Grappling dummies seem like a great solo alternative to training your Judo, Jiu-Jitsu, and wrestling if you don’t have a partner to train with.
Use code FIGHTTIPS10 to get 10% off all items at www.centurymartialarts.com
And although they’re tons of fun, they do come with some drawbacks that you should consider before shelling out the money.
That being said, I’m a huge fan of this 120 lbs. grappling dummy from ‪@centurymartialarts‬ - you can get one for yourself at the following link:

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THIS! I just purchased the 140lbs 2 days ago & started to feel like I made a mistake because I found no videos of people working drills with dummies over 90 lb. I can appreciate the challenge to move it around but they do get heavy. Remember theyre --lbs of DEAD WEIGHT so choose wisely!!!

In class you're grappling with people alot more than 90 lbs. Chances of your class mate weighing so little is quite low. What you learn in jujitsu is about being able to control your opponent without strength or power, just pure technique. The dummy only replaces a classmate to practice on everything else is supposed to be same as far as proper technique goes. Any weight lying on floor whether person or dummy can feel like dead weight if you're relying on strength alone.

for grappling I really like the "grappling smarty" dummy. It can do most jiu jitsu positions and even stuff like turtle. I like grappling dummies for getting reps in and getting techinques into the motor memory space. They aren't a replacement for training with a person and a person can develop bad habits with a dummy just like they could with bags/pads but in general they are really useful in the right context.

I loooove these dummies for conditioning. I run my school's conditioning class and I want us to get more of them. Fireman carries, repeated slams/suplexes, and my favorite of all which is full force ground and pound for time. If you haven't yet try doing 1 min on 30 seconds off for 5 rounds of full power G&P and see how that makes you feel.

oh shane a nice little tip for that arm bar at 4:30 is if you take your left foot and point it inwards and underneath the shoulder blade & pinch your knees in it further isolates it and makes the arm bar much tighter and more difficult to escape

As a Judoka (recently promoted to Brown belt) I think grappling dummies can be a mixed bag. I don't think there's anything wrong with them, but I don't think they're 100% necessary to train with. I guess it can be easier to teach the basic movement of a throw or a grappling technique to a beginner, but I think if you pair them up with an experienced uke, it personally think it would be more beneficial. I found that the uke's feedback with some techniques, especially ne waza, can be really helpful. The only thing they seem to be absolutely necessary for is transitioning from standing to groundwork, and I found that a heavy bag works just fine for that (for judo at least). Not the worst thing in the world, but I personally would not spend money on one, but that's just me

I was on the fence on getting one of these. Like you, I came from a decade or more of striking experience with limited grappling. With striking, it is so easy to take the fundamentals home and rep to refine, in bjj, there isn’t an equivalent. A dummy like this is probably with it just to give me those reps.

Hi Shane, how are the legs doing on your dummy after a few more weeks of use? I bought a 140lb filled dummy from a different company and after the first week of good use, the lower legs collapsed forwards and backwards, so it could not stand up properly even with assistance. It looked very similar to the one you have with the stitching and arms. Great video though, I appreciate your reviews of products as I am considering buying the century version if you do not run into problems with it later on.

I would benefit from a grappling dummy because Folkstyle Wrestling was my first Martial Art. (3 years of it) After wrestling I bought a 40-60lb heavy bag because I was getting into Kickboxing. After I did a year of kickboxing I thought about doing MMA and combine wrestling and kickboxing but the problem was you can’t wrestle a hanging Heavy bag. There are no Arms to grab, there are no legs to hook, there’s no head to lock in place and then I had problems with takedowns because you can’t do a double leg without any legs or Hiptoss it because it’s hanging. I tried getting a family member to help me with grappling but the family members that can are too young or too old or to bulky/Tall/small and I don’t wanna hurt them and hurt myself with any cradles or Submissions and taken downs. I can’t scale a family member (meaning Level changing and getting lower than my opponent or holding them in place couldn’t workout) because they’re weight and size is different than mine! Everything is a mess, so If bought a dummy bag i could complete those two tasks of fighting it standing and taking it to the ground. So I felt like getting a dummy bag would mean I could work at my own pace. Memorize my old ground movement and find new ways for takedowns and new ways for submissions/pins/locks/holds. So Imma try to get one for Christmas to finish what I started as a MMA fighter just now getting used to Muay Thai and BJJ because of my wrestling and kickboxing background. Also 9:36 Single Leg! And 9:42 Cradle

I train boxing and hurt my wrists often. What about wrestling or jiu-jitsu? Can I do it?
@AuraKnight8
@AuraKnight8 7 ай бұрын
@@nangmangta yes but in wrestling your stance is southpaw not orthodox In life your going to be using more grappling than striking. Because people usually grab their opponent not hit their opponent because it’s easier to grab than strike your opponent. If you learn wrestling and someone takes you to the ground or hits you onto the ground they gave you an advantage because YOUR USED TO THE GROUND. So to a wrestler or BJJ fighter going to the ground doesn’t mean you lost, it means your at your most comfortable position and getting up is easier because you learned how to get up faster because of wrestling experience. A STRIKER ISN’T GOOD ON THE GROUND!!! Nobody can escape a cradle position because that isn’t something taught unless you know how to escape it from the ground same with submissions. To me MMA is like playing rock paper scissors Grappling is weaker standing and Striking is weaker on ground. Choosing what position you play depends on how well you were taught. You become unstoppable if you know both MMA *To sum it up, yes! you can do both grappling and striking which will help you more down the line*

Nice on Shane. Bjj guys especially are always knocking on these but i don't get it. We always used them for wrestling. Everyone did. And thats mainly what i do now to in my private gym with one similar to yours. Takedowns, suplexs, throws, conditioning and endurance. Etc. But ground stuff and submissions, g&p and all that too and drilling techniques over and over. But ive got a different one for that and think youd qppreciate if you got too. One with the knees up above the hips and open and arms in the L shape , elbows in, with good hands and feet and a hump or whateverto indicate thumb or inkie direction, with an extended chin to get in under and all that. That smarty one i see right under this video is very similiar actually haha. But yiu mught want to go abit lighter in that. Dead weights alot more sometimes than human eesisisting and moving in mount or whatever. Anyway you know what youre doing. Good to see you coming along with the grappling.

However, you can Ippon Seoi Nage, Harai Goshi, and Ura Nage (Suplex) this thing straight through the crust of the earth as much as you want.

Ive had one for years and my answer is: only if you have the proper real estate to match. These things are quite heavy and if you live in a flat you cant just throw that thing around. It would be loud as hell and maybe even ruin the flooring. So unless you have a garage or a gym for your own...you can hardly use it.

You could probably get the gi on the dummy by putting it on upside down in the front, then pulling it over the dummy's head. Or if that doesn't work, you could definitely take on old gi, cut it in two down the back, and sew on a big zipper.

I loved doing basic combos, takedown, and leg locks. However, that mf would be heavy to flip over my shoulder 😂

From my experience, if you got the storage space and will practice with it almost everyday then sure.

Thanks, I am considering getting a heavy one. Our club dummy is really only good for light drill rolling 🥝🇳🇿🥋

The problem with grappling is that from the bottom you can throwing elbows 90 degrees from the bottom in a street fight and get more leverage from that position. Half of grappling is training without striking or training with only certain strikes ... so I don't find much of it that practical

@@fighttips I have. It is based on 2 things. One is that once someone gets decent and is no longer grappling to win but just stall, then it gets tricky. Other aspect is when you add striking, it makes certain positions not practical.
