I've always enjoyed cycling with headphones for motivation. Wouldn't do it in a group. It's perfectly safe. If a driver's going to hit you from behind you can't do much anyway. Pro tip: try a garmin varia radar over Bluetooth headphones - audible alert over the music and it means you hear cars approaching better than you would without the headphones in the first place (audible warning from the garmin units themselves are pretty much lost at speed, ditto approaching cars from behind due to wind noise..)

I use the bone conduction headset on rides and only podcasts because these sets aren't the greatest for music. I do tend to stay on trails and some bike lanes. Not a fan of traffic anyway. I leave the iPods for the turbo trainer with music...those Zwift rides can get boring. Never had issues with the bone induction and use them at work now. Great topic Jon. Will have lots of opinions for sure. One last thing. About 25 years ago, I was pulled over by the Winnipeg police for having headsets on. I was a novice rider a that time so had some educational moments with the cop.

What people think they can do and what they can actually do are two different things. Multitasking is one of those things that most people assume they can do. I’ve conducted a number of studies that say otherwise. Even something as simple as one earbud can greatly reduce reaction time and accuracy. In a bike ride that makes no sense at all to me. Group rides often break down to riders complaining about what other riders are doing. Sometimes that escalates to pulling a phone out of a pocket. Here’s the thing - each rider has control over exactly one rider (unless they’re on a tandem). You want the ride to be better, be a better rider, expect the same from others. I feel safe on rides because I have confidence in my own bike handling skills. I take the riders I coach into a field to play bumper bikes a few times a year - I have confidence in their ability too. There are far too many distractions, try to focus on what you’re doing…

Apple wired in-ear headphones, both ears, Not dangerous, in fact it is actually easier to hear and I find the headphones remove some of the wind noise and I can better hear cars coming behind me, I've done this in Sydney Australia for at least 10 years with massive traffic and in Europe where there is way less cars in remote areas with little traffic. Having headphones in ears but not playing anything, there is absolutely no issue. I play music or listen to youtube playlists and audiobooks. Don't know about other headphone brands or types YMMV.

There’s a clip on Bluetooth speaker by Noxgear that’s absolutely awesome. Tough to hear what you’re listening to while on a busy street. But if you’re on a quieter street, it’s golden for listening and making calls

The "bone conductor" earphones are suppose to allow you to hear everything. If you ride by yourself no one is going to care anyway. Safety concerns are up to you.

@@jonmaloneycycling7593 I use the Aftershokz bone conducting headphones, and they are amazing for riding. Much better than having 1 ear plugged. With both ears open, you can hear that much more, and you don't have to have the volume up either since the sound is transmitted through you, and not into the air. Definitely worth a try. I recommend them to everyone. But I never wear them on group rides, just my solo rides, or when I mountain bike.

I have an Ipod and a JBL charge on my trike.. The reason that Harley's are noticed is because they are loud.. They are not sending that rumble into their ears only... You notice the Harley from a long way away... I think headphones are incredibly dangerous.. Bluetooth speakers are very different because you can hear the noise (approaching cars) while listening.

I mean the point is even if you had earphones that you can use and still hear what’s around you it’s the overall impression from other people. People are already assuming that you cannot hear them passing by or speaking to you and consider it dangerous on the road. It’s the reason why it’s illegal in places like Japan. However, I still wear mine in solo long rides and take them off in group rides or if I’m going to be in heavy traffic.

One ear bud is okay. Two is not. I use bone conductor and they allow me to hear people and things around me. Touching someone’s gear is far from okay and that guy should be banned from the group. Very commendable of your friend to not escalate. I probably would have.

Completely agree with you about everything I think. Part of what got me into cycling was the fact that I liked listening to books, and I figured "why not just ride my bike while listening?" so I would ride for hours while enjoying a book like you said. Agreed about not having them for a group ride. Communication is important 😂

Never ever wear earphones in a group ride, thats just crazy. I personally dont think you should ever wear earphones (both ears) on the open road either. Would never wear headphones in a group ride, why bother doing a group ride and then blanking off other people? Would only wear headphone elsewhere that let sound through, and even then I wouldn't wear anything other than very light traffic. As for pulling a phone out of someones pocket and throwing it away...that is either assault or attempted theft in most countries!

Short awnser, no it isn't safe to ride with headphones. You will not hear the traffic around you. Also making a phone call on a bike is dangerous, just as it is in a car. It is stupid to use it, even on trails. You are not alone and only selfish people that don't care about other, wear it!

@@jonmaloneycycling7593 here we have not much accidents with cyclists, but when people started to use headphones and making phonecalls on their bikes, the number went up. Making a phone call that isn't hands free. They didn't do ggd headphones yet, but it is known that it is dangerous. I have used headphones on my bike, but I soon noticed that it was dangerous. I was lucky to never had an accident, but it was close a few times. And we have bike lanes and tge roads are way safer than in the USA. Still it is even dangerous out here in the Netherlands.

You're conflating two things here. Of course you shouldn't use your phone cycling/ driving etc it is a distraction. There's no evidence that having headphones in however causes accidents or increases risk. Driver's gonna hit you from behind regardless of whether or not you have headphones in. Would you ban the deaf from cycling?
