The lawsuit has no merit at all. Company communications are company properties. If you use your personal device for work (it's optional) you give your employer the right to manage your device, every big software company does this. That's also why you haven't heard about Apple being sued, because only news sites like the Verge are willing to write about something like this.

When my former employer said that I have to install their software on my personal phone I told them to take a hike. Software required permissions for everything up to an including wiping my personal phone at their discretion. The icing on top was being told that not installing the software on your personal device was a disciplinary offence. I never did.

I would like to say that this is specifically an iPhone issue. iphones dont support having multiple account on them so if you install company portal on your phone (whether you work for apple or not) your IT has access to your entire device. This is ubiquitous across all businesses and management software. On the flip, androids will isolate the work profile and you basically have 2 separate app sections for work and your personal with no access from one to the other unless you grant it in the moment.

Android Enterprise replaced the legacy method and is the same as Apples MDM now. It's no longer isolated to just a few apps and need a fairly recent device. Most companies prefer Samsung or Pixel devices which come with their own issues.

@ work moved people with personal intune-joined devices move to android enterprise with Google Play store and developer settings blocked at the device level so you could only install apps with permission. My corporate iPhone is much less locked down, and I don't have personal stuff on it.

Frankly Device Management Software on phones used for company purposes is standard. It's not a secret but often mandatory by law to avoid data leakage (at least in EU). The only scandal is to push people to use their own device. And even then you can just get a secondary phone for work purposes - you just know your company treats you terribly.

I have no problem on phone management software as long as the company provides the phone. Private phones should be off-limits by law. Ironically it might be the source of leakage in some cases. When you put in a backdoor intentionally on anything, don't be too surprised when someone else uses it.
