I just realised I completely forgot to cover Barragan in the Espada section of the video, poor guy. I have a video concerning Barragan in my future plans so maybe I'll talk about that there, the way his powers inform his character is very simple though so it's not a huge deal. Also quick correction on 4:52 - Vasto Lorde do NOT regress, the need to constantly consume or else they'll regress is something exclusive to the Adjuchas. I'm not sure what databook this was confirmed in but even without that confirmation, this makes a lot of sense given Ulquiorra had no mouth to eat with & didn't regress, and the same can be said for Harribel. Sorry for the mistake there!

With Szayelaporro, His animal motif is a "helminth" a parasitic worm with little segmented barbs on it's lower half like Szayel's dress. His ability load-out is based on parasitism: Controlling organs, using hosts for birth, and replicating the mechanisms of a being to not get attacked by their antibodies (the last one is a stretch with the double creation).

Also i think Zommari is a Sea Anemone. "Sea anemones are a group of predatory marine invertebrates constituting the order Actiniaria. Because of their colorful appearance, they are named after the Anemone, a terrestrial flowering plant." Which greatly describes Zommari. "Sea anemones breed by liberating sperm and eggs through the mouth into the sea. The resulting fertilized eggs develop into planula larvae which, after being planktonic for a while, settle on the seabed and develop directly into juvenile polyps. Sea anemones also breed asexually, by breaking in half or into smaller pieces which regenerate into polyps. Sea anemones are sometimes kept in reef aquariums; the global trade in marine ornamentals for this purpose is expanding and threatens sea anemone populations in some localities, as the trade depends on collection from the wild." Something i think also describes some of his abilities like his "clones" he makes through high speeds. They also have a neurotoxin which paralyzes their prey. "controlling" them.

Isn't the reason why Halibel's hole is at the womb most likely because she died giving birth to her child? It makes the most sense to me, ultimately a *sacrifice* like her aspect of death. Not to mention she tends to be rather motherly toward her own fracione and before/after Aizen she's more or less the queen trying to protect everyone, similar to a mother and her children. Maybe I'm simply reading too much into it but it just makes sense to me.

@@yazid6024 It's not about where a fatal strike was located, but what you felt most emotionally attached to. The idea here would be that Halibel was about to become a mother and deeply loved her child, and so that was where her metaphorical heart was when she died. It might even go deeper than that, and show that what she wanted most in the world was to have a child and be a mother. It's possible that only a feeling THAT strong would be enough to relocate the Chain of Fate and thus the eventual Hollow Hole. We don't know the full story there just yet, so it's a bit of guesswork, but it makes good sense with what we know so far.

If the animal theming continues to Barragan, you could say he represents the human animal. Awareness of and fear of one's own mortality is a distinctly human characteristic, as is arrogance in your presumed superiority. Even his powers are contradictory to the animalistic nature of Hollows, as aging others to mere dust renders them inedible. His notion of kingship is pretty un-Hollow-like as well, as he's not a pack leader such as Grimmjow but rather an approximation of a human despot. A bored tyrant who uses his subjects to assuage his ego and as toys to fend off the endless tedium of Hueco Mundo after having reached the apex.

Remember also the theme of Resurrección bringing back the elements associated with their animal nature. Grimmjow gets cat-like limbs and a a tail, Ulquiorra his iconic wings, and Barragan turns into a human skeleton.

Something I've noticed whenever Ichigo's really really mad, he defaults to Hollow techniques, like when he pulls up to the ravaged Soul Society he instinctually uses Sonido. Or when it seemed like Chad was going to die Ichigo uses Pesquisa. I like those little touches Kubo makes showing how Ichigo's hollow side becomes increasingly prominent when he's mad.

It's so interesting to think about how hollows become the basis of the power system of shinigami also quincy to some extent. Like we know the origin of Yhwach is very similar to Hollow evolution. If Oestu conceptualized zapakato system by observing hollows then i think it's very similar to how in modern day engineers take inspiration from "natural" phenomena while designing something.

It's ironic that for being powerful Hollows and lethal warriors, Starrk and Harribel did not relish in their status nor want bloodshed. Starrk only wanted friends and an end to his loneliness while Harribel just wanted her only companions to be safe. They are human in many ways, Harribel has found peace after the many wars and Starrk is remembered both in and out of the Bleach verse.

I was watching some of your vids about JJK after catching up with the manga this week, and i'm so glad this new upload about Bleach popped up. It's been so long since i've watched an analysis video format on this series. I started reading Bleach in 2006, when i was in middle school, and the manga started being serialized in my country. I've spent so many hours through the years, reading, watching and enjoying this story, it makes me so happy to see others still loving it, even after all the hate it got. I think Yammy’s animal motifs are the primordial animals to that once ruled the Earth in his first form, and primitive humans in his second form, representing how humans have become the dominant species, while Yammy is the highest-ranked Arrancar seen in the manga.

On a fun note even though Getsuga Tensho is apparently a hereditary technique that Ichigo acquired from Isshin. It’s definitely obvious that Ichigo’s black getsuga has a correlation to the black reiatsu that Espadas emits from their released states. Given how the exact nature of Ichigo’s Zanpakuto existed before being reforged by Nimaya. I’d say Ichigo’s Zanpakuto always resembled more of an Arrancar’s than it did a Shinigami’s Think about it, Ichigo literally acquired his own Shinigami powers through Hollowification first. His Zanpakuto is essentially his sealed hollow powers being regulated by his latent Quincy abilities. His Shikai is it’s base state, while it’s Bankai is it’s only real release form. I would go as far and say that Vasto Lorde white in Deicide arc essentially what Tensa Zangetsu is naturally supposed to look like before Juhagetsu got forged into a separated blade.

It's implied that Isshin's bankai is a compression-type bankai when it's stated his body can't handle it if he's injured. Compression types condense the power of a bankai into the small form of the user (Ichigo, Yamamoto, Rukia, Kenpachi, etc.); condensing the power of a bankai causes massive strain, leading to the possibility of damaging the user's body.

Adjucas will never regress to a gilian if a part of them is eated. They couldn't became vasto lorde anymore, but they also don't need to fear of regression anymore. This is what Shawlong tells Grimmjow, to eat a part of them. This will help Grimmjow, but will also help them to not regres to gilians as well. A smart move, after all, they didn't had the potential to became vasto lorde, so it's important to secure their adjucas form in this case. Also, i don't know if a hollow vasto lorde can regress back to adjucas, since he's in the most "stable" form. Szayell also use gran rey cero in the hell movie, but i guess that wasn't canon.

The disaster curses are more of a threat than any of the espada in TYBW. The only feats the espada have are grimmjow assassinating Askin and Yhawch saying his nerfed royal guards can't be the strongest espada. Even Mayuri is more impressive despite being able to scale him to his SOUL SOCIETY self in AP, durability, and pure movement speeds.

It's interesting that arrancars mostly possess animal transformations; almost like by removing their masks they go from preta to almost tiryak where they're ascending to animal. No longer stricken to just hunger and consume but gaining instincts as well as menos which may eventually lead to manushya which I think the arrancar almost achieve. It's interesting as well that Bleach Brave Souls labeled Nel's aspect of death as Lamentation but Kubo states that it's supposed to be Sacrifice like Halibel. However, I wonder what the word is in Japanese that may be better translation. Speaking of the aspects of death, I have a theory that they are representative of that arrancar's particular path and source of power in a sense. I think unlike shinigami that seek clarity and unity in their soul, arrancar pull their power more from their particular instinct or essence of their soul. I feel Ulquiorra achieved Segunda Etapa by embracing nihilism, his core instinct, into his soul. Yammy achieved something similar by losing himself to anger and transforming. I also think Barragan lies about his aspect of death and is actually arrogance rather than senescence. Which an arrogant person would probably do to make them sound more imposing. Also Zommari, if we're going based off Beyond Resurreccion character designs from Bleach Brave Souls, is a closed lotus. In his Beyond Resurreccion which each Espada has fused with the hyogouku at their hollow hole, has Zommari sitting crossed legged with multiple arms on an open lotus flower and 4 arms to give himself more of a classic Japanese deity. I feel the lotus also ties together his theme of love and the intoxication people are supposed to feel for his commands (though Pepe demonstrates this a bit better imo).

Overall very good, love your stuff. Point of Dissention: The Mask of a Hollow is not the Ego of the Soul shielding the Id as stated at 2:28. Using Orohime's brother Sora as example, we know that an individual's personality, or Ego, still exists after the Hollow transformation. When Sora's mask is destroyed, the wild impulsive behavior he exhibited stops and his true face is revealed. A Hollow's mask is not the Ego shielding the Id, but rather a manifestation of the Id imprisoning the Ego. Hollow behavior is in fact pretty much completely Id based. They act on impulse, pursuing what they want like a mindless beast. They are always hungry. They are never satisfied. And all their wants need to be fulfilled immediately. Hollow Ichigo even brings up the King and the Horse, which is a direct parallel to Niche explaining the the Ego and Id, respectively. Since Ichigo is the King, he's the Ego, making the Hollow the Horse, the Id. Before gaining control, Ichigo's mask was a representation of his Id taking over his Ego. By becoming an Arrancar, the Hollow's mask becomes their Zanpakuto, effectively sheathing their Id, and they gain a human form and face, the Ego regains control. But the control is tedious, they are still fundamentally Hollows, represented by the Holes and Mask fragments.

For a long time I didn't know why Nnoitora represented despair, but I finally get it. He represents the despair of existence for hollows. A hollows entire existence is to mindlessly devour souls in a desperate attempt to fill the void in themselves and their only escape is death, either by being slain by a shinigami, or devoured by a stronger hollow. This is also seen in Adjuchas class, they have to constantly devour other hollows to prevent regressing back to a Gillian and losing their sense of self forever. Nnoitora wants to die in battle because thats the only escape hollows have, but like many humans he contradicts himself by being so difficult to kill. This is why he gets so pissed when Nel refuses to kill him when she's clearly stronger than him, in his mind, she's rejecting the very core of what it means to be a hollow: kill or be killed. Kenpachi refuses to kill someone who he sees as no long able to adequately fight which also rejects what it means to be a hollow. Nnoitora lashes out and Kenpachi grants him his death wish.

I never noticed a lot of the symbolic/thematic traits between the Espada and their opponents. Kubo a lowkey fuckin genius, like Urahara. They dont flaunt their genius like Mayuri or Grantz. Also, ive been thinking a lot about how Asauchi work like Menos. The Asauchi is basically a Gillian composed of Shinigami instead of Hollows. They all look the same and seem t act off instinct The Zanpakuto spirit acts like the dominant personality, giving the generic Asauchi a unique appearance like an Adjuchas. Total speculation here, but i think long before Asauchi, i think Shinigami manifested their Zanpakuto like Kido. For example, Hitsugaya would use just produce ice from his Reiryoku instead of it coming out of a sword. We already saw that he leaked cold before becoming a Shinigami and without an Asauchi. I think the Asauchi were created because a konpaku communicating with their Zanpakuto was both difficult and rare, possibly more rare than bankai is among the current Shinigami army. To this day, Hitsugaya is the only person we have seen to have any communication with his Zan without an Asauchi. I think Asauchi was created to both connect a Shinigami to their Zanpakuto, and to Shinigami-fy Konpaku with higher spiritual pressure. I guess under this theory, those stronger konpaku would rely on Kido for most of their offensive combat prior to Asauchi.

@@R7dman no no, the reason why Ichigo can't cut kenpachi isn't for cover his body with spiritual energy; yachiru says to Ichigo that he can't cut Kenny because it's like his blade has no edge, this due to the unstable spiritual pressure Arose from the fear that Ichigo had of Ken, in fact, in the same battle Ichigo became afraid of Kenpachi and that is when he broke his zanpakuto, and Kenpachi told him "I told you to keep your spiritual pressure sharp." You can check it out in chapters 108 and 109 of the manga; I tell you this because I also thought that they hardened their skin, until I read the manga carefully and realized that I had misinterpreted it, sometimes our memory can fail us.

​@@_yisus two things can be true... why would Ichigo's spiritual pressure need to be sharp in the first place if Kenpachi didn't have a layer of reiryoku coating his body? Kenpachi says "the killing sword you've created by honing your reiryoku to its limits, is weaker than the reiryoku leaking out of me unconsciously." You are not wrong about Ichigo's fear, once he senses Chad is on death's door he focuses & sharpens his spiritual pressure which is why he manages to cut Kenpachi, but two things can be true. It is BOTH because Kenpachi had a layer of reiryoku coating his body and because Ichigo's fear made his attacks unstable.

@@kakuzugoated873 kenpachi himself says the "sharpening spiritual pressure" thing, go check manga chapter 109. The Ichigos reiatsu was weaker than kenpachi one's cause to the fear that kenpachi infuses. Read the manga, it's not so hard to understand.

This is a 2 week old video so i doubt you'll see this but I'm really curious on your perspective of what the Segunda Etapa is. For the longest time I had honestly missed the whole thing about resurreccion being just the hollow form released. From a very simplistic perspective (the one I held), it's just that everyone had gotten shikai and Ulquiorra was the only one prodigious enough to unlock bankai so quickly, but that seems inelegant now that I have a fuller view. Maybe it, too, is a reflection on what the natural form of a bankai exactly is? Or maybe it's something else entirely. Dunno.

Just so you know, when a spanish word has double r's (aRRancar, hieRRO) it isn't pronounced with that soft r sound you use for "Arrancar" or "Samsara". So the regular english sound for "R" could be better.

I think kubo confirmed that all the arrancar, except the 9th espada, are all vasto lorde. At least grimmjow became one before becoming an arrancar.

Grimmjow never became one the reason is because vasto lorde simply have always been vasto lorde they didn’t evolve to be although that’s unconfirmed but shawlong did mention this as a possibility fo why they haven’t evolved as for the other espada all we know is that espada 7-5 are adjuchas 9 is Gillian the only one to be and harribel espada 3 and barragan espada 2 are vasto lorde starrk and ulquiorra are the only ones to become arrancar naturally espada 8 is different it’s not confirmed if it true but but it’s likely he was vasto lorde because he’s is one half of the original espada 0 cien granz otherwise he’s an adjuchas like yammy was
