As an Australian who has lived in China for 15 years, I have to say the Chinese people are generally lovely as are a lot of Americans I've met here in Asia and in the United States. Living here I see there are not huge differences between the West and the East, the problem is not the people or the cultures, it's the power and money hungry politicians that have problems with each other and can lead us to war.

gusaholic brother it's not that an economy dominates alongside it it's culture ,values and it's philosophy also spreads over world! e.g. you may see world following U.S. trends , lifestyle, language and way of thinking (words like liberal, secular) so problem is that when china will start dominating it will do the same but problem is that it's not good in terms of freedom of speech , Human rights , open market etc. concepts When she(china) is leader fear is that these wrong concepts will affect other countries also

Then why isn’t the power-hungry and corrupt politicians of Australia trying to conquer New Zealand? Or why aren’t the power hungry and corrupt politicians of Iceland planning on invading England anytime time soon? Governments reflect the will of the people, governments don’t start wars, people do. Too many people believe Govts are some seperate entity that is always trying to cause harm (conspiracy theorist, they’re bloody everywhere). WW1: the Habsburg Nobility forbade the Austrian Govt from declaring war, but the people elected power hungry war mongers because they wanted war, so the Govt declared war. Austrians were ecstatic at the outbreak of war on Serbia, there were parades through the streets. There is an interesting series of letters between the heads of state during WW1 as the emperors realised they couldn’t stop their countries from going to war. I’ve met plenty of lovely Americans and Chinese, naturally, but they are also way more likely to support military action to protect their way of life (especially Americans, they crazy) as opposed to NZers, or Aussies, we‘re pretty chill, we don’t believe we would ever need military action to defend ourselves, so we don’t elect politicians that bring us into conflict with other nations. Politicians definitely reflect the characters a nation

People are so idiotically manipulated by media..they turned the dirty mining union factions on him..backed by Rheinhart and co..because he dared propose taxing them..Australians lost trillions that could have funded all new services and we’d be a different nation today..and..then ‘’did backroom deals’ ..Trades Hall today is even more corrupt than big business. That’s not what our own beautiful’8 hour days groundbreaking trade unionism was founded on..or Gough’s vision.. and ‘true believers’ were cheated by those nasty little ganging, passive aggressive charlatans with all their patriarchal factions, sexual secrets and nepotism among them.. and corrupted values? Eg. Shorten, the ‘great Catholic’ with the secret mistress. Come out about yourselves if you’re going to stand up and laid it over others. Yuck. Double standards everywhere. Random Aussie Emu Gillard’s rise was part a *coup for the labor party to regain popularity after the greens/labor hung parliament which caused a huge rift in traditionally labour seats (they lost public trust because of certain “greenie” policies) and after Turnbull and Abbott both got into what they do best which is smear campaign. Rudd recently spoke about Turnbull taking him to the parliamentary fraud and integrity commission with falsified emails and stories to drag Rudd’s name. Not saying he’s the answer to our problems or anything, I’m just getting at that unfortunately, nothing in the political sphere is as black and white as getting voted out of leadership. The Canberra popularity contest is about as politically cut-throat as taxation law.

It is quite humbling to know that Kevin is accepting of his responsibility and power to be a binding agent as an Australian who grew up witnessing the US rise and being surrounded by the Chinese rise as well. He fully is aware that no matter the threat of nuclear war, he understands that at the end of the day these two countries are going to be the ones standing up first and standing up last. Despite Australia being the most versatile, he knows that Australia won't last if these two collide. It's a shame Australia didn't have the same vision yet when he was elected, but of all the prime ministers in the last 2 decades, I'm glad it was him that apologised. He was was empathetic and visionary. His apology on behalf of Australia wasn't a political act, it was an understanding of another culture that suffered in the hands of greed and fear.

旧金山 (the "Old Gold Mountain") is Chinese for San Francisco (I suppose it came from the gold rush). 美国 is Chinese for the U.S.. I wish there were more people in the U.S. who understand the history and culture of China and there were more people in China who understand the history and culture of the U.S. Unfortunately, there are far more people in both countries who don't understand the other side. Furthermore, they don't make the effort to get to know the other side. The hot-heads from both countries tend to dominate the social media and the media of two countries aren't exactly helping.

Every single character for that translation was carefully selected, you don't use random character with similar pronunciation. And as someone mentioned above, USA is translated as 美利坚合众国 The full name means that a country which is beautiful, powerful and strong. It does not come with coincidence . There used to be like a hundred translations for the US before 1900s, but after a lot of students were sent to the US and with a desire to overthrow the Qing dynasty growing stronger and stronger, a lot of books were published then introducing The American Revolutionary War saying that the Chinese need to learn from the us who defeated their master . Slogans like “要学那,美利坚,离英独立(learn from America who gained independence from UK)” were everywhere that's when the translation of the US was settled down. BTW in Chinese Portugal is translated as 葡萄牙(pu tao ya) which literally means grape tooth

Let your heart not be at rest but readied for war. The similarities between the present day Peoples Republic and post Treaty of Versailles Germany are striking. They even have a religious minority to scapegoat and have imprisoned over 1 million in forced re-education camps, but this time they aren’t Jews, they’re Muslims. Meanwhile China intimidates all its near neighbours, Vietnam, the Philippines, South Korea, Japan and Taiwan. The Chinese state is the apparatus of a mild mannered psychopathy. When the United States dissolves in the next three decades and China is no longer inhibited by the presence of US military power, you will see Chinas true colours laid bare. Remember China invaded Vietnam in 1979 and fought a 2 year war against Vietnam. Remember Tiananmen Square.

They wanted to protest and oppose things they didn’t like. But have they ever thought that this is a barrier to traffic, hindering stock trading, and hindering others' freedom to fulfill their freedom? This is not freedom. This is called using the reputation of freedom to break the law,Impair the freedom of others.Believe me, a country without freedom is not likely to become the world's second strongest country.

Kevin Rudd my man. as a Chinese studying in Australia and learning about western culture. There are hard times when people discriminate against you but can't blame them, in some areas China is lacking behind, there are also some prejudice people in China, no country is perfect. There are people out there trying to destroy the peace between these two great countries and people are trying to protect it. This video really encourages people to maintain a healthy world view and carry on to improve the world rather than to destroy it. Because we are in this together, if China and the US actually go to war no one will be safe. Not even Australia, these two nations have enough atomic bombs to destroy earth 1000 times and more. Every nation is in this, these two countries can't solve it themselves we should help them. Sort are our differences and learn from each other. I like the US there are many lovely people there, I would hate if Elon musk dies before he can land things on Mars. Anyways, my every old motherland, 5000 years of history, faced great danger in the last 200 years very close to dying, and the people on that land have built on top of the ashes and finally stood up. Nothing but love for those who sacrificed themselves to save this old civilization(no matter what nationality). Thank you.

It was easy for the US to deal with the former Soviet Union, it was just a military superpower. It's easier to deal with the Japanese, they're just an economic challenge. However, dealing with China is a bit difficult. It is a military power plus an economic challenge plus a technological rival plus a diplomatic rival. Thing is, bullies often don’t realize that they’re bullying people…

I appreciate that he mentioned how China really feels about the past 2 centuries. It's really important but often overlooked by the west. You can't believe how much of our textbooks is dedicated to telling the youth how did China suffer before and during in the World Wars, and teach them "let's not let those things happen ever again". Chinese people are very ashamed of their history of being the loser and being colonised. It could be just the government teaching one generation after another to think in the same way, I don't know. But even if that is the case there's no real difference now since it worked so well, that feeling of shame is very genuine and it can become the driving force of so many things.

He was good at communicating with the public, had a good understanding of the issues, and enjoyed digging in to policy work, which are very important skills for a PM, but the way he worked with his colleagues was by all accounts pretty dysfunctional. Trying to micro manage everything and a slave driver towards his staff. But, he did have vision, and I believe he is an essentially decent person, with an ability to understand and have compassion towards others. That makes him stand out compared to the slew of prime ministers we've had since 2013; from Tony Abbott, who is a genuine psychopath, to Malcolm Turnbull, who was disengaged, was easily manipulated by the career politicians around him, and ended up selling out everything he claimed to stand for, to the current clown who's projected public persona is nothing like his actual one, and who seems only interested in trying to stoke the culture wars and divide the electorate.

mike zhang Bollocks, Mao would be rolling over his graves at modern Chinese capitalism and rampant corruption - remember how the early communist revoluntionaries gave land back to individual ownership? Look at what's happening now, the state being the single largest monopoly of land ownership, of which any individual is only "renting" the land for about 80 years in return for money to the state coffer! Plus, as much as you might hate Chiang Kai Shek and he's a douchebag, HE was the one that defeated the regional warlords, the Communists back then were a bunch of guerrillas. China's "prosperity" today is all thanks to capitalism! Mao screwed the country over with failed collectivisation and mass starvation! Shouldn’t they apologize for the crimes of massacres, rape, plunder, sabotage, trafficking in human beings, and occupation of their homeland committed by the people of other parts of the world that they have done for hundreds of years? Even if it was merely verbal, it was not even a trace. Because they don't think it's a crime at all. I'm stronger and weaker. I'm bullying you right now. This is true, as he said, because this was one of the 4/15 times. But it could be argued that power didn't directly shift from the U.K. to US, but rather to Germany first, and then to the US after WW1. However, a major difference is that the U.K. and US had good relations and cooperation during their power switch. The cultural similarities helped foster this. Unfortunately, the west and china have very uncomfortable relations, and this is already flaring up more. There are almost no major cultural ties. There is reason to be concerned.

11:27 Fact-check: the world did not look away when Japan invaded China. The countries of the League of Nations unanimously condemned Japan as the aggressor. Italy sent tanks and fighter-planes to the Chinese under Chang Kai-Shek; Britain sent tonnes of ammunition and other supplies along the Burma Road; the USA even sent pilots who flew missions against the Japanese. When the USA warned Japan that they would stop selling them oil and scrap metal unless Japan withdrew from China, the Japanese attacked America at Pearl Harbour.
@bruceli5726

Yeah selling oil that fuelled the war machines while Japan was invading china. Even after the war not allow notorious war criminals(all sorts of war crimes such mass murder of civilians and test chemical weapons on cilivian) to be punished. Even allowing to Cut a whole chunk of land off China eg outer Mongolia (Russia's doing btw ) and Okinawa(well not part of China but under china protection before it got invaded). Also the fact is WW2 only lasted 4-5 years China's war with Japan is 14 years. Japan invaded China in the early 1931. And ended in the 1945so during the 8 years before Japan sided with German businesses as usual. US only came late in the wars as volunteers (before pearl harbour) . And as Victor of WW2 China was left on its own island. Every other country was compensated but china. FFS Japan didn't even give a formal apology to China for WW2 until present day. PS fun fact China even sent a 140k men in WW1 in the British side. So yeah China got played pretty bad hence the 100 year of humiliation (start from the Brits started a war to sell opium).

Yes, Japan invaded China in 1931, and took over Manchuria. The League of Nations condemned Japans aggression, but no more than that. What you refer to as “not looking away” was when the western powers actively provided aid and supplies to China in world war 2. Absolutely you are correct on the oil ban on Japan from the USA. But the fact was that not much action was taken by the west to prevent Japan from further expanding into China past 1931.

Really? how so? care to elaborate on that claim? So far he was the only Intelligent political leader Australia has seen in the past couple of decades and look where we are at. He wanted to unfuck our country by taxing the big mining corporations that do nothing but siphon off our resources and money out of this nation and make greater steps towards being reliant on renewable energy.

Everytime a video talks about china, there's always a fight in the comment section. Both sides are claiming the other side is brainwashed and someone is always claiming that it's propaganda. Can't poeple form their own opinions?

I guess people on both sides who hate the other team the most are those who are brainwashed because they will believe and defend what is told to them or suggested by their family/school/mainstream media unconditionally and find evidences only if it supports their point. Most people sadly never imagine to think differently than the majority, most people of china are atheists, most Americans are Christians, and funny both sides think the other side people are poor either want to save them(us missionaries, and chinese want to 'unite' with proletariat of the states) or hate them.I really think people should stop accusing others as brainwashed just bc they have a different opinion, from a Chinese christian who became Christian by help of us missionary friends

It won't. War just isn't profitable enough for either for it to happen. Now, competition will, and that's fine. But the cost on the economy with a war would be so devestating it just isn't worth it. Same sort of reason nobody is willing to stop Russia from invading their neighbors, people are very reasonably scared of any possible war.

kevin did mention about the history , which we do feel humiliated in the past in China. but what he didnt mention is in Chinese culture, we would like evrything peaceful and tolerance. Chinese never want to "control" the world, we just want to be treat fairly. just like recently, the Chinese government didn't lie, maybe the virus is origined here, but it is not man-made, how can we made a thing that hurt us first? i am shocked most of the coutries dealing with the virus which is just sooooo lack of efficiency.the US keep blaming us, it would evoke a hatred towards asian people in america.😔

@@cathayachang2896 The Chinese people are very good and nice people. But the Chinese government betrays the good Chinese people and control them and lie to them. Chinese citizens are always being monitored and even if you Jay walk you will be ridiculed by cameras that monitor your face. Also the Government did lie to the people. They delayed the data for the virus and then recently china increases their death toll by 50 percent. That doesn't just happen. No one should trust the CCP . Not even the Citizens of China.
