bit of advice, hooks last much much much longer than loops so it would be wiser to stick the longer lasting Velcro side to the expensive object with more Velcro traffic.

Even as an apple ecosystem user I still hate how they’ve limited users (especially “pro” users) by reducing port selection. I mean, no ethernet port? WiFi has gotten really good but still won’t beat a cable in terms of stable connections. I still use a 2012 mbp maxxed out but considering to get the M1 MacBook air for when I leave my desk.

it seems like the kind of thing they do at the space station or in an environment with a lot of money (to just get new hinges whenever it wears out) but space is constrained / practical function is a priority but the accelerated wear of the hinge for the rest of us who want to keep our macbooks in great condition after 5-7 years of daily use would not be so good. depends on how much faster it'll loosen the hinge i'd imagine.

Just gotta plug slipdrive holders. Best 12$ I've ever spent. It really makes life easier on airplanes specifically. But honestly I never even take out my external ssd. It just lives there. Probably will add a second one in the future.

Word of caution: I did this and had an external harddrive on it all the time and eventually the hinge got looser and looser leading to the screen not being very adjustable anymore. Say that to say make sure you take it off the accessory/device when you're not using it!

That’s so cool, but when I look at valcro I always think about it when it wears out, I prefer magnets if they don’t damage the product honestly

We get it, you want more holes. Most of us are fine with it the way it is. If you can afford a Mac u can afford a cheap dongle if you really need one. I have one for my mouse and keyboard, most of the time it just sits there unused. Change drive? I hear you, but hey.. u don’t like it, buy sth else. Speed, good battery, awesome screen and ppl still complain about shit that’s been going on for ages. Just don’t buy it

Been doing this for years. It sticks to any bag or sleeve as you try to store your laptop. Trick is hook side of the Velcro on the dongles and drives, loop side on the laptop.
