Are China and the US doomed to conflict? | Kevin Rudd

The former prime minister of Australia, Kevin Rudd is also a longtime student of China, with a unique vantage point to watch its power rise in the past few decades. He asks whether the growing ambition of China will inevitably lead to conflict with other major powers - and suggests another narrative.

As an Australian who has lived in China for 15 years, I have to say the Chinese people are generally lovely as are a lot of Americans I've met here in Asia and in the United States. Living here I see there are not huge differences between the West and the East, the problem is not the people or the cultures, it's the power and money hungry politicians that have problems with each other and can lead us to war.

gusaholic brother it's not that an economy dominates alongside it it's culture ,values and it's philosophy also spreads over world! e.g. you may see world following U.S. trends , lifestyle, language and way of thinking (words like liberal, secular) so problem is that when china will start dominating it will do the same but problem is that it's not good in terms of freedom of speech , Human rights , open market etc. concepts When she(china) is leader fear is that these wrong concepts will affect other countries also

Then why isn’t the power-hungry and corrupt politicians of Australia trying to conquer New Zealand? Or why aren’t the power hungry and corrupt politicians of Iceland planning on invading England anytime time soon? Governments reflect the will of the people, governments don’t start wars, people do. Too many people believe Govts are some seperate entity that is always trying to cause harm (conspiracy theorist, they’re bloody everywhere). WW1: the Habsburg Nobility forbade the Austrian Govt from declaring war, but the people elected power hungry war mongers because they wanted war, so the Govt declared war. Austrians were ecstatic at the outbreak of war on Serbia, there were parades through the streets. There is an interesting series of letters between the heads of state during WW1 as the emperors realised they couldn’t stop their countries from going to war. I’ve met plenty of lovely Americans and Chinese, naturally, but they are also way more likely to support military action to protect their way of life (especially Americans, they crazy) as opposed to NZers, or Aussies, we‘re pretty chill, we don’t believe we would ever need military action to defend ourselves, so we don’t elect politicians that bring us into conflict with other nations. Politicians definitely reflect the characters a nation

I met Kevin Rudd walking along a beach in Australia in 2010. I didnt know who he was until a few seconds before he said hello to me so no nerves had set in or anything, so we were just chatting away and he was very interested about my studies 😂 really nice guy. It took a few mins to realise what I got myself in the middle of as I noticed his security detail spaced out a hundred or so yards around him on the beach and then when we walked past a bar and everyone there instantly noticed him and started cheering manically 😂😂😂

Random Aussie Emu Gillard’s rise was part a *coup for the labor party to regain popularity after the greens/labor hung parliament which caused a huge rift in traditionally labour seats (they lost public trust because of certain “greenie” policies) and after Turnbull and Abbott both got into what they do best which is smear campaign. Rudd recently spoke about Turnbull taking him to the parliamentary fraud and integrity commission with falsified emails and stories to drag Rudd’s name. Not saying he’s the answer to our problems or anything, I’m just getting at that unfortunately, nothing in the political sphere is as black and white as getting voted out of leadership. The Canberra popularity contest is about as politically cut-throat as taxation law.

It is quite humbling to know that Kevin is accepting of his responsibility and power to be a binding agent as an Australian who grew up witnessing the US rise and being surrounded by the Chinese rise as well. He fully is aware that no matter the threat of nuclear war, he understands that at the end of the day these two countries are going to be the ones standing up first and standing up last. Despite Australia being the most versatile, he knows that Australia won't last if these two collide. It's a shame Australia didn't have the same vision yet when he was elected, but of all the prime ministers in the last 2 decades, I'm glad it was him that apologised. He was was empathetic and visionary. His apology on behalf of Australia wasn't a political act, it was an understanding of another culture that suffered in the hands of greed and fear.

Every single character for that translation was carefully selected, you don't use random character with similar pronunciation. And as someone mentioned above, USA is translated as 美利坚合众国 The full name means that a country which is beautiful, powerful and strong. It does not come with coincidence . There used to be like a hundred translations for the US before 1900s, but after a lot of students were sent to the US and with a desire to overthrow the Qing dynasty growing stronger and stronger, a lot of books were published then introducing The American Revolutionary War saying that the Chinese need to learn from the us who defeated their master . Slogans like “要学那,美利坚,离英独立(learn from America who gained independence from UK)” were everywhere that's when the translation of the US was settled down. BTW in Chinese Portugal is translated as 葡萄牙(pu tao ya) which literally means grape tooth

Al Senior Meanwhile the Chinese People’s Liberation Army- Navy (PLA-N) is building 5 new aircraft supercarriers and large scale amphibious assault ships in the classes presently only available to the global power projection capability of the United States Marine Corps, while the PLA-Air Force is intent on acquiring up to 1,000 Y-20 strategic airlift aircraft capable of air dropping over 40,000 paratroopers up to 5,000km from mainland China within 24 hours. Let your heart not be at rest but readied for war. The similarities between the present day Peoples Republic and post Treaty of Versailles Germany are striking. They even have a religious minority to scapegoat and have imprisoned over 1 million in forced re-education camps, but this time they aren’t Jews, they’re Muslims. Meanwhile China intimidates all its near neighbours, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The Chinese state is the apparatus of a mild mannered psychopathy. When the United States dissolves in the next three decades and China is no longer inhibited by the presence of US military power, you will see Chinas true colours laid bare. Remember China invaded Vietnam in 1979 and fought a 2 year war against Vietnam. Remember Tiananmen Square.

Look at what's happening now, the state being the single largest monopoly of land ownership, of which any individual is only "renting" the land for about 80 years in return for money to the state coffer! Plus, as much as you might hate Chiang Kai Shek and he's a douchebag, HE was the one that defeated the regional warlords, the Communists back then were a bunch of guerrillas. I’m a Chinese studying in Canada, My families are still in China, three other different provinces except Wuhan(Hubei Province). I’ll share what I know. Shortly after Wuhan lockdown, the rest of the China also lockdown. For around two weeks, mass public transportation shuts down and only essential stores remain open. However, the difference between China’s situation is that nearly all people wear masks, as well as protective goggles whenever they left the house. So the outcome after the lockdown is actually pretty positive. Even when some people back to work now, they still wear masks all the time. Also, the lockdown of other provinces came at the very early stage of the spread of the coronavirus, so the strict quarantine worked decently well. After two months, the situation has been much better now. I’m not too concerned about anywhere in China right now, simply because all the people I know in China wears mask all the time when they are outside, so it’s harder for the coronavirus to keep its n0 close to 1. What I’m really concerned now is where I live, in Vancouver. From my observation, literally nobody wear masks and take it seriously before last week. This week, the beaches are packed with people close to each other and not wearing masks. I attended a conference meeting on March 13, with 20 people stuck in a small room, 5 of them are coughing like crazy. People do not want to like to see their normal life interrupted and don’t take sick leave. It’s mind buggingly to me. It's been 11 days since I last left the apartment. I went to stock food today in a mall, and the Supermarket is full of people, close to 2 out of 10 people wears a mask, while it's a wonderland for Coronavirus to spread because many people stay close together as fewer shops remain open right now. What I guess is that, the government outside China advocate people should not wear a mask because there is not enough mask for everybody, but it's not the best option because we are fighting an invisible enemy and many pretend it doesn't exist because they couldn't see it. Getting tested in China is relatively easy, because the government cover all the medical cost so people do not have the mental burden to get tested. Here in BC, Canada, I attempted to help my friend who has fever get tested and it's almost impossible, there are so many restrictions here to get tested. At least as of (March 28). I'm deeply worried about whether we can actually get coronavirus controlled before it overwhelmed the medical system in the rest of the world. For China, literally all other provinces are helping Wuhan, the epicenter. In the meantime, each community was helping each other to buy food, supply, and have a quarantine life. My parents 's community uses a QR code when you check in and check out the neighborhood. And family who tested positive for COVID 19 posted a small sticker on the door. So community worker and volunteers can leave supply at door front. That's the cost of how we get it under control in China right now. I'm not clear about situation in Europe, but in north America, even I can tell the government acted too late and too little. Now the coronavirus has already wide spread for quite a while, it's much harder to get it under control. And unfortunately much more will die because there are simply too many people already infected and the resources are limited. I hope more people take it seriously and protect people who are vulnerable COVID 19 in our society. We are in this together. Had living in China for 18 years, and living in Canada for the past 7 years, I recognized that many people hold very different opinions about different political system. I'm not eager to debate what works better, nor did I really care about the answer. But it's a common interest to all of us, as human kind to stay safe. Keep the people we love live through a tough time like this. It's not too late, if enough of us stay at home for a while longer, only buy essentials when necessary, we can beat this coronavirus. Every one of us, are gonna to make it work. Take care!

They wanted to protest and oppose things they didn’t like. But have they ever thought that this is a barrier to traffic, hindering stock trading, and hindering others' freedom to fulfill their freedom? This is not freedom. This is called using the reputation of freedom to break the law,Impair the freedom of others.Believe me, a country without freedom is not likely to become the world's second strongest country.

11:27 Fact-check: the world did not look away when Japan invaded China. The countries of the League of Nations unanimously condemned Japan as the aggressor. Italy sent tanks and fighter-planes to the Chinese under Chang Kai-Shek; Britain sent tonnes of ammunition and other supplies along the Burma Road; the USA even sent pilots who flew missions against the Japanese. When the USA warned Japan that they would stop selling them oil and scrap metal unless Japan withdrew from China, the Japanese attacked America at Pearl Harbour.

Yeah selling oil that fuelled the war machines while Japan was invading china. Even after the war not allow notorious war criminals(all sorts of war crimes such mass murder of civilians and test chemical weapons on cilivian) to be punished. Even allowing to Cut a whole chunk of land off China eg outer Mongolia (Russia's doing btw ) and Okinawa(well not part of China but under china protection before it got invaded). Also the fact is WW2 only lasted 4-5 years China's war with Japan is 14 years. Japan invaded China in the early 1931. And ended in the 1945so during the 8 years before Japan sided with German businesses as usual. US only came late in the wars as volunteers (before pearl harbour) . And as Victor of WW2 China was left on its own island. Every other country was compensated but china. FFS Japan didn't even give a formal apology to China for WW2 until present day. PS fun fact China even sent a 140k men in WW1 in the British side. So yeah China got played pretty bad hence the 100 year of humiliation (start from the Brits started a war to sell opium).

Yes, Japan invaded China in 1931, and took over Manchuria. The League of Nations condemned Japans aggression, but no more than that. What you refer to as “not looking away” was when the western powers actively provided aid and supplies to China in world war 2. Absolutely you are correct on the oil ban on Japan from the USA. But the fact was that not much action was taken by the west to prevent Japan from further expanding into China past 1931.

Trying to micro manage everything and a slave driver towards his staff. But, he did have vision, and I believe he is an essentially decent person, with an ability to understand and have compassion towards others. That makes him stand out compared to the slew of prime ministers we've had since 2013; from Tony Abbott, who is a genuine psychopath, to Malcolm Turnbull, who was disengaged, was easily manipulated by the career politicians around him, and ended up selling out everything he claimed to stand for, to the current clown who's projected public persona is nothing like his actual one, and who seems only interested in trying to stoke the culture wars and divide the electorate.

But the Chinese have the ability to do both, so Westerners will never apologize for once colonizing China and oppressing the Chinese.but still appreciate your courage, mr rudd
