Are Bosch ebikes noisy when descending/coasting?

There has been talk about rattle from the new Bosch motor. It happens when coasting or descending on uneven surfaces. How bad is it really? Here's a comparison of bikes running different motors.

I have the same rattle on my Bosch CX motor. It is caused I think due to slack in the motor. The chain movement on downhill freerides allows the front chain gear to move/shift, due to the motor slack, causing the rattle. I wish Bosch would offer a fix for this. Keeping the chain very well lubed helps a little, but the rattle will always be there, from my experience.

This is the same issue I'm experiencing, the motor noise is by far the most annoying one when descending on my Canyon Strive:ON... Really wish there were a fix for this, it sounds like loose rock rattling inside of my frame.

Hey man! Want to thank you once again for all the videos that helped me decide on my Emtb. I got myself an E7000 hardtail in july 2019, and since I saw how fun I could have, a few months later an E8000 full-sus (dual wielding E8010 batteries FTW). Was basically choosing between Bosch-equipped bikes and Shimano-equipped bikes, and Shimano motors won five to one in my opinion. Shimano had: + Better display. + The app to adjust motor behaviour with phone. + Durability. More teeth on front cog that would wear slower. Also heard a few Bosch weren't waterproof (big oof). + Easier to find replacement parts ten years from now from the BIG brand. Heard people had problem finding Bosch parts. + Better sound. E7000 has the highest pitch, but is almost dead silent in gears 8-9-10. E8000 lower pitch and more noisy but not the lowest frequency whirr/buzz/grinding sound of the Bosch. Higher frequency sounds better imo. Bosch had: + 10-20 more Nm. More torque from standstill in steep slopes. Although you did say in a video it was harder to engage the Bosch in steep standstill so... Don't know if Bosch has adressed any of my issues since then. Will update myself eventually. Anyway I have no use for the higher Nm of the Bosch. 60 Nm is plenty for my weight of 65 Kg, going up steep hills. I've been riding the E7000 as my sporty commuter through Swedish winter (about 1000 Km, probably 50% asphalt). Schwalbe Ice Spiker Pro tires held up, no flats, no lost studs, although I did baby the studs with no hard braking, and both look like they are about 33% worn out. Oddly enough the rear tire looks like it has slightly longer studs left, while the rubber looks more abused. Battery held up through cold and I'm on my 37th charging cycle now. Forgot to mention the battery range! Through winter I could do 40-50 Km per charge on the E8010 battery, always in Trail (High) Mode. Always charging after 40 Km now, since I've been BETRAYED by the battery five times above 40 Km, when the remaining charge goes from 2/5 or 1/5 to 0/5 when parked outside for 20 min. Seems like the charge indicator is inaccurate on low levels. Cold probably contributes, but it has happened once above freezing temps as well. Brand new in summer temps I could get 70 Km per charge. If I can get 60 Km Trail Mode when summer hits, I'll be happy. Lower range in winter is likely not because of cold, but because of tires, snow, and all the gravel spread on the roads and sidewalks during winter. Feels good man. Installing Cushcores now. Only wish they did 32 Km/h instead of 25 T_T Oh and Di2 and any other electronic shifter+derailleur is a waste of money. Huge cost for replacement parts for no better experience. E-shifters is just "same done differently". Oh and I use two steel locks and two motion alarms (Abus Bordo 6000A + a cheap but great chinese bike alarm by KKmoon or Mengshen ordered from Amazon) on my E-mtb to keep it safe outside. Thieves would be forced to use an axle grinder and then it would SCREAM when they try to carry it away. So far so good. Obviously stored inside at night.

'That happens when companies that make washing machines manufacture an engine for an ebike, unacceptable in bosch and even more so in shimano, there should be a global demand for this serious error. Just got a cube 2023/24 action team 160 with the bosch smart system and gen 4 motor its nice n quiet not getting any of the loose inside gear clunking like your hearing here maybe they have baffled it somehow I'm curious to see inside but pretty solid all I'm hearing is that whine abit when pedling it's nice though not embarrassing like some say and switching their ebikes off when passing people both on the levo and shimano and bosch motors that's just crazy every bikes going to have some knocking like You said! It's a massive difference to what we used to have to ride so be more appreciated for what we have today! Just think if we still had kona stinkys and old Giant atxs etc see people moan then eh lol

Really dislike mechanichal noise. So i bought turbo levo. Stealth as f#% and really good performer all round:)

This is the main reason I'm leaning towards the levo. I've read the reviews about motor reliability but the rattle of some of these bikes would drive me crazy. Do you still like your levo? Any issues? What size did you get? I'm 5"11 and I can't decide on medium or large
@krusch75

@@barnoldo2877 Loving it. Zero issues other than broken deraillur and rear wheel. Caused by more use than any other previous bike ive had. But you should buy comp version or higher. I bought cheapest option. Smaller battery (not an issue for me, but some prefer more range) and lower spec components make it worth the extra cash.

@@krusch75 Dude, thank you for the response. I was between the Trek rail and the Levo. But I'm def searching market place for a 2020 or newer high end levo turbo.

@@barnoldo2877 Rail was also in my consideration when buying my levo. Great bike as well. But you will have som rattle, unlike brose equipped bikes. They are silent when coasting in rough terrain:)

Hi, I have a Trek Rail 5 2020 with 4th gen cx performance line from bosch and it does have quite pronounce sound from the motor. It is a rattle noise. Apparently this is normal in this motor.

Same with my Rail, but I have to agree with the point of this video. Off road riding is inherently noisy - brakes, tyres, rocks rumbling out of the way. Some of my old simpler suspension bikes made a lot of skipping, thudding sounds on the descents. The little clatter from the Bosch doesn't cause me any bother, not whilst I am enjoying the excellent power delivery! This bike is awesome.

The rattle of the new Bosch is definitely there, but as you say louder on certain bikes than others, and on some bikes similar to the Shimano. So no real reason to avoid the Bosch when purchasing. I'm more curious as to what exactly in the motor is causing the rattle, is it a design flaw or what?

I listen to techno anyway to cover the motor. I would prefer an e bike at least under 18kg as a next evolution, before a silent motor.
