Constructing the Hacienda Del Dorado (live stream): goo.gl/9qIYjG
A huge war between The Golden Empire (Yellow Crazy Ants) and mites has been underway and we initially hoped exposing the ants to lemons would help rid them of their mites. However, 4 weeks later the mites have persisted and after speaking with some biologists we learned that the ants needed to be moved out of their home asap. By popular vote, the Golden Empire's new home was going to be a huge planted terrarium, one we call the Hacienda Del Dorado. Watch the drama unfold as the ants continue forward against this epic war vs mites.
Thank you to Dr. Brian Fisher of Antweb.org, Dr. Kaitlin Campbell, and Raymond Mendez for the helpful info on the ant mites. Thank you Andrew Smith of Formiculture.com for the photo of the phoretic mites.

@AntsCanada - Suggestion, use your Aquarium Tank water to water your Terrarium plants. Plenty of nutrients in that water. A simple drop on those air plants and bit more by the trees/ferns. Will do them great in providing certain nutrients Fish Water produce.

Filtered water which you do have in Tank water. Tends to contain lot of nutrients which is good for plants. That is why Aquaponics is a thing. Plants grow really well in such nutrient rich water.

Having a webcam stream 24/7 doesn't cost much at all as long as you're not doing 4k60fps or something. Just have it focus on the main area of activity (the feeding area for ex.) and just let it do its thing.

I have a question and maybe a possible video idea. How do you manage all of your ant colonies? For me when I watch your videos each colony seems to have a different need and care that they require. How do you keep up with the cleaning, feeding, and maintenance of each one? Even back when you used to have your dragon and bird, so many lives to take care of and millions of mouths to feed. What is a "day-in-the-life" of taking care or your ants from getting the feeders (maintaining your feeder colonies, something I will also like to learn more about) to cleaning to everything in between like planning the new homes for your ants and treating them when something like mites appears or this "mysterious" fungus (very interested in knowing what that is). Generally, what is your schedule for your ants? Does this change when you travel? TL;DR: HOW DO YOU KEEP UP WITH IT ALL? Sorry for the long question I really love your channel!

IDK. I think it was all fair for the three colonies. All of them just had their nests upgraded. Bigger one for the fire nation. Longer one for the dark knights. More natural one for the golden empire. They all had different needs and the upgrades were appropriate.

Also mites have very short life spans and lay only a handful of eggs in their lifetime(which is between one-several days). But that also means mites can evolve and reproduce very fast. Mites don't have eyes but navigate with their sense of smell. Which is lemon juice is inaffected after the first few days or weeks.

yeah, I didn't understand why he did this, either. They'll just travel with them. They might suffer a little in that the other ones who aren't attached to the ants might be left behind, but it won't take long for them to start up again, surely? Needs to somehow disinfect them before moving them. I read somewhere that using another insect to kill the mites could be a good idea...

Darc Gibson I'm not sure but I think the reason behind the large terrarium was that they can move to other places in the terrarium to rid themselves of the mites.

The plants, Bonzai trees, the bush, vines, driftwood. Most of them don't require soil or water so the mites can't feed on them. There is good nesting spots to defend the ants. The mites will grow into adult mites that help the ants because they are feeding on the bonzais.

I'm not sure where I read this, so please forgive me if this information is inaccurate. I think you should add some small chunks of raw amber to the nest. Ants use amber for disinfectant. Drop some chunks in and see if they take them down to the brood chamber to rub on the larvae and pupae. Put a big piece and see if they rub on it. You can hide the amber somewhere in the enclosure if you think it's unsightly.

AntsCanada I saw your vido on weaver ants and the one on the Atta genus. I'm a plant nerd, so I was wondering if you have heard of “ant plants” or Myrmecophytes There are over 100 genera of plants that form mutualistic relationships with plants. The most interesting of these form either a caudex or a rhizome that ants inhabit. At least some of them actually form tunnels for the ants beforehand, kind of like the plant is growing it's own formicarium. Many species are also epiphytic, allowing ants that would normally live on the ground to have colonies far above the ground. Lecanopeteris, Hydnophytum and Myrmephytum live in your area. Lecanopeteris are “ant ferns”, and are not too hard to get and they can be grown in a house. Crematogasters and a few other genera will live in Lecanopeteris. There's also an ant species in Fiji that actually cultivates an ant plant, and they are totally dependant one one another, not unlike Attas and their fungus. Anyways, it would be really cool if you could do a video about them, because it's another really interesting form of symbiosis between ants and other species.
@hansb.jaeyni8230
@hansb.jaeyni8230 7 жыл бұрын
Actually, one of the most intriguing things about ant ferns is that ants store their larva in them, so it serves a very similar function to your hybrid nest sections.
